It's... not all that good, sadly.
The vehicle sections are irritating and there's only a handful of locations, which get reused constantly. The game also just... ends abruptly, without any payoff.
Yeah, and it's for this reason that I recommend people brush up on their history of id's games so they have a general idea of what to expect. For the uninitiated, though:
- The story is virtually non-existent
- Despite the trailers suggesting otherwise, the world is nothing like Fallout or Borderlands. You have a main city from which you accept quests, and from here you travel to a handful of locations, which function as regular levels, using your vehicle
- Quest design is your standard go here to kill that/fetch this affair. Your second time through a level, though, the layout is slightly different, so it's not entirely monotonous
- There is a loot system but it's more of a "junk" system -- you collect trash or other desired though otherwise useless items and sell them for money
- The vehicular component is fine when it comes to races, but the modes that place on emphasis on combat -- such as Rocket Races, which have you chasing checkpoints all the while dodging enemy fire -- can be frustrating
- The game has its BFG equivalent but
there is no final boss, so don't make the same mistake I did and save the ammo, expecting to have something to waste it on
- The campaign ends abruptly -- there's practically no ending at all
- There is a rudimentary crafting system that allows you to make, say, your own health kits, but your health also regenerates, so...
- Wingsticks are
awesome
Edit: I forgot a couple of things:
- The FPS core is classic id -- for some folks, it feels dated, but for those who grew up playing Doom or Quake, it's delightfully refreshing
- There are two "worlds": the wasteland and Subway Town
- There's
DLC and it's apparently quite good, especially for the price
