This is probably a sign of how the AnimeGAF community has changed, but several years ago the impression I had of Welcome to the NHK formed by people here was negative. It was generally considered to be a poor treatment of its material compared with the manga and especially the original novel.

I haven't read the original material the anime was derived from so I can't compare them, but I'd say it was one of the better shows I've watched by virtue of how rarely you see shows that tackle the themes and issues NHK brought up.

The anime is the worst version of the story.

Eh i just treat them all as different takes on the story. There would be no possible way to get the novel or manga version on TV without significant backlash or revisions.

Edit: Though Misaki manga>all other versions.

Show hurry up and ship some couples. Mari's brother was a pretty nice guy.

I could never get past the fact that the two main guys in NHK were into porn games featuring explicitly under aged girls. And then they follow this up with the main guy perving on actual children in the bushes outside a school. Like I get there was a bit more to it and these people do exist, but I just found it impossible to root for the guy after that.

It's a shame because I feel like I'm missing out on a good show, but I just kind of can't accept it and move on to watch it anyway.

Lemme say that I was about to drop the show during the bunch of episodes focusing on making the ero game but god damn am I glad I kept going because it gets so damn good past that. I think your reaction to that creeping is what's pretty much expected or intended by the show. In case you'll return to the series you'll see that it doesn't try to glorify or excuse his depravity, rather does the opposite.

I can't speak for the source novel and manga adaptation, but by itself I think Welcome to the NHK is definitely a really good show to me, with the exception of the bunch of ero game episodes.

This show has the worst antagonistsand plotline that I can think of Ar the moment. If I though all the headpatting and crap was bad in S1, I'm sorry... This is worse, IMO. It's so predictable and stupid. School with
special political connections and gets to cheat in battles then uses kidnapping to further their goal
is a crock of crap. Oh wait, there is the little creep girl right there to
"save the day" and pretend she is going to help. Fuck her, her s hool, her take tics and her crappy ultimate A.I ambitions.
I think I'm finally going to smash my screen watching the show next week. I am interested to see how they are going to pace the final three episodes of the season with a bunch of potholes still open though...

I've been meaning to ask (not many actually watching this) but is it worth a watch? Any good ships?

I saw Welcome to the NHK at a time I was in the exact same predicament as Satoru. Same age as well, found out some things about myself I barely even noticed - case in point: "conspiracy syndrome".

Episode 14 had one of the most memorable and moving moments for me,
when the medical student's parents come and visit them in the hotel, his mom slaps him and asks him to stop worrying about the clinic

Fuck, you guys are making me cry reminding all these anime.

As much crap as Parasyte gets for its second half the parents were amazingly deep and involved when you compare to the neglectful or one dimensional parents in other shows.

This dad really is a jerk. He brings all the trouble, indeed.

I can't speak to Welcome to the NHK directly, since I have no personal experience with any of its versions, but treating unique subjects isn't enough for me to call for me to call something good. For example, World War II era spy dramas are uncommon in anime (and not even all that common in live-action; usually you either get World War II era soldier dramas or Cold War era spy dramas), but Joker Game is still bad.

I can definitely see how it is problematic to some, the main protagonist doesn't come across as a likeable guy in his present state. Submerging himself into an unhealthy porn obsession, fantasying about a girl he barely knows but thus far the show hasn't tried to paint him in some positive light. And as long as it continues to stick to that I'm enjoying what I'm watching so far.

Yeah for me the show hasn't really glorified that, it just plays on these characters delusions, at least I hope it does. How the two guys thought they were going to become billionaires and how quickly and badly Satou falls into a crazed poor addiction. I'm not going to say it isn't a little bit offputting, but I get the feeling that's the sort of reaction the show wants to evoke from me as it tries to reflect how and why these characters act like this.

Actually the most common criticism I've heard of the anime is that it is too watered-dowm and kind in its portrayal of the protagonist, lacking the uncompromisingly harsh nature of the novel.

Kiznaiver 5

Nico's hat game is strong, even in the shower. Speaking of which, no Maki in the shower hmm? In combination with her and Yuta's scene together that could suggest body issues.

Yeah all four couples are fun in their own way and are established pretty early on, heck there's one actual pre-existing relationship right from the get-go. Its only 10 minutes an episode so you get a few laughs and a bit of progress every episode, its hard not to like it.

Go on not enough people are watching it. Ill even consider giving Clannad another go if you jump on board lol.

But the robots are the best characters of the show!
Also just pointing out that the school behind the kidnapping is not the same as the school behind the robots entering the tournament.
There was that one scene were the head of Le Wolfe met Ernesta and Camilla, but given their personalities I think they refused and he just continued on his own because he gives no fucks.
The entire kidnapping subplot sucks a lot though, that is true.

I mean from what I've read that is true but it's still pretty damn uncompromising. Besides, we know that close adaptations aren't a sign of quality and if the studio had their hands forced because they'd be breaking the law otherwise, changes must be made.

I've seen a damn good anime called Welcome to the NHK. My opinion on that will likely not change. Might be I'll end up liking the novel and manga better when I eventually read them but I doubt they'll make this show seem substantially worse in return.

Btw. we can add Welcome to the NHK to the list of shows with proper parents involvement.

Oh god I remember this arc. This fight took like a whole volume of the manga to finish and I didn't particularly like it. Oh and new ED, again.

Of course that's not all there was to it. It was a good show that dealt with the theme of depression in an interesting way. A novel setting and themes don't make a good show by themselves, but are solid steps in the right direction. I agree that Joker Game is an example of a show that does that but still has bad execution resulting in a mediocre show at best, but on the other hand you've got stuff such as Rakugo.

On the other hand there's stuff such as Kiznaiver, which sounded like a fairly generic show at the start but has grown on me over time due to its good execution. Still, I'm much more likely to try a show that looks or tackles novel themes than high school club or isekai antics, even though it's true that execution's a big part of it.

As another example, I was initially interested in Rokka because of the seldom seen mesoamerican setting up until I heard it was a mere reskin from a classic middle-earth setting and saw its atrocious CGI monster battles; then I picked it back up when I heard it had become a closed circle mystery, even though it ended up being kind of meh with several ass-pulls and a really unsatisfying ending that introduced yet another seventh brave.

Sword of the Stranger

I've seen that a while ago and: #teamDuckroll #teamEveryoneButPhaze

I mean these sort of 'former soldier redemption' stories are extremely common and usually offer little of interest me nowadays, especially since you can put only so much nuance in under 2 hours, however, this was one damn fine executed example. The full regretful flashback we get before Nanashi storms to the final rescue really got me quite emotional. It's also not too common that these kind of characters actually did perform a real atrocity as he did.
Actually murdering two children on command. Often times it's moments like this where the heroes of the story had actually rebelled against their superiors and simply end up feeling regret for participating in terrible wars and/or hurting their former brothers in arms upon escaping.

I don't need to say much to the action, I figure. Sublime and succinct.

Wait, wasn't that girl who made to robots having a flashback of her convo with the perp. at the end of the episode? Same guy Ayato met with for info on his sis?

Now that is a watch bet I will take you up on in a heartbeat. Having you watch Clannad is worth it in every way!

Have only watched Kabeneri this season but got around to watching the first episode of Flying Witch. Pretty cute and calm. The ending theme shows a colorful cast of characters too. I guess I'm on board.

Huh, you're right. I completely missed that.
Though it seems she is either regretting that she made the deal, or worried that he did it either way even though they refused.
...Eh, this subplot sucks.

RE:ZERO episode 6

Great episode, had some nice world building and characterization, and the MC didn't really feel like an complete idiot. As with the last few episodes , show went dark at the end of the episode, and the culprit was finally revealed. Should be a good one next week.

Re:Zero #6

All of you who disliked Subarus lack of initiative last week (although I still think it was justified): this episode was for you.

It also had some nice worldbuilding and Subarus interactions with Puck und Emilia continue to be the bestest. The fact that his relationships keep resetting with every death is also showing to gnaw on him. He's keeping a LOT of things bottled up, as this episode showed us more then once, and I think those things are going to explode out sooner rather then later.

Next episode will be great.

You're getting characters confused. The girl he meets at the end is
Sylvia from Queenvail Girls Academy

She's just having a flashback like "Hmmm obviously that guy was planning something, who knows what's going to happen"

Nothing worth noting. Their official twitter says there are more events happening later this year, with a super important announcement being made during Soushi's birthday event.

So, in other words, we can keep hoping.

Which is on December 27th. Christ, Japanese marketing really loves to draw shit out.

better then my hero academia. Super's comedy episodes are actually the best Dragon Ball comedy episodes, easily

Re:ZERO Ep. 6

Subaru kicked into gear in this episode and I like that they are limiting Emilia's powers, with Betty explaining that she can't treat mortal wounds just stabilise people, which should preserve a sense of danger in the future. I'm starting to wonder if the reset is after the point at which the decision to kill Subaru has already been made,
his choosing to just mooch off Roswaal doesn't appear to have changed the kill Subaru timetable at all. In ep 4 & 5 you could argue that Rem and Ram were still evaluating his potential as a spy over the 5 days he tried to be a servant but neither interacted much with him in this loop yet ep 4 seemed to have Roswaal discussing it with Ram as if it wasn't a done deal they were killing him
.

Wasn't it explicitly stated that she grew into her figure now at an early age?

Oh, was it? For some reason I had it in my mind that all we had for Maki were the surrealist scenes/disembodied voice and no facts, so assuming you're right this episode follows that pretty naturally.

Hyouka 14-17
Very neat wrap-up to the culture festival arc. However, I thought the arc was a bit lacking compared to the stories on Hyouka and the movie arc. Specifically, the thief story, even though it had a good conclusion, it didn't seem really fleshed out until the final episode. And the arc used less cool visuals than usual. Probably both of these problems can be attributed to its length, though. Nevertheless, it delivered again and I loved
how they connected everything. Their problem of selling anthologies, the manga society story and the thief. Really amazing job on handling multiple plot-threads. Everything fitted perfectly on the theme of "expectations". I really felt bad for Fukube as his passion is remarkable and I love his attitude. His expression during his scene with Mayaka was a big "I give up". Pretty sad.

I may have said that it was a bit lacking, but it's probably the best arc so far. The thing in the spoilers, the characters' struggles, the humor and the festive atmosphere, all of them made it excellent.
