To be fair, Orion is terrible. They released it broken and hadn't fixed it months after either. Maybe they made it better by now, but I doubt it. Deceitful and lied straight-up. My most regretted purchase on Steam.
I say you should get it for the modding scene alone.
I guess the good news is I can throw it in the garbage and have one less disc/manual in my "Box of Junk".
It's a game 100% designed around co-op. And a lot of western gamers love that. (I don't). Yes, it's not very good in singleplayer but that's not how the designers intended for you to play it, so I feel it's kind of unfair to judge it based on the "escort mission".
Gamers of the world, who can't agree on anything, unite on one thing: escort missions suck.

Personally I think Nightmare is the only proper way to play the game. It's not frustrating by any means, but it does give more purpose to the mechanics that would otherwise feel too repetitive.
It's actually fairly well balanced. I NEVER play games on Hard, but Nightmare causes you to play differently, in that you're just lacking in resources. More running away, which is exciting. I'd say give it a try.
Consider the Color Mod. Makes most of the game look a lot better, and less rust-filtered.
Fun for co-op naturally, but didn't enjoy it as much as RE4. They weaken you as an individual to facilitate the co-op and it suffers considerably for it if you just wanna take it solo with the AI companion.
Keep in mind the game locks out Nightmare by default until you finish it on Normal, but you can use the -developermode launch option to unlock it with no repercussion.
Because letting someone throw themselves into the most difficult mode without trying the normal mode can lead to people becoming unreasonably frustrated with a game? And they give you a very simple option that apparently has no downside to play the hard mode first if you really want to? I'm not really seeing negatives here.
