Sailor Moon Mondays: Sailor Moon S: Episode 108:

Well then, it has been awhile since we had a group focused episode and this certainly was one, beyond that not much else as this just reeked of being one of those light before the darkness episodes. Well, we do see Usagi get drunk again, which is just not a thing that happens in anime anymore. Also, Hakura is apparently the most desirable human being in this universe given how entire rooms of people of both genders want to dance with her. All and all an inoffensive episode but not one that was all that worth watching, mild recommendation to avoid.

How good a show is is rated on my scale of "how badly do I want to see the next episode".
This season only BBB and Jojo met that mark. Soma has been fine. I watched the first 3 episodes of Arslan and it was fine but I feel like it should have been a lot better than it was given the pedigree. It was nice to see some relatively grounded fantasy but it never blew me away. I'll return to it but I'm in no rush. Everything else is kind of whatever :/ I feel Spring from last year was much better.

As for Arslan I think it's better if you binge watch it considering the pacing is slow, but since the whole cast has finally gathered in the last episode things should get going and get progressively better.

As always the season in which I'm less busy with schoolwork has pretty much no show that I'm interested in. Only thing on my plate right now is Prison School, tho I'm ready to be disappointed later this week when the info is revealed.

Not even the funniest example in World Trigger.

Wonder what it'd be like with sound. It'd be perfect if it's awkward silence too.

Huh. I felt like there were only 2 shows I really liked in Spring 2014 and one decent show.
Wixoss and Haikyuu were the good ones and Chaika was decent
Oh shit I forgot about Ping Pong, that one was excellent

Spring last year had Ping Pong and Mushishi, plus JoJo and a bunch of other fun little shows like Chaika, Kawaisou and NGNL so that makes it better then most seasons, probably.

I just watched the first episode of Arslan Senki because somebody mentioned it in this thread.

It's alright. I'll keep watching. Being from the guy who gave us LOGH, probably the finest anime ever, you expect greatness and uhhh, the first episode doesn't exactly live up to that. The beginning starts off just like the beginning of... well, Dune, right? Did anybody else think that was kinda a bit of a cliche? The prince is training with his military advisor to be a good swordsman because one day he'll be king and there are enemies all around them and he needs to be prepared and etc etc. It's basically the first five pages of Herbert's Dune. That seemed troubling to me.

Though, it does have a lot of the tell-tale trademarks from LOGH, so there is a feeling of familiarity. There's the random closeup shots of characters with their name and rank right under them, letting you know that they're gonna be important in the future, even though for now you have absolutely no idea who they are or why you should care. There's the narrator at the end of the episode, probably spoiling what's gonna happen in the next episode, which was pretty darn annoying in LOGH. And there's this feeling of an underlying theme that'll be explored throughout the series. In LOGH, it was a philosophical debate about which was better, a corrupt democracy or an enlightened dictatorship? Arslan seems to be presenting the tension between a fanatical theocracy which believes in equality among men, and a more egalitarian regime which nonetheless upholds slavery. That's some intriguing stuff, and I do look forward to seeing more of that play out in the coming seasons.

Some of the CGI is just unforgivable. There's this one overhead shot of some CGI guards robotically marching down the alley which just looked awful. Like something out of a mid 90s PS1 video game, when they were just transitioning to 3D models. Holy shit it was bad. What were they thinking? Is the budget that small? Good lord.

The environments are okay, they've got this kind of generic Assassin's Creed 1/Prince of Persia look to them which is competent, but not particularly memorable. Uh, the Prince's mother seems like a real cold bitch. Something's up with her. And his father, the King is probably going to die soon, just going by the ending scenes. Ya know, where the prince talks about how he's so young and his dad's gonna reign for a long, long time? Yeah, that King's a goner. Only thing worse is to be a cop two weeks before retirement. I'm not sure how the King's gonna get it, so it might be from the trusted court vizier, a la Aladdin, or it might be a family member, a la The Lion King, but... I don't think the King's gonna be around much long.

It's entertaining enough to watch, so I'll keep watching and posting. But I tell ya, it's gonna have to go a long way to get out from under the shadow of LOGH, which probably won't ever be topped. I need to see something fresh and interesting, and not just the first five pages from Dune.

Arslan is getting better and better. How many episodes are planned?

Probably a lot, if I were to guess. It's been running since '86.

Might make an effort to catch up on that after I finish Symphogear, but the first 3-4 episodes I watched kinda just made me think of Kingdom, which is really good, and how I wish this was more like Kingdom.

They both have bad CGI I guess

Stuff I'll probably watch

Umaru
Prison School
Working S3
Non Non Biyori S2

Stuff I might watch

Aria (because I've never seen anything from that series before)
Gakkou Gurashi (even though I thought the manga was a little disappointing)
Pervert School or whatever (because it looks dumb)
Joukamachi no Dandelion (because it looks dumb)

Stuff that I'll wait on

Aoharu x Kikanjuu (the description Anilist give it makes it sound like a comedy but the poster looks deadly serious)
Classroom Crisis (I have no idea what this actually is but people were posting about it earlier and I may as well)
Gangsta (I have no idea why people are so hyped for this and I know nothing about it apart from the fact that the title is stupid)

The Light of El Cantare

Generic ambient piano tension music.

World Trigger's score can basically be divided into "that one theme that plays when Yuma does something cool" and "everything else".

Some of us weren't lucky enough to have already learned our lesson with Tytania some years ago. RIP

You have to remember the Novel series was written in 1986 which was a long time ago, so the things that may of seem fresh back then may not be the same case as of right now.

Stuff I'll probably watch

Gangsta (I have no idea why people are so hyped for this and I know nothing about it apart from the fact that the title is stupid)

Read the manga and you'll see why.

This season, the good shows are Rin-ne and Yamada and the Seven Witches, and they're both great!

Can somebody explain to me what the series with the chibi-Saber in the bear suit is supposed to be about and why people are hype for it? I know nothing about it.
It's an occasionally moderately amusing and often numbingly stupid comedy (most often otaku-centric comedy) and incest-bait series about an otaku imouto girl and her big brother, a young salaryman. They live in a one-room apartment together, and she always makes a mess, eats junk food, plays videogames, goes to school, etc. and he tries to make her clean up, cooks, sometimes indulges her, goes to work, etc. She's got three female friends too, all of whom also have big brothers who they think well of, probably to a quasi-incestuous degree. I wish that I'd be wrong about this stuff sometimes, that there could be animes with siblings with normal relationships, or close ones, without the moronic incestbait you usually see... but in a show like this, aimed at the audience it is? Sadly, I doubt I am.

There's occasional fake yuribait and one of the girls might like Umaru's brother too, but make no mistake, almost all relationship stuff in the series is incestuous -- for the main pair, about how close they are, about how really the two of them don't like being apart despite how annoying she is (because of how she acts at home), etc etc. This series has almost no actual relationship anything in it, so don't expect something like Oreimo; this is a comedy series first. But when, for example, in one of the more recent chapters in the manga,
he goes on a business trip and she follows him on the trip because she Umaru got jealous because Onii-san was standing next to a woman (who is his boss) and is on a first-name basis with her. Then they touch a statue together, a statue where' it say that when two people touch this together good things happen for them'; and 'is supposed to be reserved for lovers, but there's no rule prohibiting siblings
... that's clear incest-bait, even if the series never has gone anywhere with it. Of course there's also that they live together in that one-room apartment (they each have their own half of the room; hers is always a mess, of course), neither having a boyfriend/girlfriend (because they care too much about eachother), stuff like that above, etc., but there aren't real relationships here. It's still really stupid though.

Oh, when not at home (eg. at school), Umaru is beautiful and popular, and acts like a normal girl of that type, though VERY little time is spent showing her school life, outside of interactions with those three friends of hers. Then she gets home and puts that hoodie thing on, and she turns into a one-foot-tall chibi. There's a running joke (it really isn't funny at all) about how people actually can't recognize her in the other "form", because she seems to actually change size even though that is quite impossible. One of the female friends thinks that Umaru and Umaru-with-hoodie are different people, for instance. :S I don't get it, but it's stupid.

So yeah, why are people looking forward to it? I really have no idea,.if the anime is anything like the manga it's going to be really dumb. I have read the manga, I admit it, but it's an awful series and it's a hate-read, for me, really. That and the chapters are only 8 pages each. Still, I hate it, but haven't managed to stop reading the manga yet. Bah. There are occasional amusing parts, but not nearly enough to actually justify reading it, much less watching an anime. And I definitely won't be watching the anime.

Some of us weren't lucky enough to have already learned our lesson with Tytania some years ago. RIP

Yeah, I definitely heard some horror stories about that one. I was thinking about giving it a look see, but the screencaps with the awful looking CGI ships was enough to dissuade me from that venture.

Sailor Moon Mondays: Sailor Moon S: Episode 109:

I for one am quite frankly shocked that everybody turn out to be the other everybody that looked and talked and acted like the other self. Yea, Sailor Moon has really always handled the secret identity thing really terribly, which is why they got that bit out of the way at the beginning of a given arc.In the 1990s anime, we are just flat out never given a reason why the simple deductions were never made. Basically this made for less of a whole bunch of shocking moments and more, yea, you all should have pieced this knowledge ages ago on all sides of the equation. Anyway, speaking of continuity, they actually remembered that Minkao had up to this point never been attacked over her pure heart and that is eating at her. Basically we get a lot of comedy involving her search to find pure heartiness, including giving blood and somehow drinking about 50 5-hour energy vials. Basically this is the catalyst for next week's episode, which is promising to be the world shaking episode that will alter the game yet again. Mild recommendation to watch.

Summer, eh?

Will watch:
Charlotte
Himouto! Umaru-chan
Miss Monochrome - The Animation 2
Non Non Biyori Repeat
Teekyuu 5

Might watch, depending on impressions here:
Gakkou Gurashi!
Sore ga Seiyuu!
Working!!!

Oh yeah, one other thing... the intros for LOGH beat the shit out of this intro sequence for Arslan. I mean, the LOGH intros might've been a little cheesy, but I'll take that over this grating J-Pop nonsense any day. Completely inappropriate music.

I've been trying to figure out who could even theoretically do Prison School at this point. Most studios are accounted for next season.

The only ones left are seemingly:

Sunrise
B Studio at BONES
That Trigger/Mizushima project
Production IG

Some of the above have major shows in the Fall such as Haikyuu so that might be draining resources. It's really bizaree we have no info or even leaks at this juncture.

Looks like a typical self contained story limited to 20 minutes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, to be clear, there's no dialogue at all explaining why the character would change their mind on what appears to be a sacred, centuries old tradition.

It's about a girl who is a prodigy and a beauty at school and an otaku slob at home, with her overworked brother struggling to manage her boistrousness. Basically just a fun little gag manga that's getting animated by Dogakobo!

making the ot for summer is going to be fun

pls dont get it locked people

We are apparently getting info this week.

It's porn so they had to entirely outsource it to Korea.

It's art though!

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o! TV anime by DEEN, directed by Takaomi Kanasaki, series composition Makoto Uezu , character design Koichi Kikuta

http://sneakerbunko.jp/series/konosuba/

Kazuma Satou is a shut in who loves game, his life ended suddenly... Appearing before him is a beautiful girl claiming to be a goddess. Kazuma who was transported to a different world worked hard to earn a living! Kazuma wanted to live a stable life, but was burdened with problems caused by the goddess he brought along to the different world with him. He was even targeted by the demon king's army!?

Sounds usual LN.

The Avvenire next season? When I finish the rest of Aria and witness its final chapter I can finally say I'm done with anime as nothing will likely top it.

I'm actually curious as to how much is due to the current anime being an adaptation of an adaptation from a different author, or how much of it is due to the lacking of the original source material. It's been a while since I saw the original OVA series, so I might rewatch that eventually and see how it compares to the current.

Yeah, I dunno. Never caught the original OVA, so I can't speak to that.

Just watched the second episode. Holy shit. Okay, that was really good. Wow.

Gangsta looks interesting.

Non Non Biyori is a definite watch.

DBZ Super is going to be shit. I have no faith in Toei. Will only watch after a fair amount of episodes have been released and its confirmed to be semi decent.

Rokka no Yuusha
Overlord
Prison School
Akagami no Shirayuki hime
Aoharu x Kikanjuu

Gunbuster 04

Pretty good episode. I have a few nitpicks such as the random fanservice scene of Jung sunbathing in what looked like the ship's transportation center and a scene where the background escalators are animated and the foreground characters look like statues. Other than that I'm impressed.

It's obvious this is Anno's work with the focus on Takaya's PTSD. He also seems to love character reflection while they're sitting next to vending machines (I remember this in both Eva and the Rebuilds). Takaya's face when coach benches her after going through grueling training lessons was powerful and I think the turning point she needed to get in the fucking robot. The commander's reluctance to send out Gunbuster in a no win scenario was a little odd. It was mentioned Gunbuster was still a prototype and it may not function correctly but it seemed like the best weapon they had, why not use it? The final action scenes between Gunbuster and the alien amoebas was well directed and fun to watch. With everything wrapped up and the character's development concluded this could have been the final episode. I'm curious to see where it goes from here.

Well, to be clear, there's no dialogue at all explaining why the character would change their mind on what appears to be a sacred, centuries old tradition.

I don't think dialogue is necessary to set it up.

Duke Freid has just seen the power of the Zaibach Guymelefs first hand, watching his troops get massacred; the only reason he is still alive is that Allen's saved him. The situation is futile. He's not saying he wants to give up the secret to the Power of Atlantis; he's saying that it's clear to him that, given the insurmountable odds, the gods must want it to be revealed (Freid is introduced to us as an incredibly religious place - one of the very first establishing shots at the start of the Zongi arc is of all the monks, if I remember rightly).

During his speech the "montage" shows his thought processes - we cut to sepia-toned flashbacks to the destruction wrought on Freid, corpses everywhere etc. Surely that's enough motivation for him to essentially surrender at this point?

Is the adaptation bad? My friend rec'd it to me so I'm contemplating whether to watch it first or not.
The anime is good , but the VN is really, REALLY superior.
No contest.

My current list for summer is as follows:
Your post is incomplete .

prisma illya 2wei herz
Lol.
It can't be a bad season , i mean it has
gilgamesh in it !

All they need is to animate the "truth serum" arc , and nobody will complain about prisma illya anymore.

I'm pretty curious about this 'Overlord' show Madhouse is doing next season.
72748l.jpg

The books are excellent, it's a superb spin on the "trapped in another world" sub-genre ..if they don't mess-up the characters, this is a must-watch no doubt about it.
Became a fan from the second chapter of the first book.My only problem is that people will again compare it to that anime, again,AGAIN *sigh*

abf wrong yet again about p. much everything

Lol every time I think we might see eye to eye on things falco you swing it right around

For the record I don't see any incest bait at all in umaru. All that stuff is just your standard "I care about family" stuff

We summer listing? Here's what I am gonna check out:

- God Eater
- Charlotte
- Classroom Crisis
- Durarara!!x2
- Gangsta
- Gate
- Prison School
- Ranpo Kitan
- Working!!!
- Rokka no Yuusha

Arslan is getting better and better. How many episodes are planned?
25 episodes are planned for this adaptation. Additional ones would have to be planned for a different work (OVA/additional season).

omg new euphonium preview
make it so kyoani
It's kinda nostalgic to see this scene. That's where I really fell in love with Takeda's work and Takeda as an author. Reading v3 now and it feels like so much time has gone by since this point.

I would shop more with Aniplex if they just offered more standard releases. Every thing seems to be a "limited edition" bundled with cds, "artbooks", and postcards I'll never use. Seems like it jacks up the price tremendously too. I've bought the Madoka Rebellion movie from them with no problem since it was decently priced and had a standard release. They're offering standard releases for Kill La Kill, so that's a start.

The "Limited Editions" are how Aniplex makes their money. Most series won't be able to simultaneously sell both a LE and a RE version, so they go with a LE to both give the fans something extra and to make more money (to pay for the licenses, which pay for the production of the shows). Don't count on regular editions being a thing.

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"

Oh I totally agree with you, especially when quality and performance are concerned. However, with regards to Euphonium, you should have no worries there. PONYCAN US, so far, seems to maintain that high quality standard on par with AOA (Denki-Gai in particular uses a 50GB disc for 4 episodes, and it shows) . I honestly try to stay away from a lot of the Funimation releases because of the compromises in video quality.

My original point was just that i'm not as enthusiastic as others when it comes to something like Fate/Zero. I'm more than happy to pay premium for the shows I like if the quality is there to match.

I can attest to the excellent quality of Pony Canyon products as well.
Yuuki Yuuna packaging is outstanding.

THAT HAIR !!!

Look at that hair !!

I feel like something got stuck in ...well ..you know ...

He looks like the victim of a middle school swirly.

B Gata was a lot of fun. I love childish crude humor, so it kept me very entertained. Plus, the whole set up with her being the super awkward, but highly aggressive one was hilarious in itself.

Seitokai Yakuendomo huh. What's this one about? I'll have to look it up.

I'm going to o start Little Busters soon as I've heard it's pretty good, plus it has baseball in it, so it's a bonus, lol. Now, in regards to Clannad if you like Slice of life dramas, this is a serious must watch, and must post/share. The first season may be slow at times, however, it is one big set up for Clannad After Story which was amazing. I mean a complete whirlwind of events and emotions. So much so that the last 8-10 episodes should be watched back to survive.

B Gata is one of the funniest things ever. SYK is basically a bunch of sex jokes, sorta like B Gata, which is probably why it was recommended.
