Just got my email from GAME...

"We are sorry but your recent order has been cancelled due a problem with your payment."

I've never had a problem using PayPal with GAME before. Why does it have to be this instance?

I cancelled my order a while back. I felt dirty giving GAME money, and I thought I'd play it safe and let others take it for a test run.

Me too. I didn't feel dirty but the whole thi feels like something for tinkerers for now. I might jump in a bit later.

If GAME are shipping already I'm hoping those of us that ordered through Steam will get our shipping confirmation soon as well.

Not that I'm doubting Valve will get my stuff to me in time for the 16th, but it'd be nice to know that a courier has it already :p

Just got my email, says it should be here tomorrow, which would be nice if true. I could see it getting here overnight as it's only a 3 hour drive away.

Same - Game are finally processing the order and set for Oct 16th delivery!

I'd be livid. They waited until now to determine that. Ridiculous how so many of these retail outlets have in some way screwed this up vs what would usual be a seamless process using any online distributors.

I doubt GAME are shipping, they are just packing and getting ready to ship.

Is there any video showing the advanced options for the button pad setting? Was trying to look for one but couldn't find any

Processing, not shipping. Will probably dispatch tomorrow for delivery on the 16th

I think FedEx estimated the arrival date when the label was printed under the assumption that Valve would ship the package the same day.

:| If Valve said it was shipping and e-mailed last week about making the tracking number and all that, surely that means they have the stuff and it's just shipping it out.

Not a question pertaining to the Controller, but one to the Steam Link if anyone has got theirs yet.

Can anyone confirm or deny that a Dualshock 4 and DS4Windows will work with the in-home streaming and Link? Just wondering about that.

Two Weeks Playing With The Steam Controller Impressions [Tiny Build Dev]

I was lucky enough to get the Steam Controller a bit earlier so we can figure out layouts for relevant games. I spent last two weeks playing my favorite desktop games on the couch and here are my impressions.
Proof -
TeZSRH3.png

  • Most games work out of the box. In Big Picture Mode you can select default layouts and if the game supports an Xbox 360 controller, odds are you can play it easily on the Steam Controller.
  • It takes a while to get used to pure-controller games. The buttons are smaller and are shifted to the center than on other controllers. This means your thumb might feel awkward at first.
  • This gets heavily outweighed by being able to play games like SimCity and other "pure desktop" games. Initially I had trouble scribbling down roads, but about an hour in I got the hang of it. Nothing beats laying down on the couch and playing your favorite games.
  • It has two AA batteries that fit into the handles much like the old OUYA controller
  • The central Steam button works like the system interface button on consoles - pulling up the dashboard
  • The UI of Big Picture has been heavily revamped and streamlined, it's a great experience to pull it up, reconfigure your controls, and jump back in
  • The rumble feature on the trackpad is now configurable. You can make the tactile feedback heavier or lighter which is a nice addition. I found myself using the lightest setting possible just to get a feeling for how fast it should be going
  • Having difficulties mimicing "controllers" in FPS games. It's best to play FPS games in mouse+keyboard settings, not enable their native controller support. You can replicate the regular controller on the touchpad, and it just doesn't feel natural. I sucked badly at CS:GO with the Steam Controller. Even worse than with the mouse. With practice it can be worthwhile though. In Team Fortress 2 I had fun playing as the Engineer -- not engaging directly in combat, rather working on my defenses and killing spies. This felt pretty natural.
  • Found myself using the controller as the default "remote" for the living room PC. Instead of picking up the touchpad I normally use, I'd just get the controller to launch videos. It mimics the mouse accurately.
  • The hardware itself is well built. It's too early to say if it will be durable or not, but it's definitely better than most 3rd party Xbox 360 controllers I have. The left stick feels great. The right rumble pad is fantastic. The buttons take time to get used to. Triggers and shoulder buttons feel natural.

tl;dr the Steam Controller is a good piece of hardware that'll take your favorite desktop games to the couch and replace your living room PC input method

Can someone who is lucky enough to have the steam controller comment on how well (or horribly) it works with FPS games on the PC? Would you still be at a huge disadvantage against mouse/keyboard players in online multiplayer?

Thanks!

Two things I notice: He mentions that he was bad at CS:GO... worse than with a mouse... I think this guy usually used a controller for his FPS's, and the steam controller is a lot closer to a mouse aim (though slightly gimped) than it is a controllers aim. So Id keep that in mind.
Two, his comment on the buttons seem to be, more or less, that its like the Wii U's controller.

Wege, you'll be at a disadvantage while you get adjusted. We have yet to see if that gap will close to being negligible in practice, or if it'll be something worth considering. At any rate, it'll be much less of a disadvantage than with a regular control stick.

"Worse than a mouse" should be the expectation, as should "better than a dual stick controller", but it's going to vary from person to person, how much they play, their prior experience with the game and how adept they can with the Steam Controller. In the end, every one of us has ridiculous amounts of experience with a mouse / keyboard, or even a dual stick controller. Very few of us has any where near enough experience with the Steam Controller, and probably won't in the grand scheme of things

Some have a decent experience, some see great potential, others find they do worse, others don't like it at all.

Well, Game encountered a problem with my payment and decided to cancel the order rather than let me amend it.

So unless I can secure one inshore or get them to reverse it (unlikely) I'll be seeing you guys next month! Really not happy.

You're right, but I was saying that the way he words it, he makes it sound like it was terrible. I'm saying that it sounds like he isn't adjusted to the "mouse way" of aiming -- directly vs indirectly. I think that the Steam Controller will get up to about 80% of the accuracy/speed of a mouse, as opposed to the like 10% of a controller. That 20% or so difference (numbers are totally out of my ass btw) probably won't make a difference to a lot of people. It will of course take a lot of getting used to.

I'm going to buy from GAME but I hate that they're bundling a £20 steam card with it. I just want the controller. I'll choose if I want to buy credit thankyouverymuch.

Aw, tracking label originally said it was estimated to be here today. Took a look and it got moved to arriving on Friday. Oh well, I'll have lots of time to play with it this weekend!

I've had a tracking number for a couple days (US here - first batch order). Yesterday, FedEX said it would be here today (10/13), today it says delivery will be Friday (10/16).

Fuuuuuuuuuuuu.

Well, after worrying about not getting my shipment confirmation, it finally just came in today and it says that it will be delivered tomorrow(!?).

Quite surprised by that, but I suppose it's coming out of IL and I'm only a state away. We'll see!

You probably want to hide the long number in purple - anyone can look at you address and details of delivery using it

Awesome, got the Shipment Prepared status update email today. Tracking # says estimated delivery tomorrow.

Yeah I wouldn't bet on that. You will most likely get it Friday as some of the people who had the same experience are already reporting.

I really can't wait to try this controller out this weekend. I've got my steam library all installed and ready to go.

It seems like the early reaction is that console gamers aren't really the audience for this, and that it's pretty much for mouse and keyboard fans who want to play on the couch. But as a console gamer who both likes Nintendo's sticks-on-top layout and dislikes analog stick aiming, I'm hoping the controller will suit me.

My goal was to get something like a 360 controller, but with superior trackpad aiming. In other words, something like the Wii remote and nunchuk, but with adequate button options. Based on the the way camera control is done with the touchpad, it doesn't seem like that will work out. It'll pretty much have to be kb+mouse style controls and camera movement, which will be fine as long as it's even vaguely similar to the hybrid dual analog/mouse feel of the Wii remote.

Same here. I'm surprised it went from "label created" to "arriving tomorrow" instantaneously, but maybe that's what we paid Valve $8 shipping for.

Another one who can't let go of using the face buttons or analog stick. I'm sure Valve got people at their offices who are by now competent at using the touchpads in the way they were intended (without lifting your thumbs off them) I wish they would release a video of someone using it.

Agreed. Tired of people using the controller "wrong."

They mention that the right pad still works as a mouse without Steam running. I thought early impressions confirmed that the controller doesn't work at all unless Steam is running, at least minimized in the system tray?

Maybe the reddit author made a mistake and had Steam minimized.

When Krejlooc got it, at first it didn't work, but later that got fixed.
