So there's a story going around on Japanese blogs (
here's Hachima Kikou's), which I'm reluctant to post on Gematsu because I can't verify it, but I figured I'd share it here.
Before that, to recap, Square Enix PR told WSJ: "Support is planned, but there is nothing to announce today. We cannot say today whether the release date is the same as or different than the PlayStation 4 and 3DS versions."
OK, so a 2ch user apparently e-mailed Square Enix's Japanese support e-mail (
which you can do here) asking about the Switch version. This was the response (
posted in the form of a smartphone Gmail screenshot): "Nintendo Switch support for Dragon Quest XI is currently planned, but July 29 is the release date for two platforms, PlayStation 4 and 3DS. For more information regarding the Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI, please wait for further news after July 29."
This would imply that the Switch version will be released after July 29, which kind of contradicts Square Enix PR's statement that they can't say whether or not it will be released on the same day as other versions.
Things to note: the user could be making this up (images like these aren't hard to fabricate), and I feel like game company support e-mails are generally never super accurate about matters outside the realm of public knowledge such as this.
Anyways, I sent out an e-mail just now to Square Enix's media relations, so if I get anything back (probably not soon if I do since it's the weekend), I'll let ya'll know.
Has Square at least mentioned which of the three visual styles the Switch version will adopt?
Nope. I want to know as well. I'll be buying both the PS4 and 3DS versions, but if the Switch version has a different visual style, I'll pick that up as well. I won't be buying it if it's the same Unreal Engine 4 version as PlayStation 4, but if it's the 3DS version in HD, I'll get the Switch version instead of the 3DS version.
