Staten Island Grand Jury Does Not Indict in Eric Garner Case

This will be my last post in this thread as it has made me heated but when will civilians have the right to use of force if their life is in immediate danger from police? It is sad if this guy fought back he STILL would have ended up dead.

If this gets worse (and no doubt it will) you will start seeing vigilante justice.

What do you think Mike Brown was trying to do? Randomly kill a cop? Guy was probably protecting himself.

People like to post pictures about cops being killed and nobody protest, but cop killers get killed or put in jail. You don't get away with that shit.

Meanwhile a cop can kill a black kid and get hundreds of thousands of dollars donated to them and a slap on the wrist.

50+ thugs reported standing around in Grand Central, but only 20 or so protestors. They even brought in the state police. I don't understand how this type of harassment is tolerated.

How utterly unsurprising.

To the surprise of no one.

Of course.

Dehumanizing cigarette selling.

Should be. I don't think a badge takes away someone's right to defend their own life. Unless a citizen is trying to kill a cop or someone else, a cop never has the right to kill you or put your life in danger.

It's insane that this isn't a given. But honestly, if someone threatens your life, you defend yourself. Basic survival instinct.

This would be a good passive protest. Wearing Orange Hunting jackets...
we'd still be gunned down for... *reasons America believes are true/thug*
but would make for a peaceful movement.

You would be mistaken.

Americans have been charged with murder for shooting cops that were performing no-knock raids on their homes in the middle of the night.

Caling everyone who doesn't follow the letter of the law a thug. Those cops in that msg board are so hypocritical.

I was saying it should be, not that it is.

The poster was saying "when will it be"...and I was just saying it should be on a very basic human rights level. And yeah, I've heard of people getting charged with murder for killing cops who tried to kill them (even if they were the wrong person). System is fucked.

I just got in an argument with a friend of a friend on FB (in a thread based on this same article) who insisted, in order, that

1) There was no chokehold (I responded with http://theocddiaries.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Eric-Garner.jpg photo from this thread)
2) Garner died of an asthma/heart attack (responded with the CBS link to the NYME autopsy)
3) Even if he did die of an accidental choke, the cop should lose his job, not go to jail for murder (pointed out that the choke holds were illegal for the NYPD, and that there are lower charges than Murder 1 and 2)
4) He was exonerated by a jury of his peers, why would they do that for no reason? (Pointed out that our peers don't always have our best interests in mind)

And she's still raving away about people hating cops.

If the jury consisted of people like that, no amount of evidence or legal guidelines in the world would convince them to indict this officer.

It's sad how accurate GTAV is on this. If you go up to a police car you'll see the words "Obey and Serve" rather than "To Protect and Serve".

Even direct video evidence is worthless.

The police, as usual, are doubling down on making sure everyone knows that they're only interested in protecting their own.

This is exactly why this happens. We have a few posters in this thread with this same attitude.

Glad I stopped using FB. But I always hear about people saying that their FB feed and their friends are always saying really terrible shit about topical events. I couldn't handle it, or contain myself. I would get into too many arguments.

Anyways, your friend is just delusional. Trying to make excuses. If he really can't admit there is a systematic problem here, he'll never see it. Hell, here is a crime WITH actual video...showing the entire thing, and he still finds a way to excuse it. Yep, can't change his mind. He's already made up his mind that people all hate cops, therefore cops aren't corrupt or capable of crimes. That people killed by cops, are surely criminals doing criminal things to justify it.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Dunno what to say. If I was American, I wouldn't want to live in a country that continues to allow this sort of thing without seemingly any government intervention to fix things. The system has quite clearly broken down and justice is no longer being done.

Well, there's some hope:

http://www.capitalnewyork.com/artic...embers-call-federal-investigation-garner-case

"Members of New York City's congressional delegation called for federal intervention in the case of Eric Garner, after a Staten Island grand jury voted not to indict the police officer at the center of the case."

Hopefully this pushes stuff into happening then. The eyes of the entire world are watching and judging America as a really sad joke of a place these past months.

This is fucking bullshit, I'm Dominican American and I say that this is HORSE SHIT, he wasn't resisting, the motherfuckers got away with murder.

I will be happy if he is charged. But I hope they don't try to scape goat this guy so they can go back to business as usual. It's not JUST about the officer. It's about the police and a country who is willing to let them kill with impunity.

Fixing the later part is going to very tough.

How is it even possible for the cop to get off on this. The video evidence is right there! Shit was ridiculous before, this is mind-boggling.

Also, I wonder how large of protests we will be seeing after this one

If anything, the push for cameras on police officers should go ahead further after this. I'm damn sure this cop is going to be punished after a further investigation.

Yup. All a charge would do is quiet the people starting to realize something is wrong. The real message it sends is "you better protest and riot if you want justice" which is really not the way it's supposed to work.

Unbelievable. I think this is proof enough the Grand jury system needs to die on cases of Police actions etc. Statistics prove it is just too useless a measure that can easily be corrupted or swayed to lead to certain outcomes.

Cameras will only work for the ones with consciences, these mysterious "good apples" we sometimes hear tales of.

Not surprised at the decision at all, just deflated

Let this be a reminder next time you duck out of jury duty or get annoyed by it. Think long and hard about the people who end up serving and are casting votes on these situations.

Step 1 in setting up more police brutality: make sure protesters can't legally be anywhere to provide cover for a confrontation.

1) Please protest peacefully!
2) Woopsie, we've blocked off this nice public plaza
3) GET OFF THE STREET YOU ARE STANDING IN A PUBLIC SPACE AND THAT'S BAD YOU ARE SUBJECT TO ARREST STOP RESISTING

You see that's the problem! Everyone thinks this just started happening. It's been happening for years, decades, centuries. It's just with the now ubiquitous nature of cameras and YouTube citizens now can see what's been happening. It's crazy how technology is going to be at the forefront of the new civil rights movement.

Don't forget: America was built on the premise of white male supremacy. America was stolen from Native Americans and then built up on the backs of Black slaves.

This is so fucking disgusting and sad. I just saw this pop up on CNN and was enraged and just... sad. This man was murdered for selling cigarettes? It was murder too, fucking cold blooded. That choke was not necessary at all. He has 6 goddamn kids.

Man who filmed the entire encounter is being railroaded by the police on supposed gun charges. Gun had no fingerprints on it yet he supposedly had it in his hands. Grand Jury indicted him on gun charges but nothing for the cop
