I am watching through TOS and am on about episode 60. I still find it hilarious that a red shirted no name security dude always dies. I mean its a death sentence! Hilarious.

And now you get one of the great in-jokes of the 2009 star trek movie when Kirk, Sulu, and Ensign Olson skydive to the platform.

Been watching TNG again, on season's 5 finale, and I have to say, season 3 was definitely my favorite. Season 4 and 5 were good, but they had some stinkers in there

Gowron was way too goofy. Eyes always looking like they're about to pop out of his head.

Hey now don't hate on Gowron. The guy lasted from early on in TNG all the way until the end of DS9! Always love episodes that feature him.

Also, am I the only person that really likes Lower Decks? Great episode that makes you look at the senior staff through the eyes of young ensigns. Made me appreciate them even more.

I really liked Lower Decks. Seeing how things run from the PoV of the normal guys was really neat. Plus it continued elements from 'The First Duty', which I liked.

It is actually sort of entertaining. His emotional outbursts are making the experience of watching these episodes a lot more fun for me.

I recently watched all of TNG in order when it played on KTLA. I hadn't seen a lot of the early episodes since they first aired.

The first season is interesting. A lot of it is awful, but if you know the rest of the series a lot of it is strangely entertaining. Like Picard being an asshole and also them trying to play up his hatred of kids. It's really obvious they latched onto that as one of the 5 or so bullet points that originally defined him.

I also found myself enjoying some episodes that I remembered as terrible, like the one with the water-borne lust disease that was basically a remake of a TOS episode. The interaction between Crusher and Picard in that episode is hilarious.

Is TNG worth watching for someone who prefers serialized drama? I'm a huge sci-fi fan too. I've been looking forward to DS9 getting on Netflix.

If you like Sci Fi, then go for it (same with TOS), just don't expect long story arcs. they're all pretty much self contained with a few arcs that might take place over just a few episodes across several seasons.

TNG has a lot of loose ties between episodes. Like guys who show up in one episode show up again in episodes down the road. (Tomalak for example) The show definitely rewards you for having watched previous episodes.

the only Treks with long serialized arcs are the later seasons of DS9 and the third season of Enterprise. (The fourth season has several three episode arcs as well).

That episode made every woman on board the Enterprise horny.

It's been so long now but I remember a TNG episode where the crew became old, they eventually figured ut how to use the transporter to "beam" them back with their proper young DNA

...effectively this would end aging as it is known as every one could save their ideal age and just keep beaming back to it.

So unrealistic :p

Hair moving from the top of your head to the bottom doesn't count as growth.

The fact you say Sisko didn't grow as a character tells me you weren't paying attention.

Sisko evolved in the very first episode. He hadn't let go of his wife, he blamed picard for every bad thing that had happened to him. At the end he lets go of his past and starts looking at his future. He accepts Picard as his superior officer and not as the man who killed his wife. In one episode he already evolved his character.

Halfway through season 3 of TNG now. It's fun to see all the cameos of actors/actresses you recognize playing random bridge crew.

LOL at the exercise scene of Troi and Dr. Crusher in the The Price.

Paper or plastic?
Season 3 [TNG] also. I like how they retconned
Tasha's death. "Sorry for that shitty and senseless death, let's try that one more time.

Remember that episode where they found out Warp Drives destroy subspace over time? Then they all agreed never to go past Warp 6 because it would speed up the destruction?

Then how they retconned that away by never mentioning it again and always going at Warp 9+

I hate to further contribute to the derailing of this thread from its original mission, but I just wanted to profess my love for an underrated TNG episode not on the watching list: The Most Toys. Great evil performance by Saul Rubinek (a character actor that, if you don't know by name, you probably know by the face). And it adds a texture of ambiguity to Data's character that is awesome and truly chilling.

I cant speak for DS9, but I noticed that they mostly obeyed that unless it was an emergency.

Definitely, an excellent episode.

Watch a few eps and find out, but you will probably want to wait for DS9

They designed a new warp core which prevented the damage from occurring.

An episode of the first season of TNG that I am especially fond of right now, is the one where Picard gets possessed by an entity near some sort of space cloud. They become this combined consciousness, and Picard teleports himself into the space cloud so that they can travel the universe together as some super bipolar being. But it does not take, and they are separated, but Picards energy remains stuck out there in space so the Enterprise has to get close to the cloud so that he can make his way back. And then Picards energy gets sucked into the electrical system of the Enterprise, and the crew is able to reconstruct him in the teleporter. Not to mention that he hailed the Enterprise to his seperation through some sort of ASCII display of the letter P on one of their sophisticated Lite Brite systems. That was some amazing stuff going on there.

Anyway I am 16 episodes in, and having a lot of fun with it. I only recall 4 episodes so far from the past so a lot of it is new, and I never really watched the series in order so watching it evolve is interesting. There seems to be a lot of intentional humor which is not something I remember from the series at all. A ton of unintentional as well, but I like both types.

That's what I assume they could say but did they ever actually say it?

I thought they said it in Voyager (which explains why Voyager had the weird nacelle pylons that went up and down).

The designers publicly stated that was the idea behind them and were going to include it n Voyager's cancelled tech manual.

For anyone with the TV Channel Epix, they are premiering William Shatner's "The Captains" documentary tonight, where Shatner sits down to interview Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula, and Chris Pine (with insights from other Trek actors from all series).

Trekmovie.com has a nice review up. Saying while disjointed it's a good watch for Trekkies.
http://trekmovie.com/2011/07/22/review-william-shatners-the-captains/

Like the actors themselves, the chat segments are very different. Sir Patrick Stewart is very thoughtful and reflective, Kate Mulgrew speaks more emotionally and with humor, Scott Bakula provides a mix of being analytical with joviality (and singing), Chris Pine is very respectful and reverential, and Avery Brooks is just kind of out there.

TNG is certainly not serialized, but you will find that most of the episodes on this greatest hits watch list involve some character's story arc, which really brings out the best in the series' writers.

For example, "Q-Who?", "Best of Both Worlds 1&2", "I, Borg" and "Descent 1&2" all tell the Borg story from beginning to end. There are similar arcs for Data & Lore, Worf, Q, Ensign Ro, etc.

Another +1 for Tapestry. It is one of the few episodes that I hadn't seen before and it is completely awesome. Made me think about my own life which is a mark of great storytelling.

We will all understand if you skip 'threshold', an episode so bad it has been exiled from cannon in every possible way.

I watched The Captains last night. It's not exactly what this thread is about, but I definitely recommend seeing it.

I'm nearing the end of Season 5 myself (I watched Think Tank last night). It's not bad, but the range of characters makes some episodes much worse. Janeway, Seven, Tuvok, and the Doctor are all great, but goddamn the rest of them are painful at times. The episodes themselves are a mix, usually at least decent.

Can't stand Janeway, the other characters you listed are somewhat interesting, but Janeway is an awful captain whose character changes randomly in her morals and convictions. And yea fuck the rest of the cast.
