Steam Frame, Steam controller and Steam Machine Revealed

the specs are fine if this is indeed entry level. like if this is 300€ I will instantly buy it.
but I have this weird feeling that it will be priced above 500€, at which point it's not worth the price
Is there a more/equally powerful home theater type small form PC for around 500 atm? I imagine it could cost similar to current Deck (no built in screen/controller stuff, likely easier assembly/less amazing cooling solution needed and stuff) but Idk.

Being able to stream from PC to the Steam Frame sounds so cool. Can't wait to play my games on the backyard. :lollipop_content:

Steam Cube?

There's no handle. UN-SUEABLE!!!

Man I wish they'd have announced the price. Hard to get hyped on something I have no idea if I'm gonna buy day one.

I'm probably day one for the steam machine. So/so on Frame. Probably gonna skip the controller.

Man, imagine the posts here if Microsoft launched their next console as an RDNA 3 + fsr3 console with 8GB VRAM.
Specs are indeed weaksauce. It's basically Steam Deck but for 4k TVs.

My guess is they want to ride on their existing Deck certification as much as possible.

EDIT: Yep, here we go:

How in the world is it 'baffling' when anyone playing in the high end space is waiting for RDNA 5?
Because they got beat to market with what's essentially the same concept? Being a first mover is essential when you are trying to trailblaze.

Rn the %10 of the overall market is gonna get Valve's pitch first, and it will almost assuredly be a polished product out of the gate too!

Even Welfare thinks so as well.

you probably can get a 500€ PC with that spec. but the thing about this thing is that it is not upgradable aside from system RAM.
this means it will forever be stuck with 8GB or VRAM, which is creating issues even now, and will become a big issue once next gen systems are out.

so even if a standard component PC would be a bit more expensive, it's still a better value because a standard parts PC is not stuck with the configuration you buy it in.

For those complaining about the specs - remember that it could be an entry level console with a more powerful version coming later.
If they follow the Steam Deck model, the next more powerful Steam Machine could be 4 to 5 years away (If they even bother releasing another one). I love the idea of the Steam Cube, plug it to a 4k TV, press one button on the controller and boom, I'm in Steam OS ready to play my Steam games.

Price will be everything, because yes, specs are underwhelming. It's convenient, if you've been on Steam for a while you have hundred of games ready to go with the convenience of a console. Anything above 500 will not make much sense to me and sadly I have the feeling it's gonna be 600-700 without a controller. I wish they went with 2 versions, this one and a more premium/powerful one.

The Steam Machine sounds like an affordable way to get into the steam ecosystem for games like CS and Dota. I just don't know about demand. Maybe it'll sell well worldwide, but I don't see it doing much here in the states.

The Steam Frame, which I'm most interested in, just looks like a Quest 4. If it's not 500 or less, I'll wait for the next Quest. As much as I hate Meta, they're the best thing in VR right now.

We need games. This can't be marketed as a VR Chat and HL Alyx machine. I can already do all that wirelessly.

I have been at Dr. Appt today and just saw this. Wowowow!!!!!

Yipee!!!!

I want the new steam machine and I want it now, lol, hehehehe. I can have Playstation and steam machine, switch, custom PC. Oh my!

Bwahahaha!

I didn't say just any PC, small form factor matters (and reduces upgrading options too, even ram can be an issue then, as well as new bigger GPU models).

since this is essentially a laptop board you'll never be able to get a PC quite this small no.
but Mini ITX cases and boards are decent these days. and usually have enough space inside for most mid-range GPUs

Bingo. It really feels like they've made an android TV box out of a midrange phone, yes.

6 cores? 8GB? HMDI 2.0? I am a susker for portable computing and I'm struggling to see a point of this device if it will be (and it will be) above $300.

Nintendo is amoung the least powerful, yet they push prices sky high anyway.
Compared to the competition Nintendo hardware is relatively low in price. And it matters when comparing it to other devices. Pricing matters, power doesn't. Sooner these companies realize that the better. 10 million Switch 2 sales in around 4 months is phenomenal. It's not an accident it's selling so well in this climate of prices going higher and higher on everything.

In saying that, the Switch 2 should be far cheaper and I wish it was but it is the cheapest option around and that says heaps to the average consumer.

It's slightly less powerful than a PS5 in terms of GPU, but with RDNA3 it will be possible to use XESS or the leaked version of FSR4 int8, which may allow it to achieve comparable results.

If it comes out at a low enough price, I think it would be feasible to buy one along with a Steam controller to put in my living room and make use of my Steam backlog. It's a small, cute box and apparently silent.

Man, I do really hope they'll also release a "high-end" VR version that ditches all the standalone and instead uses the Steam Lighthouses for Tracking (they are just way superior) but keeps the battery and streaming with optional removal of the battery and a cable-connection if people prefer that.

I have no interest in paying the premium of it being standalone but never actually using it.

I cannot believe it. They did it.

This is all I'd ever hoped for and then some.

I need to buy them all day one.

Now compare these magnificent devices, full of compatiblity, freedom of choice and user friendliness, repairability and customizability, to what these pieces of shit companies Sony and Nintendo shit out.

Oh, I'm definitely getting one of the Steam cubes and controllers. But I wonder if you can slip extra NVMe SSDs in there somehow. (I haven't read this thread in my excitement, yet.)

TLDW: Lightweight, wireless with no latency and great visual quality?

Do Want Give It To Me GIF
So just to be sure, you can use the full power of your PC right? Can we get native rendering trought a cable or we are forced with streaming?

Those are my 2 questions, but I definitely want one.

Sony to Valve ''Our games will look wonderful on your Steam Machine'' and Valve responds with ''You ain't getting Half Life 3 no matter how much you kiss our asses''.

Call of Duty is still on last-gen consoles. Why is that? The jump between hardware from this gen to next is going to be much smaller, while being more expensive. Graphics as a whole have very clearly stagnated. It feels like this generation has just started. There is a zero percent chance that the cross-gen period won't be much longer than previous generations. Insane to think otherwise
Because Call of Duty is one the biggest-selling series of all time and there is much more of a sales opportunity for it on a small userbase mostly consisting of casual people playing live service games than there is for, like, Far Cry. This is like pointing out that FIFA still came out on PS3 in 2018.

Kind of want all three, especially the Steam Machine (depending on cost) to play bullshit games since my PC isn't near my TV.

Might also be good as a media player if it can play specific types of media.

Linus dropped a bomb.

Steam Frame SteamOS can play PC games like Alyx yes... but it also can install normal android APKs which means whole Android (Quest3/Pico4 and others) ecosystem is ready to be released on SteamVR.

Essentially PC + ANDROID ecosystem in the same device.

Haven't heard anything about cables. This is what they say when it comes to connecting with your PC:

Wireless Adapter and Dual Radios
The included plug-and-play 6GHz wireless adapter provides a dedicated link for both VR and non-VR streaming. Steam Frame's dual radios make this connection even more stable: One radio is dedicated to streaming the audio and visuals, and the other connects to your Wi-Fi. Two dedicated links, no competition for bandwidth.

And about the full power:
Supports stand-alone play, too
Steam Frame is a PC, and runs SteamOS powered by a Snapdragon® 8 Series Processor. With 16GB of RAM, Steam Frame supports stand-alone play on a growing number of both VR and non-VR games without needing to stream from your PC.
Keyword there being "too", so I guess yeah you are able to steam your non-VR games and play them using your whole PC power. I mean, the Steam Deck already supports that, would be weird for this to don't
