I think the only time that's happened was either when the keys were pirated or when the publisher complained.
It's still worth it to be careful and get multiple confirmations of a foreign websites safety in regards to this matter.

The keys could be stolen or copied straight from the source (the developer). Generally, if the developer or whoever generates the keys was aware of it, they should be able to track at least stolen ones through which shipment it was and send exact lists of blacklisted ones to Valve.

GameStop Eyeballs Steam's Milkshake

GameStop is apparently looking to take a bite of Steam's pie and it's going to use Battlefield 3 to do it.

Remember back in March, when GameStop acquired the Impulse digital distribution platform from Stardock? It's no Steam, but Impulse is up there among the industry's tier-two big boys like Direct2Drive and GamersGate, and the purchase made it clear that GameStop was serious about dodging the digital bullet.

The sailing seems smooth so far: industry analyst Colin Sebastian wrote in a Baird Equity Research investors report that the company expects digital sales to balloon to $1.5 billion by 2014, from a predicted $500 million for 2011. The majority of GameStop's current digital sales is DLC sold in conjunction with in-store marketing but with the acquisition of Impulse, the company plans to become a bigger player in the field, in part by taking "a meaningful share from market leader Steam."

One step in that strategy will apparently be taken with EA's modern combat shooter Battlefield 3. Rumors that the game would not appear on Steam surfaced earlier this week and the Baird report has now confirmed it. "The upcoming EA title Battlefield 3 will be sold as a download through GameStop, but not through Steam," it says. "Given Steam's dominance - and insistence on users downloading a Steam client application - publishers are likely to be receptive to a competitive alternative."

Whether or not publishers are actually looking for a "competitive alternative" to Steam, the digital marketplace is proving extremely lucrative for GameStop. The company's total sales for the first quarter of 2011 hit $2.28 billion, a year-over-year increase of 9.5 percent, while digital sales skyrocketed an astonishing 53 percent over the same period.

Yeah the story there isn't that Impulse is getting BF3 (it would have regardless), it's that apparently the Origin/Steam/EA/Valve pissing match continues so thoroughly that they've already wrote off BF3 on Steam this early in the game.

The keys aren't even a "too good to be true" price. New release retail games are $19.99 in Saint Petersburg. $19.99 is about the lowest I've seen any new game on the Key seller sites I visit, and that's probably a promo to get people to register. Most are $25-$35, which would net the seller a pretty heft profit vs. selling them locally in a store.

Shouldn't pubs want their games available in as many stores as possible? They can't all be as deluded as Gamestop is convinced after this EA nonsense.

But I won't trust this news till we get P.KLEP on the matter. That dude is great at investigative journalism.

Steam giving 503 service unavailable on store pages for anyone else?

As of right now, yep! I'm guessing it's getting hammered for some reason, and it'll be available in a few / more than a few minutes.

EA's steam support has always seem forced and lukewarm. Can't be too surprised that they are looking to cut out the middle man, even if that means supporting another middle man to do so. They probably have more leverage with other services too, I imagine. Either way, you can vote with dollar. I don't see myself buying anything outside of the steam ecosystem due to convenience of having everything under one service. I can only hope that EA is just doing timed exclusives for this stuff.

Hey remember when Battlefield 2 was the sample game shown in the Steam About page? Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away...

It's actually gotten to the point where I'm about to lose all interest in BF3 (which I'm sure will please many here, since me not caring = no more rants). Probably just wait till it's available for 10 bucks. Maybe by that point, the infamous balancing issues that all BF games launch with will be fixed a little.

Yep same here. The more and more I hear about BF3, the less excited I am.

I think I'll pass on it. It not being on steam is really just the last straw. More power to EA I guess, but it's ridiculously stupid to shun the largest DD dealer on the PC just so you can strongfoot yours and Gamestop's DD service into the market.

It's not like EA has had the PC market's best interest in mind, and they won't in the future if their profits dry up.

As stupid as it sounds I'd avoid them just because they aren't in my region. I'm region locked. I don't want to see "Witcher 2 [RU]" in my steam list. No offense to russians.
You don't in the list, just the transaction log.

Seeing as I own all the Arma 2 games on Steam I am able to get Arma X for 36USD and it appears it is giftable for that price, PM me if you're interested, will need paypal in advance though.

My guess: Battlefield 3 comes to Steam the day after it is officially released. This way there is no additional incentive to pre order from Steam. They have done this before with other games...once the pre order bonus is gone release it on Steam!

Since digital is too expensive for EA to run, I'm going to be buying BF3 at retail to give EA the margins they want for the title.

Haha, if EA actually do keep Battlefield 3 off Steam for good, I'd love to see their sales numbers compared to BC2 or another comparable title available on Steam.

Kinda funny to think that Activision has no problem supporting Steam and even build in Steamworks to their PC games.

EA is dumb for trying to leverage Battlefield 3 like this. Their biggest problem is Modern Warfare 3, not Steam.

They're going to learn a harsh lesson. 70% of something is worth more than 100% of not much.

Too bad Steam never posts sales figures, i would love to know this as well.

The guy who made a big deal about Steam pulling Alice off of the storefront even though it was never up to begin with?

Well, after reading this newest developments in the EA vs. Steam debacle, I've finally made it up my mind. I will not be getting Battlefield 3. As much as I would like to support a game designed for the pc, I can't bring myself to supporting EA in their madness. Whatever goodwill EA had attained with the hardcore in the last few years by making Mirrors Edge, Dead Space is now over.

As many here say:

"No Steam, no buy."

Can you buy Half Life on Origin?

For me it all depends on how good Red Orchestra is. BC2 is pretty much my go to multiplayer game, of course that only means I might play it for an hour every two months or so.

So if it's fun I might not even need to buy Battlefield 3. But if I do it's going to be at a big box retail store or gamersgate.

It's a good thing I prefer to buy retail boxes over digital, even sometimes for PC games.

Either way, I've usually been partial to purchase EA games at retail.

Can you buy any non-EA game on Origin?

Not even close to the same thing. Steam already has an established community of hardcore PC gamers that would buy BF3 in droves. Origin has nothing.

*sigh* here we go again. There are many reasons for people wanting games on Steam, they've been outlined countless times. Let's not start the "omg people who don't want to buy it cos its not on Steam are stupid lol" posts again.

Is there a list of Amazon PC Game Downloads that are compatible with Steam? I just found out I have $20 in "Downloadable Software" credits with Amazon and would like to get something that I can use the cd-key on Steam.

I'm not saying it was a particularly genius decision on EA's part. I also don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to try and establish their own distro. Outside of the install base, it's exactly the same thing. Who cares how many "hardcore" gamers use one or the other? Give me a break.

I just find it weird that people who were previously excited about the game are going to dismiss it over a storefront. I'd personally like to see games in as many stores as possible, but I also really want to play Battlefield 3.

What's bullshit is them removing games from Steam.

Way to miss the mark. The issue isn't EA starting Origin, its them specifically targeting Steam users by withholding games from said service and instead placing the game on every service but Steam. Are they still offering gamers multiple options? Yes. But they're also limiting the options by refusing to sell said game on the most popular of services. If they wanted to use BF3 to grow Origin they should've kept it exclusive to the service but that obviously isn't their focus with this move. Their focus is to limit Valve and Steam.

Ah, yeah, I see the DD list now. That is kind of fucked.

Because if I have all my songs on iTunes, I don't want Fleetwood Mac to come along and say oh hey we're releasing this new album, but it's only on FleetwoodTunes, and you have to download our program to listen to it, it won't work on the programs you already use.

And yet that's what Valve did with Steam in the first place. Do people think that Steam just popped up out of nowhere?

The difference is that when Valve did this with Steam there was no other service. There was no Origin. There was no Gamersgate. There was no Impulse. Should they sell their games on other services now? Sure, why not. Is it the same situation with Origin today as it was with Steam back when it launched? Not even close.
