Miss Hokusai
What a weird film. Not very long (85 minutes?) I was a bit perplexed how the story was being so slow to takeoff after the first scenes. Later as still felt unfocused, I understood this was going to be a SoL story, without a strong plot. But even accepting the genre as slice of life, this felt really directionless. Sometimes you had a scene about a
activity, later another scene which doesn't have anything to do with the previous scene about the protagonist going to see a fire by night, and after that a third scene about her with her little sister, which also doesn't have anything to do with the two previous scenes. It was more a collection of vignettes which even felt lazy, just because you are doing a biopic (because the painter existed in real life) doesn't mean you shouldn't try to form a cohesive whole. Some of the scenes come because they try to tie in famous paintings scenes in the film and even if there is a pair of good moments on them, it still feels pretty flimsy.
The only hint of heart in the story is the rift between the father and the blind daughter, but it's a small part and it doesn't go anywhere interesting, even if I liked the naturality of their reactions.
