Steam Holiday Sales 2014 |OT3| : DIE HARDEREST (HAPPY NEW YEAR WOOHOO!!)

Are the PC versions of Lego Harry Potter games any good? I've had the urge to play some Harry Potter games after the little discussion in this thread the other day and they're only $4.99 apiece on Amazon.

I've played the "Years 1 - 4" game. I liked it a lot. If you've played a Lego game before, it's exactly what you'd expect and want from a Harry Potter version. If you haven't, it's a good entry into the Lego series of games, it's fun in single or co-op, it's a character collectathon, and the "feel" of being in Hogwarts is astounding - they did their homework on it.

I have 7 items in cart, but I'm waiting for that too. :'(

Problem is that CSD was a flash deal, so in the best case we'll get it in community vote, and we all know that we cannot trust the community to make the right choice. :'(

Was CSD a community vote/flash or was it a daily?

Thanks for Savant Ascent! Will be installing now (only 62mb), I'll try to write some impressions of the game as soon I get around playing it, definitely at the latest this weekend

Rayman Legends looks very appealing, but I'm thinking that artwork would look best on Vita, so I'll wait to pick it up on PSN later.

Ah, I'm glad you picked that up too, dear Monk - I thought maybe I was imagining things when the game wished me a happy New Year! Nice little touch.

I got no clue how you add your monthly paychecks to You Need A Budget's budgeting... D:

This demo is pretty short and to the point and then throws you in the deep end on figuring out how to add something like that.

Phew, I'm glad you heard that too, dear oipic! I thought this small celebratory Sangria was taking the best of me tonight.

Nice little touch indeed. :)

Hammerwatch short phone-written impressions:

It's fun! You need to open a port to host an online multiplayer game, but multiplayer is a lot of fun. I've only played the campaign mode so far (there's another tower defense-type mode and something else I believe), but think of it as a dungeon-crawler rogue-like, not randomized (camapign isn't at least), but it's challenging and fun. You go throw dungeons composed of three floors, trying to locate three buttons (one on each floor) to open the boss door. You go around collecting keys, pressing switches, fighting enemies, getting gold, finding secrets and item merchants, and upgrading your character with gold at merchants. Gold is shared the more players you have, and you get overall less with the more people playing. There's also lives that are shared, but you can use money to buy lives instead of upgrades if you desire, as well as potions with benefits like refill health and magic, limited invincibility, limited strength increase, etc. There are four different classes of character, which have different attack styles, special attacks (which use up magic), and amount of health and magic total they have. Upgrades can increase things like health, magic, strength I attack, strength of specials, speed, radius of distance attacks (only applies to two classes), combo time, and more, but it's different character to character and a fully maxed out character of one class will have different stats and abilities still to a different class on Max levels. I play a wizard, who has low health but strong distance attacks, and can learn more magic attacks that the other classes and has a high magic bar.

Game is hard at first, but you get better. There are buffs and blows that you can mix and match with each other to optimize your gameplay difficulty, though won't earn achievements with buffs on. Things like, infinite lives, regenerating health, one heart only, magic that doesn't automatically regain over time, you deliver double damage, enemies deliver double damage, etc.

I have enjoyed my time with it, and it's a fun rogue-like which shares a lot with Gauntlet. Recommend it if you have people to play it, and a rogue-like Gaunlet sounds fun to you.

What's the consensus on Hammerwatch? Watching the trailer is getting me all hot and bothered, any impressions?

I personally enjoy it, though it is not without its flaws. Played it for a few hours yesterday. It's a dungeon crawler through and through, though I guess that definition is rather vague.

You set out in a dungeon (first act is set in a Prison), and you have to progress up and down floors to unlock secret areas, kill monsters, get gold, acquire treasure, buy upgrades, and ultimately find the three runes that unlock the boss door. I suspect this pattern repeats throughout the game, as I am on the 2nd Act and it is much the same, just higher difficulty and variety of monsters.

There are three starting classes: Paladin, Warlock, and Archer. I only played as the Archer so I can't attest to the other two classes, but for my time it was pretty fun. Killing everything at range was great, though I couldn't run and shoot, which was disappointing.

Firstly, it's not a roguelike. I for some reason was under the impression it was, so for any that may think it is, it's not, at least not in the traditional sense. You earn 1-ups and whatnot as you progress, so you can die, and do so pretty often, either to traps or getting mobbed by dozens of enemies... Though I didn't start dying that frequently until the boss on Act 1 and the monsters in Act 2. Fyi, I was playing on Medium. I know there's a Hard mode, but I don't recall what, if anything, is beyond that.

You can upgrade several factors about your character including: weapon damage, weapon penetration, health, mana, move speed, combo timers, etc, using gold you earn from killing enemies. You spend this gold at various NPC's scattered throughout the Act you're on. There isn't experience gain, which kinda felt strange to me. There are also keys to earn in any given Act which unlock doors for you to either progress or earn more loot. Bronze, Silver, and Gold keys. Lots of hidden areas and nooks and crannies to be found as well. You can break pots and objects for gold, like various games of old.

The combat gets a little monotonous after the first half hour or so, though I did only play solo. I think it would be advantageous to play with friends if it all possible, as it doesn't really have that replayability I would hope for. Or at least, not when there's so many other excellent games to play.

Combat is quick however, enemies are plentiful, treasure is all over the place, and I'd say my purchase was justified. But definitely try it out co-op. It's enjoyable by yourself, but it's definitely a bit of a slog through the floors.

Sorry for the long post, hope this helps some people still on the fence about it!

As someone who really, really, really disliked Guacamelee (which is weird in itself, because I love Metroidvanias), Valdis Story is pretty awesome.

That's all I needed to hear to pull the trigger on the first one at least, if I like it enough I'll probably grab the second as well. Thanks!

Definitely heard it here too. Of course the guy then went straight on to complain about the damage I do to "his" cars during the races so that rather spoiled the effect...

I wonder if my fan or videocard is about to die. Used to get a pretty steady 60 FPS in Bioshock Infinite(with some minor fluctuations here and there) but now it seems to be running anywhere from 45 to 60 at random, and my fan is getting worked hard :/

Well, I was playing yesterday at night and I was hearing some sirens every now and then and was thinking, man, it's a busy night, lot's of ambulance cars driving by my street. Some people must have drank way too much. After all it was in-game when you are in your garage (I was using headphones). Lol :/

Recap day is going to be a snooze day for me I think.

I could really do with another day of r&r but I'm back to work tomorrow. Unless Volgarr makes a triumphant return I think I'm easy with what I got. And more than enough in the backlog for 52+ to put to bed this year.

So is Valdis Story the only game were buying today? I don't see anything else at a good price.

If you don't have them already.

Just Cause 2 for a fun open world third person shooter with one of the best ways to travel such a world, all in a relaxing tropical paradise when you aren't blowing things up or getting LOST.
Multiplayer with friends is a lot of fun. Truly a sandbox of "do whatever you want", be it a game of tag on top of two jumbo jets, an island long race, helicopter deathmatch of a 100 people, or most anything else you can imagine.

HammerWatch, as explained in some posts prior.

Then my own personal recommendation.

For those with jut a little bit more money or a desire to try something different from the other titles on sale, may I recommend to you Legend Of Grimrock.

A true throwback to the first person dungeon crawler brought to modern day design and creation techniques while retaining all of it's old school charm.

A title where a story is slowly and often subtly told to you as you travel through and explore the dungeons, discovering more about the people and the world you find yourself in, not unlike what some loved about Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, albeit more straightforward and clear.
The world is well designed, each section feels like it's own location rather than the rehashes that plague so many other dungeon crawlers, and the monsters are well crafted. As these games go, it's a joy to travel through once you become immersed.

Movement is tile based, so don't expect any quick running through like a Dark Souls, but this design is on purpose and the step by step manoeuvre still works remarkably well so that you are always best situated for what you want/need to find in a room, to solve a puzzle, or to face an enemy in the real time combat. While not the most involved combat, it does well for itself and plenty of strategy can go into it even if you may need to look up some explanations of magic.
Just remember it's not a game to rush through, to jump straight into battles or rooms, it's best left where you are careful and attentive to all that is present lest you fall into a trap or be crushed by a beat twice the size of a normal man.

If you are like me, you will find satisfaction in exploring the rooms, mapping it all out, figuring out what is a trap and which is not, and solving puzzles with monster slaying to keep it all fresh.
If you've always been interested in dungeon crawlers, but could never get into one before, this one to try. There are demos floating out there on the internet if you need it.

Nothing for me today other than Vladis... Still deciding. It looks a lot like Megaman to me for some reason.

Off topic, but I think Skype's facebook just got jacked.

I had the same thing with Bioshock Infinite. I wondered if it was a memory leak.

It got super choppy near the end.
