Spring Anime 2016 |OT| Get a Season So Complicated

Not open for further replies.
I played First Chapter for 9 hours. In that time, I was struck by the sheer density of the world-building. Even just through the prologue, almost everyone in the town has their own little story that progresses with just about every action you take. It's remarkable.

But I was also struck with the density of lengthy fodder battles that don't particularly test the player in any way. A huge percentage of my time playing was spent doing pretty boring fights out in the field. I gave up because I felt like the game wasn't using my time effectively.

I guess I'm not much of a JRPG person in general.

The combat in the Trails in the Sky games is really poorly paced. I basically used cheat engine's speed hack to run through some of the dungeons more quickly. It's one thing Cold Steel greatly improved on.

Crap, yeah, I forgot Your Lie in April and Barakamon. Anohana could go on that list as well, of you can get her to watch after those early scenes in episode 1.

The other shows are mostly easy to watch as a couple, especially for someone who probably only watches casually..

Clannad especially, if she stays interested enough through the first season has such a great story to it and is very very rewarding to watch as a couple, especially with the themes it presents.

Clannad is one of the all time greats.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 22

Just like the last few episodes...this is going to take me a few minutes to process. I thought Lelouch for a second, for the sake of everyone involved, that he would go ahead and accept the
UNF proposal as he was weakening Britania for a good portion of the episode
, so I don't know what the play here is. I've never been this dumbfounded in a show before. I just don't see it. I don't see the outcome Lelouch is looking torwards.

And WHAT THE ACTUAL SHIT!
Nunnally is alive
!? And she's
declaring war on Lelouch.
This is some M Night Shamalan bullshit twist going on here. Holy SHIT! Jshdbdjeudysnejsudhenejdudychejsosusndgcydjwksi!!!

Lelouch always has a plan, he has unlimited prep time, he is BATMAN
But really, he does have a plan and you will be fucking mindblown by it

White Fox produced both Steins;Gate and currently Re:Zero. Yeah they didn't write it but it's not too much to assume they're familiar with these time travel stories (considering Steins;Gate) and the familiar story beats between the two shows right now.

Except for a handful of animators and finishers, Re:Zero and Steins;Gate don't share any staff. Remember that most studios rely heavily on freelancers and are not made up of a monolithic team that works on all their productions.

Because my car was towed for stupid reasons and it happened before the yard was closed for the holiday today, I spent some time catching up on Netoge.

Student Council President and Akane are really good, and LMAO the teacher is awesome.

What the fuck! What the FUCK!? WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!?

That shift in music when
Nunnally opened her eyes
freaked me out! And I cannot believe
Lelouch's plan for his brother
actually worked out.
Diethard got what was coming to him.
When I saw him
defect out of the Black Knights and equally turn away from Lelouch
I knew he was so screwed. Ugh. I feel it coming. Someone really important is about to die. I just know it's gonna happen.

Oh God... I don't know if I can do it. The last episode. Oh man.

Girls und Panzer der Film

This is a good example of how to successfully translate a TV anime into a film. It takes everything the Girls und Panzer TV series did and does it again, only on a more cinematic level - greater visual flair (the Miho flashback sequence was particularly impressive), and a particularly large scale for the battle that made up about half the film. There were a lot of the creative tactics that I expect from the franchise, especially during the showdown in the amusement park, which was an inspired setting. I do wish they could have come up with a better excuse for the battle than "You thought you saved the school by winning the championship? Psych! It's closing down today!" The characters are all likable enough in their simplistic ways, but I can't say I really care about them or about what happens to their school. But in the end that's just an excuse plot. People come to Girls und Panzer to see quirky characters fight quirky tank battles, and that's exactly what this film provided.

On a side note, comparing this to Mayoiga makes the gap between Mizushima caring and Mizushima not really caring very obvious.

I have no idea what you're talking about! There's absolutely nothing on top of those robots!

Nothing that could possibly indicate that this show will be anything less than the hot-blooded, super-robot action packed super robot show it will be! Nothing!

Just watch Concrete Revolutio.

I'll check it out after I knock a show or two off my list.

Girls und Panzer der Film

This was an excellent action movie.

One thing this movie makes me realize is that anime doesn't really do action set-pieces all that much. Sure, characters will clash in flurries of martial arts or magical attacks, or mechs will punch each other in the face. But true action set-pieces, with events occurring in multiple locations at once, tightly choreographed, making full use of the environment around them, are actually pretty rare. One of my favorite examples of this is the battle against the Gouf Custom in episode 10 of MSG: 08th MS Team, where the protagonist's squad is defending an anti-air gun from a major enemy character while Zeon forces attempt to evacuate.

Girls und Panzer, on the other hand, is a series about action set-pieces. Miho's success as a tank commander lies in her ability to make use of the terrain around her to its fullest extent, leveraging the skills and tendencies of her companions. The events are exciting because of our awareness of the entire space in which these battles take place, and because of the balancing of multiple perspectives to build tension. Many of the best moments of the series (like the race to take out the Pravda flag tank as the Ooarai flag tank evades enemy fire) are built from tense, exciting montages that call on film techniques going back to the age of silent movies.

The movie delivers exactly what you'd want and expect from this franchise, bringing the cast back together for more exciting and perfectly-safe tank battles. There's a lengthy section of drama that has to be there to establish the emotional stakes for this battle (which is set on a pretty flimsy foundation), but the bulk of the film consists of the most satisfying tank combat we've seen yet, with the final battle clocking in at something like fifty unbroken minutes of action. The franchise's heavy use of CG for the tanks gives the camera incredible freedom to place the viewer high overhead for sweeping large-scale views, or right in the cockpit as a tank pursues an enemy. Everything is handled really, really well. I'd be thrilled to watch it again just to pay more attention to how all the individual pieces of the battle come together.

The final, almost dialogue-free tank encounter is the perfect way to finish an already-remarkable film. I don't think it's perfect, but it nails exactly what it's going for. Highly recommended. A movie would have to be truly special in my eyes to beat it this year.

The mecha designs do look like they could make for some pretty great Super Robot action. I share your optimism there.

But the characters, at least on the surface, don't inspire a lot of confidence. This might well be an incorrect assumption though!

Never cared for either of them myself, to put it lightly.

As for the rest...
yes, the series does love to have death fake outs. Did they actually show you Guilford dying? Nah, they cut away when he could have ejected. It's kind of BS, but also not totally impossible.

GirlPan got really good at CG, too, especially blending it with the anime elements. I remember that first tank battle in GuP and being utterly horrified at how bad it looked. It still looks alien compared to the more usual style, to be sure, but it no longer looks bad

It's already not my favorite anime film of 2016, but that's mainly down to my personal tastes leaning towards more atmospheric and intimate narratives, as well as more character investment. I agree that Girls und Panzer der Film delivers precisely what you'd want from it, and share your admiration for its large-scale setpieces. The last anime film I watched that did that well was Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie.

Yes, the movie blends CG and 2D together nearly seamlessly, and takes full advantage of that with ambitious camera movements.

Anybody knows how long JoJo will last?

39 episodes.

If it would deliver high-octane, hot-blooded action with that kind of character designs, it might be worth watching just for the quaintness of it all.

Fuck.

Sorry, still decompressing that ending so I may curse here and there. It's a lot to take in at once. The last few episodes really felt accelerated and just had so much packed in it's hard not to be a little shocked.

I am not going to lie, I was freaking out the entire episode. A lot of "WHAT THE FUCK!?"'s thrown around all episode. The clash of ideologies. The scenes constantly melding together and the dialogue leading into the next characters line was brilliant. When
Lelouch used Geass on Nunnally
I think was the first time I said "Screw you Lelouch!"
And it really broke my heart to see him do that to his sister.

Seeing everyone being lead to
their execution including Nunnally
was a complete shock, but the way Lelouch loves his sister and how he reacted to what she said before
he used his Geass on her
, I knew he wasn't going to go through with it. Seeing him smile as he was
stabbed by Suzaku masquarading as Zero
really sent chills down my spine. It was interesting to see how everyone reacted when
Lelouch was stabbed with the sword. It's a true tragedy, one that only Suzaku, Kallen, and Nunnally will truly know who Lelouch was and what he did to ensure that his sister could live on happily and that the world could move forward.

Holy shit! HOLY SHIT!!! That was good. That was really good. I just...I need a moment...

Lelouch always has a plan, he has unlimited prep time, he is BATMAN
But really, he does have a plan and you will be fucking mindblown by it

There is a method to his insanity.
Holy crap...

Haha, this Code Geass R2 watch commentary is fun to read.

You should've seen my School Days reactions.

People's reactions to R2 are never not fun to read.

Someone watching Code Geass for the first time is what made me a regular in AnimeGAF.

I did not know this. I remember coming into AnimeGAF. I always thought it was Madoka and Gurren Lagaan.

You're so close at discovering Lelouch's GRAND PLAN, you can do it man I believe

And now...I know.

FINISH IT, PSHYCONINJA!!

YOU'RE ALREADY THERE!!

And...FINISHED. GODDAMNIT!!

Remember: Oranges are Tomatoes.

I...don't get it.

Never cared for either of them myself, to put it lightly.

As for the rest...

I am a sucker for romances in anime, so I had a vested interest. And I felt like it payed off in the end.

As for the second point...yeah...

Glad you liked the ending! I always love how reactions to the ending usually range from people losing their minds or legitimately enjoying it. They're always fun to read.

Code Geass was such a success that Sunrise has kept trying (and failing) to recapture its magic ever since.

If they managed to pull that off and somehow not turn off the audience who isn't there primarily for the little girls, it would certainly be impressive.

Ah yes, that ending. I completely relate to everything you said over the past few episodes, I had the same train of thought as I watched.

Bravo, PshycoNinja. It's always fun to see somebody watch Code Geass for the first time, LOL

Even though I have been on this forum for years (with obvious long absences) and been watching anime for quite sometime, I have some very obvious gaps in my anime watching. Especially when it comes to mecha anime. Back when I started the first season of Code Geass I started School Days because I was curious about both, they were on my list to watch, and they were also on The List. So I decided what the hell. Both have provided responses that I didn't expect from either one.

Of course it took me a lot longer than I expected to actually finish Code Geass. Shouldn't have taken me so long.

Glad you liked the ending! I always love how reactions to the ending usually range from people losing their minds or legitimately enjoying it. They're always fun to read.

Don't you like how my reaction to the ending was a little of BOTH!? I cannot help but enjoy the craziness that I saw. Yet I lost it when everything went down. I just gave myself a few minutes before I started to post. I needed to get as much of the crazy out of me before I posted.

I knew it was crazy when I started. So I just sat back and enjoyed the madness that played out in front of me.

Ah. Yes. The days when we all posted our reactions by typing out our exact thoughts in that moment and posting those "notes" or "thoughts" so that way people could see the unfiltered thought in the moment-by-moment/play-by-play format it was. I remember doing that for a while. Some people liked it and others did not. It was hard to breed discussion from a format like that but man was it fun to read someone's unfiltered thoughts in a moment in a show you were wondering how they would react to it. But I digress.

I don't understand the whole tomato thing. I guess the show really got to him. Lol.

Edit: Also, it's comforting to know that someone other than me wanted to see Nina die. I guess we're not so different after all...

So... Not to derail a little, and I should probably just stay in the drunk thread, but where's that Yoshiaki Kawajiri chap these days? Thought I heard some garbo about him retiring but I refused to believe it. All I've got are his "classics" that I sorta revel in lol. I keep hoping for a few solid remasteres or collections.
Speaking of which, there really should be a Slayers bluray collection in NA by now, what gives?
Just keeping tabs at Anime news network and I saw some updates for Battle Angel live action and it almost sounds promising, like I could watch it without the guilt lol.

Kawajiri is getting on in the years, at this point. Most of his own projects have failed to get off the ground, but he's still been doing work on other Madhouse productions relatively recently - he did some storyboard work on One Punch Man, for example. Wouldn't really expect to see him outright direct anything at this point, though - to this day, he's only helmed one TV show, and that's basically where the industry is these days.

Speaking of Action Setpieces, what's a good space warship thing to watch with Action Setpieces? Preferably with less Giant Robots. I love a good space battle.

Hell, even in Western media I guess. That's the best part about Star Wars. Fuck your lightsabres, it's all about taking down capital ships with snubfighters.
