Square on DQ11 Switch: Still planned but no announcement. Can't discuss release date.

By announcing the game for switch years ago When literally no other 3rd party was?

Maybe it really is one executive wants it on Switch, everyone else is giving him the side-eye and backpedaling and covering their butts. I mean, that kinda happened.

Not really but it'd be funny.

If their is some marketing deal from the West I'd be surprised if Nintendo didn't attempt to grabit. Considering they brought over 7&8 and the switch needs high profile games.

Couldn't the switch version include both the PS4 and 3DS games.

Been wondering this too.

But, if I can toss reality out the window for a sec, I'd love a version that offered a mode where you play and progress through the game while it alternated between all 3 art styles every 5 or 10 minutes. Put it on Switch to offer both console and portable options and it'd be my goat way to play the game.

Could also be that a Switch version doesn't add to existing numbers, it only eats away at PS4 and 3DS numbers. The two current models supplement each other, a Switch version is inherently parasitic. It would make more sense to release later and not give people any reason to wait.

Could be all those things.
This was where I was getting at. A Switch version/compilation would inherently kill the sales of the other two versions, and S-E wants to maximize its figures before pushing for a newer/"definitive" version (in the same way I Am Setsuna is getting exclusive Switch DLC, despite the game releasing earlier in other playforms).

Development of Switch version is still behind and SE doesn't want to delay all versions in favor of a simultaneous release. There aren't conspiracies everywhere.

Behind? Saying it's "still planned" sounds like they haven't even started on the Switch version yet. Or else they might have said something like it's in development.

I expect the Switch version to have:

-Voice acting added (like the DQVIII 3DS port)
-One or two new playable characters (ditto)
-Maybe switch between 3D and 2D graphics on the fly

Release it 6-12 months later.

My theory and final hope is they're saving it for the direct tomorrow and it is day and date with the other two skus. Maybe that's why he said he couldn't confirm or deny it would be released at the same time as the other two but could confirm its still happening.

My expectation is that it is late in japan, but the localization process takes long enough to where it comes out in the west with or close to the other two versions.

If they were going to drop a reveal like that they would have correctly labeled it as a Dragon Quest direct.

Don't expect much more besides ARMs, Splatoon, and hopefully some online features.

Yeah, don't see it affect the localisation at all. Still sucks for Japanese Switch owners.

The Switch version isn't going to "kill" the sales of either the 3DS version or the PS4 version. It may eat into those sales to some varying extent, but that's about it.

The 3DS version is going to trounce the other two versions, no matter what happens with the Switch version.

One or more 3DS games also will be discussed during the next Direct.

At this point why even bother? A late port will bomb, period. Most of the audience will have already bought it on the other platforms.

Release it simultaneously, or don't release it at all.

So it is coming. This removes the previous sting of not announcing it immediately. It's understandable they had less time to fully grasp what they can do with the Switch compared to the other 2 platforms.

Nintendo Japan sent out an email about the 3DS version yesterday. Square's tweet makes me think it's plausible the switch version releases day and date. Saying they can't say whether it will or not invites us to think it might but who knows.

If this game doesn't release day and date it is a huge missed opportunity for the switch though. Very few people will be waiting around for a switch version. I can understand the idea of having a games blowout at e3 for the switch but while switch owners are sitting around twiddling their thumbs while game news comes in every week for 3ds and PS4 the hype is going to die.

Isn't the dual screen stuff only for the start of the game, then it becomes a single screen game with menu shit on the other screen?

Ahh if it's like that then ya it could work. Haven't really looked into the info of the stuff outside of the small videos we've gotten. Would be awesome to see though for sure

Doubt it, but I hope it's true just to see a fantastical PS4+3DS+Switch bundle announced on a Nintendo Direct.

People expecting the possibility of the Switch version being a combination of the PS4 and 3DS game need to think about it harder. That's 2 complete different engines with different processes and with save files likely being incompatible, or at least requiring some conversion between the two modes. That would go against the instant switching from docked to handheld mode that I've done when playing Zelda. It'd probably require a load time of 1-2 mins in that case. Nevermind I'm sure I read that the PS4 version is a 40GB download, bigger than the 32GB current max Switch cart size, and that's not including the 3DS game and it's assets either.

The Switch game will be one or the other. As much as I'd prefer it to be the 3DS game to ensure a Western version and to play it on better hardware, it's likely to be based off the PS4. Just not ready yet

Yeah, AFAIK at some point you need to permanently choose which version of the game you want to play through, so making it work on the Switch should be feasible.

Well it is Nintendo and they like to keep announcements close to there chest. NDA, has been going around I heard.

They announced for NX because the "Switch" name was under insanely high NDA, they probably have been working on it for awhile. It will come sooner than most expect.

Slightly off the topic of the Switch version, but does anyone know why SE decided to create 3 graphically different versions of the game? I mean, choices are great for consumers, but this would have both been expensive and logistically difficult for them to produce, no?

It's the 30th anniversary of one if not the most popular Japanese gaming series (in Japan). They wanted to go all out.

They announced development two years ago.

So? Dev kits weren't ready 2 years ago. Most likely scenario is they got Switch dev kits in middle of development and instead of making a 3rd version they decided to concentrate effort for 3DS/PS4 version. Which makes sense both financially and development wise. Also all this talk of Sony having some kind of deal when 3DS version exists make no sense.

SO? Dev kits weren't ready 2 years ago.

It's highly unlikely that the DQXI team wasn't among the very first third parties to get dev kits, though I agree that they probably weren't available as early as the initial announcement; the WSJ report on the first dev kits arriving was a few months later in October 2015, which I'd guess is when Nintendo's closest third-party partners like Capcom and SE started receiving them.

The 3DS version is not the UE4 version.

So you think some kind of deal exist that specifies the engine the game is running on?

That's interesting because the Switch reveal and lack of 3rd party announcements tells us that developers didn't have much time with the machine.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
People on both sides are trying too hard IMO. By far the most likely scenario is the developers were under a time crunch and getting out 3 versions simultaneous was just too difficult.

I agree with you on this one. Everyone is trying to explain the "situation" from their point of view what if it is just the dev having not enough manpower / wants to release the game ww with local translations ready ?

I seriously doubt it's launching with the PS4/3DS versions. I don't know if I'm going to wait for the Switch version.

I don't think it will "kill" but it will definitely take a huge bite out of the sales figures of the PS4/3DS versions considering a)It could be the same UE4 version as the PS4 and b)has the portability factor going for like the 3DS.

Besides, if they want all versions to sell well, they could very well space to catch the maximum amount of Day 1 buyers, and then incentivize the Switch versions with extra features they couldn't find anywhere.

They're already doing something similar with I Am Setsuna.

In some cases, maybe. In others, I think it's more just hesitance to get on board with new platforms. PS4 didn't exactly launch with an impressive Japanese third-party lineup, either.

They announced development two years ago.

Yes, they were, on pc, using UE4, prepare to port on PS4 and something something powerful current generation console code name NX.

And then they got Switch dev kit and realize its spec.

Horii "wtf is this shit?"
Miyake "Saitoooooooooooo!"

Base on untrue story.

It must take some super rose colored glasses for people to think the Switch version is being delayed because it's going to include all three versions of the game.

There's proof that happened with Nier? Or just tales from your ass?

I think that the 3DS is getting a completely different version of the game that Sony doesn't care much about.

I think Sony does care. How can they not?

When there is a possibility that the game will sell more on 3ds than PS4(which most likely would happen).

Tales from your ass then. I figured.

You'd think that instead of coming up with ridiculous conspiracy theories, you'd simply look at all the other times Square Enix released a game on PC slightly late and with little fanfare (like Dragon Quest Heroes). But no, it has to be a conspiracy.
