two more questions, this time about tng casting:
Why did tasha yar character leave the show?
Why did dr. crusher leave for season 2 then come back?

Check the end of Season 3. There are TWO other The Cages there.

I would also like to know the difference between the three. One is extended (the last one).

Ah, thanks!! I think I'm going to watch TOS with my boyfriend, then do some selected TNG episodes (the best episodes, with all the major minor archs, and obviously the pilot just so the series finale has the necessary resonance - one can't watch the finale without suffering through the pilot, IMO), and then have us both watch DS9 in its entirety. I never really got into DS9, but have gotten more into the serial shows as I've gotten older, so DS9 will probably be more interesting to me now.

Denise Crosby (Tasha) left the show because she felt she wasn't being given enough to do on the show (and probably your usual "I'd like to pursue a career in films" reason). Seeing as how the only thing I really remember her in after TNG is her rather bit part in the film "Deep Impact" it doesn't seem to have been a great career move. Still, it made way for Worf to become more prominent.

As for Dr. Crusher, I'm not sure anyone has really talked about the rationale for that to any great length. We do know that McFadden (Crusher) didn't ask to leave, so I'd assume the producers wanted to experiment with a different dynamic and maybe basically have a female McCoy for the show. You'll notice that Diana Muldaur (who plays Dr. Pulaski in S2) never appears as a regular cast member in the credits and is always a guest star. I've read that she requested that to be the case, so I'm not sure exactly what she was told about what was going to happen with the doctor character when she came on. For all we know McFadden had no idea she would be asked back to the show, but maybe Muldaur had been told this was a season-long "experiment" that may not pan out. Maybe someone else knows some obscure interview where this was all fleshed out, but that's about all I remember.

Denise Crosby (Tasha) thought her character was underdeveloped and not getting enough screen time. Her decision seems pretty poor in retrospect considering Worf had even less to do in season 1, yet became one of the most fleshed out characters in the franchise.

As for Crusher, iirc, the creators thought the doctor should be more like McCoy. Then fans responded negatively to the McCoy knockoff, so they brought Crusher back.

I was really glad that Tasha Yar left. It allowed Worf to shine, even though TNG didn't really do much with the character.

Why do people immediately go down when Spock touches them in the shoulder.

No need to spoiler this. It's called The Vulcan Nerve Pinch and was something Leonard Nimoy thought up himself. He thought Spock was too "noble" to just knock someone unconscious. As a side note, Nimoy also came up with the Vulcan Hand Salute.

The basics of it are that they apply pressure to neck nerve muscles, rendering the subject unconscious. It's something pretty much only used by Vulcans, thought a few non-Vulcans learn to use it throughout the Trek Franchise.

Well, "came up with" I guess is the wrong phrase. It's based on a Jewish gesture he learned as a child.

My dad used to watch TNG all the time but I was never interested in the series. So I watched the first 3 episodes of the original star trek tonight and I think I am sold on the series. In a strange way it kinda reminds me of twilight zone. Anywho, I am going to try to stick to the schedule and watch every episode.

The one at the top of season 1 is probably the same as the normal version that's disk only at the end of season 3. "The Cage" was not on the season 1 sets, but was instead on the season 3 sets. Netlfix likely put it at the front of season 1 to preserve continuity.

Well, this is absolutely horrible news for my productivity. Still, count me in for this watching.

I never watched much of TOS, so I'm interested to see what the featured selections are like. Can't wait for October and DS9 though!

Sorry I have not followed the daily watch... been watching all night up

DejaQ is on now

I have to agree with some of the posts about Q becoming a joke character

I still like him but he was best as threaten

I looked this up yesterday because I had forgotten...basically, she "Shelly Longed" it and made a terrible career decision. TNG was kinda struggling in season 1 and she bailed out. Ooops.

Gates left over some sort of contract issue, but a giant fan protest forced the producers to bring her back.

So says the trekpedias.

I didn't like Dr. Pulaski at all, so I was glad to see Dr. Crusher return. Pulaski was like nails on a chalk board for me. I was really surprised when I saw what happened to Tasha Yar.

why does Guinan upset Q so much?

Its like he fears Guinan
The Guinan shit made me laugh. In TNG they implied she had crazy space god powers on par with Q. But then they just forget that and her only distinguishing feature becomes her age.

yeah the first meeting she had her hands up and Q had his hands up, so they both looked like they were about to cast some powerful blast at each other.

second time he freaked out when he saw her come

anyway I'll keep watching - did Guinan ever go to DS9? damn dunno if I should just pay netflix more to get DS9 DVD sent by mail I don't think I want to wait that long to stream it

No, Whoopie was never in DS9.
She did do two of the movies (but not First Contact, oddly enough. She apparently was never asked).

I checked Memory Alpha and IMDB but didn't see any mention of Gary having written any Voyager episodes. Are you mistaken?

Another addition for the DS9 list: Past Prologue cause it introduces Garak, and it's a pretty good episode in its own right.

Done. Was room at front end of Ds9 lists so was an easy add.

I'm just watching them all, and I'm three episodes into ToS. Man, I loved The Cage and almost hated to see Pike and company go, but two episodes of Kirk and his buddies later, and I see that they're a lot more fun. I've always been familiar with the iconic faces of Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Sulu, but I didn't realize what a swaggering good ol' boys club their characters were. Especially Kirk, at this point I feel like he's just drank, fucked and punched his way through his career so far, and I expect him do so for three more seasons and however many movies.

Also, I always knew who Spock was, but I thought he was more of a fish-out-of-water, everything is taken literally type character (more like Data). But wow, in the first episodes, I see that I've got him all wrong, he's more of a ruthless hard ass than I ever thought. In The Cage, Pike and the girls were trapped on the planet, and Spock was ready to ditch them and book it out of there. Then, in Where No Man Has Gone Before, while Kirk and everyone else were trying to decide how to deal with Mitchell, Spock's solution is just to whack him, lol. Kirk is scratching his chin trying to decide what to do; Spock is literally loading up a plasma rifle. Spock doesn't fuck around!

Man Trap was good, too, although it was just a touch too similar a plot to The Cage, I thought.

On your last point - I've noticed a lot of the series so far in the beginning is: something gets on board the ship, sneaks around by manipulating the crew, then has a moral discussion with Kirk and Spock. I can see that from a budget perspective it's better to do more on board the ship than down on the surface. And I'm not hating, it's just very similar.

On to the first, this is the best crew ever. Everyone works well together. It's the best cast.

I'm on Charlie X right now.

Charlie just slapped Yeoman Rand's ass. I grinned.

"The Cage" was the rejected pilot for Star Trek. But they liked it enough to give Rodenberry another chance. Rodenberry had to change up the entire crew. He did want to keep Pike and Spock, but Hunter declined to return for the 2nd pilot. It was not aired until the 80's I think. They did however use the footage to make the season 1 episode "The Menagerie" so the footage was not totally wasted.

Trying to get my girlfriend into TNG. Watched parallels last night and she enjoyed it. Probably gonna watch some more. Im surprised going through the episode list the episodes I remember, especially since I havent seen many of them for years.

The scene between Picard and his brother in Family ranks amongst my favorite for TNG. It immediately follows the Borg encounter involving Locutus. They destroyed his psyche.

Alternatively, if you're into watching old men mud wrestle, you might also enjoy it.

Terrible episode.

The first half of the episode was a complete bore. No plot whatsoever. However, by the second half, things started to fall into place, and we got a really cool villain. It was fun seeing Spock gradually grab bigger guns, and you felt like the guy was really unstoppable.

800px-Kirk_fires_a_phaser_rifle_at_Mitchell.jpg

Which ruined the ending, because there is no way he could have been stopped like they did in the episode. A guy that powerful cannot simply be defeated by dropping a boulder on top of him, when previously he was shown to have powers of a God. They built up such a great power that they didn't know what they could write to fix it, so they didn't.

Anyway, the Star Trek restoration is pretty cool. Instead of making it look more modern, they used CGI to make new special effects that were just as limiting as the originals, except not as obviously fake. Very restrained and respectful, even when they could have easily done much more.

Yeah, a great moment. Stewart is such a brilliant actor. Goes from rage to laughter to anguish in that scene and it totally holds up.

OK, the first season of TNG is just painful. I love Picard but the plots for the shows .....oh boy.

I'd forgotten how little action actually transpires on that show.

Code of Honor is making me wince. Data brings up French as an obscure language, without remembering Picard's name. And then they get into an argument about it.

Also, for some reason this episode gives me Coming to America vibes.

I have always wondered at one point in the st universe that french got filled up with people with english accents. That episode (a great one) when picard goes back to his small town in france, they all have english accents.

I have a comment for the episodes for the week ending July 23.
The ending to City on the Edge Of Forever was amazing. I fully expected Kirk to let McCoy save the lady. I did not expect her to die at all.
Also because I have enjoyed Star Trek so much I am already on the week ending July 23. Should I go back and watch some of the episodes from the first season, or should I continue to watch the episodes on the list?

Like I said in the OP, if you enjoy it, watch it all. trek is good, even when it's not at it's best.

As for City on the Edge of Forever, the episode is widely regarded as the best episode of the entire franchise. It was just an amazing story.

No, he was played by William Campbell, who also plays Koloth, a familiar Klingon commander throughout the original series.
