So I just completed Borderlands: The Presequel.

Gosh. This is a case where I wasn't expecting much, and even those expectations were barely met - and I played it in co-op which should always be more fun when it comes to this franchise! The visuals were obviously upgraded (Physx was put to great use here) and the humor was still OK, but other than that, it just didn't cut it for me. Thankfully it's a somewhat shorter experience than B2, because it *really* started to drag towards the end of the game. Confusing level design at some points was also one of the downsides for me.

A very uneven experience, but I can somewhat recommend it to the people who aren't burned out on the franchise yet, and only to them probably. Thankfully I got it at a discount, otherwise I would have regretted the purchase.

I've never touched any of their games, but I'm pretty tempted to grab Endless Legend, looks fun as hell. Is it any similar to the Civilization franchise? It's the only TBS series I'm familiarized with.

Quite. Though Amplitude is great at making their games unique within the 4x space at the same time. Art and world building specifically are quite a bit above most any other strategy company, IMO.

I will never understand why people are willing to invest so much effort into something they can never own and is most likely going to be taken way.

Guys, nobody will shut it down. You guys have a really warped view of the ammount of games that get taken down. Here's a thing: most fan games are not taken down, and will not ever be taken down.

I will never understand why people are willing to invest so much effort into something they can never own and is most likely going to be taken way.

If you have the skill necessary to make that game, then do it with your own characters. You can make money, and as an added benefit someone might actually get to play it.

For the same reason people like to write fan fiction and draw fanart? People like those worlds and those characters and like to create things about them because they are passionate. This is not hard to understand.

Even Nintendo generally isn't as bad as people think either. Unless you're advertising your project as a "HD remake/version" or as a "sequel", you'll generally be fine. There's thousands of fan games out there, some very, very sucessful, that didn't get a single takedown notice. A Life is Strange visual novel, that doesn't share the same gameplay or even plot is definitely safe.
