a huge majority of people who seem to be getting into beta are from California (American beta)

Don't put too much weight into that, just so happens that California is the most populated state is all. =P

I'd guess they pull an equal number of participants from each pool of computer hardware, and then just randomly select people, if they're even that sophisitcated with it.

i dont think such charity exists in dna of the human soul.

There was one who let me play their FFXIV beta account. Dr Who or something similar. I'd do the same with another at some given point. Though the details I'd have to discuss in private.

They check for suspicious IP behavior, so that's not going to work regardless.

I should know this since this is EA/BioWare. :/ Hells bells.

Still waiting :( Maybe someone on GAF can speak to me about letting me use their account. Psh, yeah right :( :( :(
Yeah that's a violation of the NDA. Instant ban if they catch you.

Surely you can see where they're coming from.

Lately? I'm not even sure anymore. With all my previous MMO beta follows, this one has me with plenty of ? all over the place.

38GB seems pretty small for something this big.
I don't really see that perspective. WoW with every expansion is something like 24 GB. 40GB for a far from complete MMO is gigantic. Even Age of Conan was only something like ~26GB during beta.

It seems silly but MMOs need the laptop market, and a large file size really can hurt when an MMO is supposed to sit on your HDD all the time.

50GB Blu-ray. A game the size of TOR fully extracted couldnt fill one, even with hundreds of hours of voice.

I don't understand your point here. How do Blu-rays even come up in the conversation for a PC title?

i dont know.. its just impressive to me that a game of this size and with this amount of voice acting could fit on one-disc. i honestly thought it would be larger than 50GB fully extracted.

Does anyone know the pattern to the waves? Or is it just a guessing game? It seems that people have been getting staggered invites all week, so hmmm.

A bit of both. We know they're inviting more people at the end of June, so this could very well be the wave that's rolling out right now.

I do wonder though, is it alright to be giving info out like the game's size? Bioware apparently reads the board/this thread, so I wouldn't wanna see anyone get their beta rights revoked or anything.
They're not allowed to speak about anything other than confirming that they're in the beta. As long as it's not specific ingame content, then I think it's less of a priority for BioWare to strike down upon.

SWToR ain't getting released on the PS3 where developers have the luxury of not worrying about filesizes though, so I think that argument is very flawed. Point me to some non ps3 games that are over 38GB's.

i was just commenting that i thought the game would be larger than 38GB. EDIT BEGINS HERE: It wasnt an attack. It wasnt a criticism. i wasnt trying to make it sound like the game was lacking in content or whatever the fuck you think my ulterior motive was. Ffs.

Your post was much nicer before the stealth edit.

Anyway, I thought you were comparing the size of SWToR to the fact that some PS3 games have been known to fill up blu-ray's. Blu-rays are afterall still only relevant on the ps3, when we're talking about gaming.

No need to get all pissy about me missunderstanding your post.

It was more a stealth addition. i clarified this in my post so theres no confusion.

Got my invite today and went to install and noticed it takes 38 some GB. Holy crap.
I think that might be crossing the line into things you should not say, precisely because it leads people to jump to conclusions.

But since that jumping has already begun, I'd like to state for the record that the total size of the game on disk is currently 28GB. Some of the downloaded files are redundant and overwrite each other. This is because it basically downloads the original and then patches it all the way up to the current version.

on the flip side they will continue adding content esp textures and models as they are finished. So i would expect it to go up from the 28 gigs it is now

28GB is still pretty big. And before the friday update we need something to discuss about the game heh.
Also might need to note that the gamefiles might not be compressed yet.

The game is in beta. This is not what is going to go gold. They have plenty of time to compress things, eliminate ghost data, work out inefficiencies, etc.

The last patch actually made the size smaller.

it all depends. Alot of mmorpgs i've played increased in size going from beta to release .

I got an email from Bioware this morning, but it was just telling me my decades old NWN forum account might have been hacked.

Gutted. But for that one shining second I dared to dream...

I know the feeling. Looked at the sender on my phone's screen ( Bioware GM) and then it's a account leak email. Wasn't the best way to start a day I tell ya!

I wonder if they've thought about selling betaslots. I mean that would be genius way to get more funding. "Pay $5 to get into this phase of beta". Not only would they get testers but they would also get people to pay them to test the game for them.

bjaelke

I doubt they'll sell them separately, but we've discussed the possibilities of including a beta invite in the Origin pre-order. That way you'll indirectly pay for a beta spot, because EA controls the price.

Yaska

Yeah, preorder incentive. But was wondering about separately selling them as they would make more money that way.

Any guesses when the Friday Update goes live today?
