So the dev is getting paid by Intel? I really don't see a giant corporation like that paying an indie dev to lock their game to newer CPUs for a few months.

rocket (of DayZ fame/infamy) commented on the topic of VR exclusivity.

The hard truth about Virtual Reality development

His take on the matter is that VR development is not profitable so devs need to take money from platform holders just to be able to complete their work. And taking money means things like timed exclusivity. And he says that people who clamor for platform neutrality may be detrimental to the growth of VR in general.

He makes good points but I just can't agree with that conclusion. A fractured market might be good for platform holders who are trying to beat the competition and subsidies are good for developers who need funds to develop but I don't think that consumers being the losers in all of this is the right thing to happen.

Rimworld sucks me in like no other game....
except for Factorio

I always want to quit at a good stopping point, but then a raid pops up, or a heatwave, or a mecanoid army attack that occurs concurrently with a solar flare and a flu outbreak. It has that "just one more turn" style similarly to Civ.

Yeah, RimWorld really has legs. It's a title that never drops out of rotation. Always there for me to pick away at while I'm enjoying other games. I find that whenever I return to it, I'm compelled to dig just a little deeper, peeling away another layer of it's complexity.

I always wanted to get into Dwarf Fortress, but honestly found the ASCII presentation just a bridge too far. In contrast, RimWorld offers user-friendly graphics & UI, yet less depth. The punchline is that I find the level of minutia in RW to be the sweet-spot for my gaming lifestyle. It's not over my head, but it pushes me to keep learning the subsystems on a more advanced level. In the end, it feels like a perfect version of DF-lite for DF-wannabes.

At this point I'm really struggling between voting RimWorld or Stephen's Sausage Roll for my GOTY. On a daily basis, I find myself flip-flopping back and forth worse than a US politician.

In other news, dev's Twitter says Alpha 16 is being tuned & bug-tested. Transport pods look to be included in this round. Wonder if it will make it out by the end of the year?

What is the best digital audio workstation that is available on Steam currently? I'm leaning towards Sonar, but let me know if you guys have recommendations. Thanks.

Rimworld is definitely my favorite game of the year. Sad that I don't think it can be voted for official GAF and SteamGAF awards because of the EA. Hopefully next year. It really is at times a life consuming, sleep ending game. Just last night I lost an hour of sleep trying to sketch out some new rooms and defenses for my newest base.

God help me if the game ever becomes focused on playing longer term colonies or multiple colonies that interact in a large, more living planet.

Honestly, this strikes me as bollocks.

If we're simply talking whether the vote gets counted or not, I'm nominating RimWorld this year either way. It's one of, if not the, best game I played this year.

Heck, it's not like votes being counted or not is gonna make a lick of difference with my Top 3 anyway (Stephen's Sausage Roll, RimWorld, Farm Sim 17).

They can't ban you for including an EA title in your list, right?

Lol no of course not. But there are a lot of other great games this year I want my vote to count towards so I'm going to go for those.

Did the latest beta update completely break Steam for anyone? I am on W10 and when I launch Steam, the window will not maximize and then crashes when I try to close it. Uninstalled, cleaned registry and reinstalled... same deal. Non beta client seems to work, but the latest beta is borked by my account.

It's got something to do with the controllers being plugged in. I'm in the same boat right now with my DS4. If you disconnect them then it starts up fine, and if you have a 360 style controller you should be good if you revert. However if I revert clients that means I have no DS4 support anymore...so I'm just sitting and waiting until it's fixed.

Thank God for DS4Windows!

Bought Reigns from the last sale and didn't have such a great time with it. I was surprised reading RPS's article on it where they said the game doesn't feel repetitive while my experience was completely different. There isn't that big of variety in the cards meaning it gets very stale very fast. Not the biggest fan of the humor either which could have salvaged a lot I think. It's just designed so heavily around mobile that it really suffers because of it on PC. Not the best fit for the platform imo.

I agree. The game is innovative and somewhat challenging, but very repetitive.

This is exactly what bounced me right off of Sunless Sea in spite of being its target demographic (words nerd).

Too many restarts with repeated content.

Booring.

I can't seem to get IdleMaster to work anymore. When I launch it, it keeps saying "unable to load medals". I've tried uninstalling it and downloading it again but it doesn't work. Any idea why?

Biggest problem I had with Reigns was that actually finishing the campaign required a hell of a lot of luck with what cards came up.

I managed to beat the game with less than 10 turns left :/

Total Warhammer's Wood Elf DLC and two pieces of free DLC are live. 5.5 GB altogether including the patch.

  • New Wood Elves Race in the Grand Campaign
  • New additional Race-specific currency: Amber
  • Wonder-based Campaign victory condition
  • Wood Elves may conquer any region on the map
  • Two New Playable Legendary Lords: Orion and Durthu
  • Two new Lord types with deep-specialisation skill trees
  • Three new Hero types with deep-specialisation skill trees
  • Comprehensive Wood Elves army roster
  • Adds an additional campaign map to the game with the unique ‘Season of Revelations’ Wood Elves story Campaign
  • New Unique Monsters, Heroes, Magic and Game Features
They're a weird faction with high combat mobility, powerful ranged and monster units, and also uniquely capable of holding both Human/Vampire Counts and Greenskin/Dwarf lands. Gonna be an interesting one.

I initially put Rimworld down waiting for a patch to something, don't remember what. Curious to see the changelog, and doubly curious to see if it includes rebalanced attraction rules or whatever it was the dev was saying would happen. That's gonna decide how I treat Rimworld from this point on.

It seems like they are going in the direction of multiple colonies since they are debuting caravans, transport pods, and movement throughout the planet in the next update.

I don't see much change there whether you are a fan of their games or not, Ubisoft already targets a mainstream audience. A takeover by a larger company will likely just see them move further down the road of accessibility and throwing the widest net possible.

The current status quo of the company has always been quite hostile to the PC consumer. That has the possibility to see change under new leadership since the market is so large.

Could be a net positive, but most likely ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That seems like a non-issue from what I've read.

Really hoping KOEI Tecmo's gonna get the DQ Heroes 2 up on Steam day and date with PS4 >_>; I generally wouldn't get KOEI Tecmo games now but might make an exception on DQH2.

huhh how about no? Every big publisher goes for the mainstream, that's a given. Ubi, however, is doing much better than most of them. They took all the feedback from their games for Watch Dogs 2 (which is much better in its open world and mission design), the support for Rainbow Six Siege has been amazing and the game is great, both on PC (especially) and on consoles. They gave AC it's well deserved break.

Their ports for a long time have been pretty good on PC, too. Some issues here and there, but far from bad.

They greenlit Beyond Good And Evil 2. For Honor looks amazing. Wildlands looks good fun, especially in co-op.

They have been heading in a great direction. I know that you hate the ~blockbusters, but Vivendi will definitely fuck Ubi and their plans.

I really doubt that will happen because of the sales of the PC version of DQH. They have themselves to blame for delivering another lackluster K-T port and Squeenix twiddling the thumbs to it.

Dunno if this is a good place to ask but....

I want to voice chat in-game while playing, certainly for coop games anyway. How are most people doing that for those "comfy couch" scenarios?
I don't want to string a 20foot rca/USB cable to my couch.
The 360 wireless controller plus Mic has terrible quality and lag at least on Windows.
I haven't tried an xbone controller but I am expecting that the quality is still terrible like the 360 controller.
I was thinking of using a Bluetooth headset since my gaming htpc has BT but I have a feeling the lag and quality will still be crap and I worry that the game sound output will come through the headset and I would prefer to have only the voice output come through the headset.

Any ideas?

Yeah I saw that picture but wasn't entirely sure what it means gameplay wise. But if it means I can generate one planet and keep playing different maps on that planet and have those colonies interact with each other in meaningful ways it's going to get crazy.

They greenlit BG&E2 after years of fan request, and for all we know, BG&E's fandom may as well be the niche-est of the niche.

Anyone using the xbox one controller with the wireless adapter? Does impulse triggers work with the adapter?

Just bought the s controller and looks like impulse trigger doesn't work using bluetooth apparently :/

And Microsoft locking impulse trigger for only UWP apps is pretty shitty as well since the feature itself is pretty good.

Other than that, a pretty solid upgrade from the 360 controller.

your point?

Like i said, they are improving. That includes taking fan feedback into account.

BG&E2 just felt like the odd one out of the pros you listed.
If anything, Ubi's recent multiplayer games have been pretty good and well recieved for the most part like what you wrote.

Yeah, I saw that planet picture too but never connected the dots. (We can now point to why Dwarf Fortress is over my head. :p )

But in Grief.exe's context, that sounds absolutely amazing.

A persistent save with multiple colonies, whether online or not, would be incredible in the longevity dept. Right now it's just, "Start from scratch, evolve tech to rocket off the planet." Rinse & Repeat.

I LOVE the idea of having a single save where I can bounce around different regions on the globe. Perhaps maintaining multiple colonies at various stages of evolution.

Man, it sure does get you thinking BIG for this game.

Yeah a lot of shit can rightfully be thrown at Ubi, but if the big 3 pubs they're easily the one most willing to take risks and diversify outside of, while still maintaining, the AAA status quo

Brigador is awesome!

Got it via the groupees bundle, and that was certainly worth it. Soundtrack is brilliant and the gameplay is good fun.

A word of warning though, you will likely start the game and get confused at what is happening with the controls - stick with it, as the game is using "tank controls" with good reason (though you can change this in the options). Normal gamepad is poop for this since it is too slow. Mouse and keyboard or Steam Controller is where it's at. Feels fun to control in a mech kind of style

Yeah it only works with the adapter. Have the adapter on my main PC and it worked. Went on vacation and went over bluetooth on my laptop and got nothing. It is a pretty good feature.

Namco Bandai can have a tales game day and date with the PS4 Version AND produce a demo, But Square Enix cant give a solid date at all for Nier and most likely will not have the demo that PS4 is getting :(

This... Is this the new Scamco? I can dig it.
