Tetsujin 28-go (2004) - 8
I feel like I could recommend this show to those who don't even like mecha so far. It's a very different show when compared to many other super robot shows like TTGL or Mazinger.
The only thing that can combat Tetsujin is another robot. With the show being set in the 60s (IIRC), there's practically nothing else that can stop it. Because of this, there's an edge of fear that's to be felt whenever it's around. The people living in this time are beginning to prosper after a war that devastated most of their country, where they spent their time fearing weapons like these.
Now there's another big machine stomping around, what reason is there not have to be afraid?
There's also the character of Kenji Murasame, who wants to destroy the Tetsujin for killing his brother in the first episode while it was out of control, thinking it will benefit Japan as well.
It's his efforts to do so that ends up becoming his own undoing, where in this arc he makes a deal with a gang of thieves to steal Tetsujin and take it out of Japan.
Taking it out of Japan, is what they don't do. They use Tetsujin to steal, destroy, and steal some more, saying that the people of Japan are nothing more than dogs for losing the war, bringing more harm to the country he wanted to protect.
Top it all off when in this episode, he unintentionally ends up causing another robot to go out of control, right when Tetsujin was incapacitated. There is nothing but horror on his face as he realizes that all of that was his fault, and that he couldn't do anything to help his country in the end after Tetsujin defeats the out-of-control robot.
Imagawa does it again. The characters, the setting, the atmosphere, it's all fantastic here.
