I watched the first two episodes of TNG. The Whatever at Farpoint was alright, nothing amazing but I sat through all 90 minutes of it, so that says something.

The second episode was straight-up retarded. First off, stars don't explode and then cease to exist in a matter of seconds like that. They also don't send giant ghost rocks hurdling through space. I thought Star Trek was supposed to be a bit more grounded in actual astronomy and physics than say, Buck Rogers? Anyway, the plot was very TOS-ish, involving everyone on board becoming drunk (the explanation for this was the least awful thing in this episode, actually) and then that stupid fucking kid somehow taking over the entire ship. How is it possible to take command of a ship and lockout the bridge from one terminal in engineering? Maybe I don't understand Star Trek, maybe there is some backstory about how the Enterprise was designed by total fucking morons that I missed. I'm going to chalk details like that up to the shitty writing in this episode and assume nonsense like that isn't canon, otherwise every bad guy who gets on board the Enterprise is going to be making a mad dash for this magic terminal in engineering.

Anyway, I'm wondering how to proceed. Does this series ever get consistently good? And what kind of "good" are we talking about? When do the campy TOS leftovers like that second episode disappear? I actually like episodic stuff so I'm not just interested in the more serialized plot arcs. What I'm basically asking is, what episodes from the early seasons should I watch and at what point could I start watching every episode in order without having to put up with too much crap? I have a lot of free time over the next two weeks so I'd like to jump ahead of the rewatch schedule, I just want some guideposts to an optimized viewing experience.

There's a reason there's not many episodes from season 1 and 2 on the TNG list on the watch list.

season 1 is terrible. Season 2 is mixed. The show gets great after that.

I have no clue what gave you that impression. It's every bit as bad other SciFi shows. The only real difference is they usually use the name of some real effect when explaining the nonsense technobabble. In later series you can play the quantum mechanics technobable drinking game.

The original series is not in widescreen. Not even in the redone bluray set.

I know the original broadcast wasn't, but I thought the blu was as well as when they broadcast the remasters. Or at least when they aired the remastered ones.

Aside from that, the quality on the stream is fantastic.

Dr Forester,

Get rid of "Crossover" and "The Collaborator" and put in "For the Cause," "For the Uniform" and "Blaze of Glory." Also, "Waltz" needs to there. I'd also add "Necessary Evil" as well.

I was wondering what happened to Dax01 and why I wasn't seeing him in here. Then I realized he just had a different avatar than last time I saw him.

So, I watched Amok Time and Where No Man Has Gone Before (after I decided to follow the schedule). Also, before I saw you added The Cage.

Amok Time was awesome - I've never enjoyed 50 minutes of an alien with pent up sperm before. WNMHGB is an episode I've wanted to see for a very long time since reading a comic book with Gary Mitchell in it back in the 90s. I didn't like it as much as AT - the character interactions were great, but it didn't feel as much like "Star Trek" I think.

Netflix won't let me access some of these episodes. The little spinner just spins and spins. You guys must be sucking down some bandwidth.

Just so you know, it's almost repetitive to watch "The Cage" and "The Menagerie" in the same week. I just did that to prevent editing after I added "The Menagerie" when it looked like "The Cage" might be a disk only episode.

"The Menagerie" is basically them using the footage from "The Cage" so it didn't go to waste (and production on new episodes was running behind) and tying it in with a Spock/Kirk story about the last Enterprise Captain. It a good episode, but again, repetitive.

I'd think Star Trek is one of the biggest things they've streamed before, and I'm sure other online communities are doing big watch events like us.

Right and that's kind of why I didn't want to watch The Cage. Maybe later if I'm bored, but I like the traditional TOS cast a lot and while it would be fun to see where they're coming from, I get a dose of Pike and "number 1" from The Menagerie.

Man, I love TOS so much. I've seen episodes here and there before, but it's going to be great to finally go through them all in order. And I can't wait for TNG and DS9.

I've liked all of the episodes thus far. Currently on ep. 6 "The Enemy Within". Is it just me, or does evil Kirk have eyeliner on? :lol

Great idea!

I'll definitely try and participate, but me and my wife already started watching TOS earlier this year, so we may be a little ahead of you guys, but I'll try and participate in the discussions of the current episodes as you all watch them, and hopefully be able to watch them in sync with you all at some point.

We've been waiting for Star Trek to get on instant watch for a while now (we had been just renting the DVDs in the mean time), so I'm pumped about rewatching them (and I haven't seen all of TOS or TNG anyway).

Basically it's when Riker grows a beard.

Uh, don't actually read click the Live Action TV section on that link, there are spoilers.

Thanks OP - totally wouldn't have noticed these shows being added to netflix otherwise.

And the original series (and enterprise) being in HD? Fan-fucking-tastic!

Yeah that's awesome.

Enterprise was in HD from the jump, but TOS had a (fantastic) remastering done.

What is the best place to start? I have watched like 5 star trek episodes my entire life. The original series looks boring though.

I was suprised that I actually recognized most of the episodes in Season 1 for TNG....though I had to get used to the different roles, like Geordi at helm, Worf not security officer, and Tasha is pretty damn hot.

Both TNG and DS9 bot much better once more beard was used. This is another reason for voyagers failure, lack of beard.

DrForester's choices are pretty excellent as a whole, but I think the omission of the S1 TNG "Conspiracy" arc (so... "Coming of Age" and "Conspiracy", I guess) is unfortunate. Conspiracy is a very strange episode and it's tonally unlike anything else in TNG, definitely worth a watch.

Premise was a bit silly though, and they ultimately set up a future story arc that never happened, because they went a different direction with their plan. I'll add them though, that's why I left room.

I finished The Cage.

First of all, Fred Steiner passed away not too long ago, he was 88. He was a composer for TOS and TNG. He contributed more music to the series than any other. He also did music for The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke, and Lost in Space, and did the music for Spielberg's The Color Purple, the only Spielberg film without John Williams.

Second of all, PIKE!!!!!!!!

292px-Christopher_Pike%2C_The_Cage.jpg

Loved him in J.J. Abram's Star Trek movie, and he was great in here. He's not as wild as Kirk, or as British as Picard. It was interesting to see him handle the situations of this episode, even if it's just to see how he reacts (he barely does).

Spock was also there, acting more like a human than an intentionally emotion-less alien. I like how they fanbase retconned this by saying this was before he accepted his Vulcan heritage, and how the new Star Trek movie included this in some way. It helped in making an obvious production development into something canon, which is what I like about Star Trek (and Star Wars) canon, always piecing things together.

Also, at one time, Spick waved his hands to show a new screen on the ship's monitor, just like with Kinect.

This was a very long episode, but the most interesting part of this episode for me are the great amounts of sets here.

Each planet looked more like a planet than other episodes of these shows, which are usually a desert tinted with a different color. Great production values, they even indulged themselves with all these outer space shots (especially where we zoom into the bridge from outer space, just like in the new Star Trek movie).

292px-Talosians_3.jpg

The aliens themselves were also fantastic. Their heads look scary by themselves, especially those veins. It looked like they hurt. I like how smart they acted, it gave off a sense that our protagonists were wholly outclassed by them.

It was a nice pilot with a nice story, if you can stand it's slow pace and length. I understand a lot of shows were like this back then, since TV was new, and the fact that you were watching a color TV show was entertainment enough. Pretty interesting for Trek fans though.

NEXT!

Season 1 of TNG isn't that bad, I just think they were trying too hard to mimic TOS. The whole season feels completely different to the other seasons and it wasn't until season 2 they finally started to find their own direction. Of course seasons 3-5 are about as good as trek gets.

I'd love to do this but I don't think my completionist OCD would allow me to skip around episodes like that. Especially not for TNG or Deep Space 9. I can't not watch all of those.

Watching TOS and TNG for the first time, super excited.

Starting with season one of TNG against my better judgement. Finished The Last Outpost last night.

It's great to see the Ferengi flail around like idiots and all, but man, it's a bit of a boring episode.

So I just finished "Where No Man Has Gone Before." It was pretty good. Gotta a few kicks out of the sweater uniforms and "neutralize the warp field."

The first season of TNG is legitimately horrible.
For the most part, yeah. I really had to muscle through it, but I will say there were some solid episodes in there such as Encounter at Farpoint and Datalore.

I just made it through Season 2, which I'd say is like Season 1+ and is basically twice as good. Can't wait to get into S3 and see the show improve even more.

People say that DS9's first couple of seasons aren't that great, but honestly even Season 1 of DS9 I enjoyed more than both the first two seasons of TNG. Then again, I feel in general that DS9's style as a show resonates with me better than anything else in the Trek universe.

Almost finished with S1 of TNG, which I had started to make my way through prior to the Netflix upload. I've watched Trek on and off for years, but don't think I've ever watched every single episode of any particular series, which I'm trying to do here. Having this available on streaming is fantastic.

My biggest gripe with S1 of TNG has been Wesley Crusher being stuffed into so many of the plots. I know it's kind of popular to hate on the character anyways, but I never knew how much focus was put on him early on. The ep that has Picard violating the Prime Directive to save him was pretty awful, and now having watched Coming of Age I think I've hit my max tolerance level for him.

I actually like what they end up doing with him when he goes off the show, but man oh man, naive boy genius Wes needs to go. The only thing I liked early on was that Picard was kind of mean to him starting off, but even that's over now.

On a side note, anyone here ever played the old Star Trek CCG that Decipher put out? I loved that game, and I probably know more about Star Trek series characters from that than I do from actually watching any of the shows.

I remember the CCG a bit. Never played it much, but man, that's a trip down memory lane.

Speaking of Star Trek games, Star Trek Online Deluxe Edition's on sale this week as part of the Steam Summer Sale. It's $10, I think. Might go on sale later this week. I'm thinking of jumping back in (a major update's supposed to be coming this week) in no small part thanks to all this, lol.

Well, that and I'm unsubscribed to DCUO as of the end of the month so I can afford it. :p

Just watched "Deja Q" again. I forgot what an awesome character he was.

Q was a mixed bag for me. With one exception
(The Finale)
, the problem was that the character got progressively more goofy for me, where in the first episode he came of as threatening.

Love the card game, got nearly every card from the first few sets. Think I stopped after the "Q Continuum" expansion, but a friend and I played it all the time. Hobby shop near us was clearing out the Alternate Universe set one time for $.25 a pack, so we bought three boxes (I bought 1, he bought 2). Friend was very angry when I got a Future Enterprise card in my set and he didn't. Ended up trading the card for that collectors tin of the first set with the silver boarder of every card.

Enterprise and Voyager are still not working on my PS3, while the other series work just fine. Is anyone else having the same problem?

I am trying to search my memory to remember if Q showed up in other series... like DS9 or Voyager

please reply with a spoiler tag if you need to... I don't mind I've seen this shows before but my memory is bad
