What was the tone for Giacchino's score? The trailers make it seem like a dark movie, but the few clips of the score I've heard have been just as upbeat and fast paced as the first one.

A funny anecdote: this was a blind special screening that people had to pay for. My theatre marketed it as part of the 'Chicks at the Flix' campaign. It was either going to be an early screening of Trek or an early screening of Gatsby. 95% of the cinema were women expecting Gatbsy and when it became apparent that it was Trek you heard a mix of laughs/groans from all the women in the audience, while the odd 'YES!' from some of the maybe fifteen guys in the theatre rang out. Hilarious stuff.
Like I said, I can see this film HUGELY pissing off longtime Trek fans. I have judged this film as a sequel to the first film and nothing more. I do agree that there are some cheap contrivances, but could easily forgive them because I was enjoying the film and the characters so much.
Just got back. This will be spoiler-free. I won't talk about anything at all relating to the story because I went into this movie pretty much completely dark.
I have to say that I'm pretty fucking disappointed.. in myself for not being hyped up nearly as much as should have been prior to this movie.
It was fucking great. It was such a great sequel that I'm still buzzing on it right now. I should say that I was a big fan of Abrams' first Trek film and that if you liked that, you will love this. If you hated Trek 09, then you will find plenty of things to nitpick in this film. It is a sequel to that movie in every way.
...
This was a great sequel. A solid 9/10 popcorn flick and I'm glad I'm seeing it again on Thursday.
Depends on what bores you. 300 is dull because it's got minimal substance. With Watchmen people find it boring because it has a long runtime. The story is great and a lot of the characters are too. It's got some rough edges and questionable decisiosn but it's a movie I'd recommend seeing, even though there's a real chance you won't like it.
All the reviews seem to hint this is a stop gap sequel with nothing extraordinary . Thats not something i wanted from JJ. If you assume he wont be back for number 3 i wanted him to go out with a bang
The only disappointing thing so far is they've toned down the aliens, basically there are none from the looks of it. I'd have liked monsters and alien planets, but it seems they've made it way more human,

There's no real problem with doing a human centered story, although I can understand the frustration when you're getting a movie every 3 years instead of an episode every week.

To be honest I think they've only done the film that way so they can appeal to the mass market. I still believe the movie will be great but more Bourne in space then Star Trek from the looks of it.

Yes, agreed 100%. I liked Watchmen in the theater, but I own the director's cut at home and it improved the movie quite a bit. The director's cut of Watchmen is one of my favorite super hero movies ever, I like it even more than Avengers. And I loved Avengers.

It was everything a blockbuster popcorn flick should be. It was rousing, thrilling and there were a lot of laughs throughout. But more than anything, it cemented that JJ Abrams is now one of the few directors in Hollywood who know how to put $200m (Edit: Just checked it was only $185) up on screen and let you see every dollar. Watch out, I'm about to talk about effects for a sec. This film feels SO much larger in scope and polish than the first film and it all looks absolutely fucking phenomenal. This is the sort of experience we should expect from budgets like that. Not shit like The Avengers - which looks downright shitty in comparison, especially for the amount of money that went into that.
I will say that the converted 3D is worthless, which is to be expected after Abrams made it clear it was forced on him. Though there are one or two shots that put the scale of some things into perspective that were rather nice. But otherwise I wouldn't bother unless it's the only way you can see this film on a big screen. Because you do need to see this film on a big screen.
The same kind of conveniences/plot contrivances that nitpickers had with the first film exist here, so those people will have a field day. But if you were able to overlook those in the first film and just go with it, you'll enjoy the fuck out of this. It's nothing like Prometheus' problems despite Lindelof's presence. You know this because - like Trek 09, the character work all feels very strong and organic. I was very much invested in what was going on and rooting for the Enterprise crew to kick ass. This is that kind of fist-pumping experience.
Everybody was great in the film. Even Alice Eve. I will say that some of the minor crew who got a little more due in the first film have been somewhat brushed to the side in this film, but nobody gets ignored. It all still feels like a group effort.
Giacchino is still Giacchino - which is to say that the score was everything it ought to have been and I will be purchasing it asap. Would put it on par or maybe slightly above the first Trek's score, though will have to give it a re-listen first before I decide.
I'm not giving away any of the story, but will put tags on this for those super-sensitive folk that might construe this next sentence as a maybe-possible-impressions-leading-to-ideas-in-my-head spoiler:
I can see a lot of old school trekkies being PISSED in this film.
This is Abrams' strongest film as a director. He seems to have developed a much stronger visual language than any of his previous films indicated. This was actually the first film where I could actually see him as somebody who studies Spielberg's craft - if only because that very specific means through which Spielberg communicates information to the audience about a character or place visually is something JJ now seems to be consciously aware of.

More than anything, this just re-confirmed to me that I couldn't be happier that Episode VII is in this dude's hands.

I hate that term. It's not 'forget about the contrivances' or 'dont think and you won't notice them', it's a case of being able to forgive them in lieu of all that the film does right. But yes, I can guarantee that you will almost definitely hate it.
That sucks. It's a fun little app but easy to game for points. I've been utilizing a lot of google searches for photos. The strange ones are when I got points for not even being in a location... but hey, I won't turn down free points.
Also, I know they push for hulu on the app to records sound snippets of certain Star Trek eps. but I just used Netflix and got my points. Same with recording sounds from ST09, I just found yt clips and recorded.
Apparently this opens next Wednesday in IMAX... which, having never seen a movie in IMAX, would probably be quite the experience. Hmm. I'll have to think on it.
Edit: When is this supposed to be released in the US? The 16th or 17th?

Yeah, I saw ST09 in 3D IMAX but I'm actually watching STID in 3D IMAX solely because 1) I see it on Wednesday the 15th, 2) the showing's at 8pm. Selfish, but I don't need to watch this movie at midnight when I don't have to. Also, I get the poster they're giving out so works for me.
