Star Trek into Darkness |OT| Not very tired at all

Indeed. If you're a Trekkie, some of the dialogue will make you smile too.

But...I hope the third film lives up to the potential ideas we assumed would occur: a truly different timeline.

I've been a Trek fan since I was a child, and I quite enjoyed ST09 (it may not have the more measured pacing of the Trek shows I love so dearly, but it's a fuckload better than the TNG movies).

Looking forward to Into Darkness. Love me some Cumberbatch, Star Trek, and Abrams.

Does that make me the target audience?

I've always liked Ancient warships as well. I can't figure out why!

I think we can all agree that the Goa'uld motherships are lame.

How can it be sleek and sexy if it's fat? And 90s Trek design has aged fantastically.
Uniforms and ship design in terms of sexiness and sleekness? No way. Not a chance.

Compare TOS & 09 ship and costumes:

I think the ENT E design is cool but it isn't sleek or sexy, traits that used to define Trek and thankfully came back. The soul of classic Trek felt really missing during those years.

Really, Cheebs? "Thankfully came back"? First off, there's nothing sexy about the original Enterprise ship design from the '60s. Secondly, if women being sexualized in a military, with short skirts and dresses, in a universe where humanity has supposedly evolved to a higher point, is a good thing...I'm sorry, that's not really evolution. It's actually pretty off-putting.

If it is off-putting and not a good thing then why did it come back in the franchise? To the public it is a central element of what makes Star Trek, well Star Trek.

To the non-Trekkie skirts and gogo boots is one of the first things one thinks of when they think of Star Trek. It's part of what makes Trek Trek.

And don't act like modern trek didn't sexualize their females or put them in skimpy outfits. They did, they just were awful at it in terms of cool memorable styles:

It's just the outfits were awful dated. They have nothing on this in terms of style and iconic uniform design:

I've actually never been there, so I have no idea what it's like. I did go to a Lewis & Clark documentary at the Omaha zoo IMAX theater many years ago, but that's my only IMAX experience. Do you think it would be worth the hassle of going there over just seeing Star Trek in Ames?

This is a really tough question to answer. It's definitely a great experience, especially with the vistas that Abrams likes to showcase. If you're looking to enjoy the movie at a decent price, I'd just stick to the Ames theater. But if there was one movie that I would recommend seeing, it is easily Star Trek. Seeing this on IMAX was definitely a treat.

Alternatively, I could tell you how it is after I go on the 19th.

Deanna Troi, man.

Good god fashion in the 80s and 90s was terrible.

Yep. Trek always sexualized their females and always will. It is just 80's and 90's fashion was so awful it aged horribly compared to the awesome 60's uniforms.

90's trek had so many awful ideas of what sexy skimpy uniforms look like compared to TOS:

The biggest problem with the Excelsior design is that stupid fat neck. It makes the ship look dumb from lower viewpoints. The E has the same problem with bad design connecting the saucer to the secondary hull, but at least it looks great from above.

All the best Enterprise designs look great from multiple angles, and have slim, sexy necks.

Also, the Voyager design looks worse every time I see it. I still don't understand the purpose of moving nacelles.

Because Abrams and crew don't know how to treat their female characters besides making them love interests or being there to "sex up" the film. What sense is there to make your females wear short skirts and dresses in the military? It looks ridiculous, and there's a reason they dropped it from the movies. Why aren't the men walking around with their shirts off?

I'm not. It looks stupid there too, but all the characters you've posted aren't in a military, and those one-piece suits are better than a short skirt or a dress.

Enterprise E looks great from all angles.

I dunno. I think the Galaxy is pretty ass these days. And the Ambassador is the laziest ship design ever.

Well the Ambassador design isn't very good. I said that all the best ones have skinny necks, not that all Enterprises with skinny necks are good.

The Galaxy is admittedly goofy in many ways, but it gets a lot of brownie points from the amazing deflector dish design, and the softer, less militaristic curves compared to previous Enterprises fit the tone of TNG perfectly(which is why it made sense to ditch if for the extremely violent TNG movies).

For me it's A>Original>B>E>D>C

TMP Enterprise Refit is my favorite, 1701-A is second to that. After years of discomfort at the horrendous proportions of the D I have come to accept it. Still prefer it over the derivative C. And there's no need to mention the hideous Voyager or J.

Oh and I'd say ST09 would go between B and E. It gets points for originality and suits his Trek.

I like how later in the series her outfits became an issue and she started wearing the normal starfleet uniform

tng's season 3 onwards starfleet uniforms are probably my favorite. very elegant looking, while avoiding looking too militaristic like the uniform used in TWOK or mid DS9.

Enterprise E looks great from all angles.

Sorry but it looks like a stupid mushroom from this angle:

ibd1eG3ZkPnSoB.jpg

And that's bad, because this is pretty much the defining angle for Enterprises. Like I said, it looks great from above, and it's more appropriate for the violent TNG movies than the D, but the weird no-neck fused saucer/hull is a black mark on it.

That doesn't look like a mushroom at all. It's far more sleek and looks sturdier than the original Enterprise, the A, or the one in the Abramsverse. And that's not its worst angle. It's this:

But then again, no ship really looks good from the front.

Yep. The NCC-1701-A is easily the best Enterprise design. Easily.

Agreed, I have always loved the shape of the Enterprise, it was a truly inspired design.

However I have to confess this new Enterprise really rubs me the wrong way. I think it is primarily the nacelles I hate. The big bulbous and bulky nacelles make the Enterprise look like a fisher price toy.

Well, a fused design certainly looks sturdier, but sturdiness has never really been part of the Enterprise aesthetics. If it was it'd just be a compact oblong ship instead of one with multiple hulls connected by narrow ones.

But then again, no ship really looks good from the front.

A symmetrical front view is just weird. The D is probably the best one for that angle.

They certainly have nothing on the perfection that is the A/refit nacelles.

That's just beautiful.

Also, saucer separation!

A pitifully underused feature.

Just wait till the Millenium Falcon passes through one of the Sheen waterfalls of Naboo and comes out the other side sparkling clean and white.

To me the Soveriegn Class is easily the sexiest canon ship in Star Trek, it is a shame we never got it in a series. I wish they hadn't used the naff looking models in the films though, moving back and forth from sexy CG to iffy model is really quite off putting.

Never been a fan of Trek ships.

Aww yiss.

The Daedalus class ships were pretty great looking, it was one of the nicer things about Stargate, their spaceships looked far more what I would expect ours to in the future than what we see in Star Trek, at least on the outside. I don't know what they were thinking with the Prometheus class in Stargate though, looked like hot ass, ST Prometheus > SG Prometheus easily.

I would like to put forward the case that the D looks fucking awesome from the front.

USS_Enterprise-D,_These_Are_the_Voyages.jpg

And just about every other angle.

The D looks fucking awesome from every angle. It was such an incredibly adventurous design with crazy shapes and colours but somehow works magically.

And did someone say the E wasn't sleek and sexy? That's crazy talk right there

D>A>E>B>C> Archer's upside down Akira class

Some days though, I think the Defiant is better than all of them.

BC-303 Prometheus is absolutely a bad design. Although the 302s are cool fighter things, and the Daedalus class is amazing. Some of the Asgard ships look pretty sweet although they're a big departure from the very grounded, industrial design of the Daedalus.

It always seemed to me that the Prometheus was a product of a low CG budget made to be as easy to render as possible.
