Heh, I am just finishing up TNG through Netflix through the discs. On season 7, disc 3. Might just do a marathon this weekend to finish the series up!

I think I'll do Voyager next. Never knew DS9 and Voyager had roughly the same amount of eps as TNG.

Depressing more like. TOS is the main reason I was excited by this.

Speaking of which, is it the remastered series with the new special effects?

Rewatching Season 2 of TNG and Dr. Pulaski is on the ship now. Worst character ever. I remember watching when it first happened and being pissed that Crusher was gone.

I liked Pulaski more than Crusher. Not that Pulaski was great, but she was pretty much just a female Bones, and I'm OK with that. Crusher was just annoying.

Nah, Pulaski is a better character than Crusher. Muldaur is a far, far superior actress, too. Which is probably the main thing with me.

I used to hate Pulaski too until I marathoned the whole show, and got to see the actual contrast between the two characters. Give me grumpy cynical luddite over single mother romantic interest any day of the week.

Oh, one other question. The movies all take place this way:

TOS>Star Trek 1-6>TNG in its entirety>The rest of the movies

right?
Yep!

At least I think so. It's Star Trek VI -> TNG -> Generations.

Awesome!

Can't wait til they get season 1 posted, I imagine it will be done sometime today.

Yeah if season 1 is not up by tomorrow, I'll probably go ahead and swap TOS and TNG, and we'll just start with TNG.

Wow!

My newborn son and I are going to watch every single one of these episodes over the next four months. What great timing!

Can we trade all of Voyager and Enterprise for season 1 of TOS and DS9 early?

Or even just Season 1 of TOS?

Or even half of Season 1?

Or the pilot?

Or the animated series?

Or the really bad comics from the 90s?

Or...okay, I hate Enterprise and Voyager, okay?

DrForester said:

That pic is definitely a contender, but it doesn't have most of the crew mingling with NASA...and everyone wearing 70s suits.

Why, God, can't we make another Star Trek TV series?

I hate living in a world where there isn't at least one GOOD ST series on the air. We were so fucking spoiled in the early 90s.

Im not sure CBS really knows what to do with the license. This is their idea of merchandising.

They are probably way too afraid to invest in what it would cost to make a new show

Hey, same here (even though he's still a couple more weeks away... maybe)! Congrats!

Look, if they can get kids interested again...which somehow I doubt it will ever reach the peak of the 60s, then 80s/early 90s popularity...then that's okay.

ocadman said:
It's ok. Let it out.

I watched the first...four episodes I think? I liked the twist of the fourth or fifth episode, with the cloned ship taking over for the "real" ship, blah blah...

Okay, I can't remember anything, I just realized I didn't like it and went back to sending UPN letters to put DS9 on.

after reading the series summaries, i still don't quite get what the series are about. is it similar to or better than star wars? i remember as i kid i used to switched to a different channel everytime i see it on. the only episode i remembered sticking from start ot the end was the one with "The Rock" in it. just cause i was really into wrestling.

Okay, I'm able to stream the first TOS season now. Hell yes.

And it begins!

Elim Garak > Star Wars

wow, just finished watching The Cage. That was great. Captain Pike was awesome, he would've been a fine lead, I think. And I liked "Number 1" as well. That was really good.

Do the Talosians ever appear again? I guess I can look it up.

I am looking foward to watch DS9, don't think I ever watched it. Wasn't there some arc in one of the seasons, of a huge war and DS9 was destroyed or something.

And I think "Year of hell" Part 1 & 2 are good episodes in voyager...even if they used time travel (which sometimes can be a major cop-out).

Awesome I don't have to change anything.

NOTE TO VIEWERS:

Feel Free to watch the two parter "The Menagerie" this week as well. It's a lot of footage from "The Cage" but combines a story with Kirk and Spock. It's pretty good. I am goign to leave them both on for this week, but it is a bit of a rehash if you watch all of "The Cage"

So I'm like "who's the hot blonde?" in Where No Man Has Gone Before. I wikied Andrea Domm:

Her first job was playing Yeoman Smith in "Where No Man Has Gone Before", the second pilot for Star Trek: The Original Series. Allegedly, Gene Roddenberry hired her so he could "score with her", but Dromm insists that she had "no problems" with the legendary ladies' man.[2]

OH WOW, the other blonde is Hot Lips from MASH, aka the Professor that Rodney hooks up with in Back To School!?

Star Trek is very different than Star Wars. Best way to think of it is Star Wars is Fantasy, Star Trek is fiction. Star Trek (usually) tends to take a much more grounded "realistic" approach. To things. It's about Humans, not people in a galaxy far far away.

As a note that episode with "The Rock" was from Voyager,m when UPN got rights to show wrestling. if not for "Threshold" it would likely be the episode on the last week for the worst episodes. But "Threshold" wins the Voyager bad-episode contest by a huge margin.

The Doctor from "No Man Has Gone Before" reminds me of the chain smoking doctor from the Ronald Moore Battlestar Galactica.

Agreed.

I feel like Star Wars is fantasy that happens to feature lasers and starships.

Star Trek is a sci-fi homage to the "gentleman captain" era of British exploration (1600s - 1800s) such as Horatio Hornblower (which was an inspiration).

Or?

Star Wars is LOTR in space.
Star Trek is Master and Commander in space.

yeah, it's amazing how dead the franchise is, even with a successful reboot in 2009. Paramount cares more about Transformers, which is fine, but the 2009 star trek movie was the highest grossing film in the franchise's history. Even so, it's looking like the sequel won't be out until summer 2013.

Just watched an episode of voyager I remembering loving when I was younger, called "The Killing Game".

yeah, it isn't that great, WWII and Star Trek just don't mix well.

There is only one thing people need to know to sum up voyager, janeway locks herself in her room and refuses to come out because she cant see the stars in her window for a week.

Nah, ST needs a good long rest, just like Stargate. I do want to see a new Space Opera tv series, however. In the 00's we had Trek, Andromeda, nBSG and Stargate off the top of my head. Then when SGU ended, nothing.

So the original series has the remastered effects and is in HD, but is not in widescreen like the blu ray sets are. If they are going to have the remastered ones, at least show them in widescreen, or give me the option for original version or remaster.

The original series is not in widescreen. Not even in the redone bluray set.

I watched the first two episodes of TNG. The Whatever at Farpoint was alright, nothing amazing but I sat through all 90 minutes of it, so that says something.

The second episode was straight-up retarded. First off, stars don't explode and then cease to exist in a matter of seconds like that. They also don't send giant ghost rocks hurdling through space. I thought Star Trek was supposed to be a bit more grounded in actual astronomy and physics than say, Buck Rogers? Anyway, the plot was very TOS-ish, involving everyone on board becoming drunk (the explanation for this was the least awful thing in this episode, actually) and then that stupid fucking kid somehow taking over the entire ship. How is it possible to take command of a ship and lockout the bridge from one terminal in engineering? Maybe I don't understand Star Trek, maybe there is some backstory about how the Enterprise was designed by total fucking morons that I missed. I'm going to chalk details like that up to the shitty writing in this episode and assume nonsense like that isn't canon, otherwise every bad guy who gets on board the Enterprise is going to be making a mad dash for this magic terminal in engineering.

Anyway, I'm wondering how to proceed. Does this series ever get consistently good? And what kind of "good" are we talking about? When do the campy TOS leftovers like that second episode disappear? I actually like episodic stuff so I'm not just interested in the more serialized plot arcs. What I'm basically asking is, what episodes from the early seasons should I watch and at what point could I start watching every episode in order without having to put up with too much crap? I have a lot of free time over the next two weeks so I'd like to jump ahead of the rewatch schedule, I just want some guideposts to an optimized viewing experience.
