Star Wars Rise of Skywalker...aged well?

I’m watching it for the first time right now...

The fact I was browsing gaf instead of paying attention to the movie is probably as strong a statement in itself as anything I could come up with.

I watched it for the first time a couple weeks back. It was aiight.

It looks good and has varied enviroments. The story is is just dumb at this point but what can you do about that after the two previous films? I've basically written off this sequel trilogy in my head cannon so I don't judge them as Star Wars films at this point - they are just corporate-made fan fiction.

One thing that annoyed me though was Abrams directing choices. I swear this film has about a billion "push-ins" with the camera pushing into someone's face, and there is lots of unnesscary movement with the camera to inject a false energy and momentum in the events.

I gave it a 5/10 (average) in the end. It was a just a decent spectacle, really.

I think it's the best of sequel trilogy. TLJ had weaker plot points (Holdo/Poe & Finn/Rose) which brought down the overall piece and TFA was just uninspired trash.

Very bad movie. I absolutely hated how they used the force as plot glue to patch the holes they needed to. Need to bring someone back to life? Da force. How can ghosts interact with the living world? Da force. Teleportation? Da force.

I was out when she lined up the dagger to match the wreckage and a little doodad popped out to literally point the way. It reminded me of the Goonies. I believe K.Kennedy was a producer. Is it possible she floated that dumb ass idea and they actually used it in this film? Boo!!

Just finished watching it.

I honestly enjoyed reading the (spot-on) spoilers more, a couple of months before release. That seems like a weird thing to say, that a Reddit post was more entertaining than a major Hollywood film with the full financial backing of the mightiest company in the industry, but...

The thing is, when this story was on the page, and I was imagining it all, the general concepts seemed really cool. In practice, what they put on the screen was remarkably less compelling.

That kind of tells me that Rise of Skywalker has a lot of good thoughts on how to make a fun Star Wars movie, but no ability (and perhaps time) to execute those concepts properly.

its just easier to imagine an amazing movie, harder to physically realize it. plus the leaks had about 2-3 movies worth of content, cut scenes, lots plotlines, etc. most of which would have never made the cut. if you go read all the screenplays for the OT you have about 9 movies worth of material. ROTJ would have ruled with Darth Vader's lava castle and the imperial city planet, but it just wasn't meant to be...

when they decided on a hard release date and a hard runtime, it limited the development & production process and well the storytelling capabilities. if this was 3 1/2 hours like some of the mid-2000 blockbusters, it might be have allowed for a less rushed experience. imagine spending 15 minutes on Mustafar exploring Sith ruins and stuff, maybe the Emperor's re-appearance would have had a bit more of a build up. something like that may have helped dull the "he comes out of nowhere" complaints.

A lot of that time was wasted trying to undo The Last Jedi, to its detriment. Hooray for shit franchise planning.

Star Wars generally is just kind of stupid and always has been. I know that's sacrilege or whatever, but none of the movies are all that amazing.

The original trilogy is a fun romp in space, with pew pew lasers and funny looking aliens, and a legitimately good crew of actors. The stories are mostly stupid but hey we all watched these films when we were kids and didn't take things so seriously.

And the prequels and the sequels are fun too, if you go in with the expectation that it'll be a fun romp in space, with pew pew lasers and funny looking aliens, and a less good crew of actors. They're just dumb space action movies.

So yeah, Rise of Skywalker is fine. They're all fine.
