Quick question on Steam Home Streaming. How beefy does the receiving machine have to be for a 720p or 1080p image? And can I use a bluetooth controller on the receiving machine?

The CPU just needs to be able to handle H.264 video decoding. So it doesn't need to be that powerful.

I know people were experimenting with fairly old CPUs with positive results.

If it's a DX11 game it doesn't need to be SUPER beefy but it needs at least a midlevel graphics card. Also, you need either a really, really good wifi setup or you need to have it all wired because I've found that your connection is going to be the biggest factor when it comes to inhome streaming.

Graphical effects would depend on the host rig, for decoding I would think only bandwidth matters (framerate, resolution).

I completely overlooked the "receiving" part of his question. whoops, haha.

For those that pre-ordered off GMG, does your Doom 4 Beta key not register?

Bethesda's approach here is a little stupid. If you pre-ordered on Steam itself, you'll get the Doom beta when it's added to the pre-order sub:

If I pre-order the game digitally for Steam, will I still get access to the DOOM Beta?
Yes. Once you pre-order on Steam, your invitation to the DOOM beta will be associated with your user account. You will not receive a code.

But if you pre-ordered anywhere else, then you received an addition key that you'll need to register on the Doom beta site in order to receive your Steam-friendly one:

Other digital retailers' processes and/or participation may vary. We recommend contacting your preferred retailer directly for additional information.
How do I redeem my code?
Once you’ve received your boxed copy of Wolfenstein: The New Order or your key code from your participating digital retailer, return to wolfenstein.com/doom and follow the instructions located on the site. Once you enter your code you will be asked to provide a valid email address. You must use a valid email address that you will continue to use in the future; you will not be able to change the email address associated with your key code. We'll contact you at a later date with further instructions regarding the DOOM beta via the email address you provide when you register your code.

The latter is understandable for physical retail keys, but there's no reason why digital retail keys weren't just tied to the Steam pre-order sub.

I'll probably try it after I do the Millennium achievements tomorrow/after I wake up and do stuff.

The War of Human Tanks info will definitely help in a few days when I get around to it, thanks.

Eh I'm a patient guy. It'd take 20 Hours for Wolfenstein 2014 to be downloaded pre-patch to my Lappy anyways, so for the next few days I'll finish up 99 Spirits and Tex Murphy, then get into slaughtering Nazis.

I played it, don't bother. The first one is somewhat easy to get with 30 minutes of playtime, after that the game throws you into an open world without any real direction and I had no idea where to go or what to do to get the other ones.

Also with that little time left playfire won't register it anyway.

From Millenium, 3 Stars of Destiny and Book of Legends, 3 Stars is the only one that I could see playing longer than an hour. They're not very good games.

I did. Two of three achievements, neither of which have received Playfire money yet.

The .10 one, Kind Heart, is relatively easy, took me about 45 minutes because I got lost for a bit, but it's main story related and you can't really miss it. When you
get the option to kill or spare the thief girl's life, choose to spare her and you get the achievement.

The .50 one, Bear Hug, is a bit more involved and took me about 3 and a half hours to get, because once again I got lost. You have to
go to a section of the game called the Lone Cave and head all the way right. Once there, you'll encounter a friendly bear that will join your party. Proceed to one shot low level enemies until you kill 100 of them.

The .25 is actually the hardest to get because, well, you have to play the game for a longer period of time than the other two rewards to get to the location.

I wouldn't call any of the three Aldorlea games that were in the recent Playfire rewards bad games, but they definitely appeal to a small niche, like myself, that enjoy RPG Maker games. As Knurek said yesterday, or maybe it was the day before, the developer is a French guy, so English isn't his first language, so the dialogue is very stilted and dull at times. It's not the worst I've ever encountered though. One of the main caveats that I have to mention before anyone plays any of the games is that there are secrets strewn everywhere in each game, most of which are really useful. So if anyone does play the games, make sure to click everywhere, or hit enter everywhere. There's different difficulty options at the start of each so they're very beginner friendly, none of them are really too difficult on normal settings either. If you like SNES/GBA level mediocre RPGs, something like Tales of Phantasia for instance in terms of quality, can stomach sometimes odd and generally spaghetti dialogue, and have no problem with thoroughly exploring areas and getting lost, then you'll probably enjoy the three games at least very slightly. They won't be the best games you ever play, but they're not completely terrible, so there's that. Having done a bit of research on each of the three games before playing them, I can confirm that there are free guides for both 3 Stars of Destiny and Millennium A New Hope, no idea if they're any good since I just skimmed them briefly, but at least it's a start if you ever get too confused and frustrated. Plus each game has its own dedicated forum on the Aldorlea website, and the dev responds to questions and comments frequently on each games' community discussion hub.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Things like this will probably always make me smile from this point forward.

I guess I feel kinda proud of doing something that people enjoy, and then watching them spread the joy around like that. It's the exact reason why this feature was added - people love a reason to celebrate something. I would be insanely curious to know if people using Enhanced Steam (and seeing the birthday graphics) were also statistically buying more things on Steam that day, but I would wager that (as a whole) they are.

It kills me that Valve doesn't see the value in something like this. It's simple, and literally costs then nothing. People cherish their Steam accounts, which is painfully obvious when you get to know your customers. Besides, they have some kick-ass graphic designers and artists so I'm sure they could come up with something better than the streamers / balloons graphic I made.

It's a shame they don't realize that every feature you put into your store that impacts your users in a positive way not only creates further brand loyalty, but also often means increased revenue as well.

Well, hopefully there won't be a patch -- since Steam has no certification process there's really no reason why Bethesda shouldn't have uploaded the patched build. Of course, this doesn't always happen despite the fact it makes the most sense, as Scamco recently showed with Dark Souls 2.

That's awesome. I do hope that person realises this is an Enhanced Steam feature though (could have given you the credit :p).

Yeah what could be interesting is if you could make it show on the friends page if it's their Steam birthday. So say I click on my friends list in the community tab and if it's someones birthday for their Steam account I'd then know and could gift them something. You need to be on commission for all the extra business you'd be sending Valve.

So for the King's Bounty games that are on sale... reading the descriptions it seems like Crossworlds is the same game as Armored Princess, but with improvements? It says it's an expansion but it's standalone so I'm confused if I should go for both or if I just need one of them.

Was GMG suppose to get Killer is Dead and/or Transistor?

GMG's twitter has made mention of trying to get Transistor but Supergiant isn't talking whenever they're asked about it. No clue on KiD, someone said Deep Silver's games seem to have been removed from GMG enmasse so I wouldn't expect it.

I imagine that Valve has made quite a bit of money from Enhanced Steam, as well as other places like GMG, Humble, etc. I'm okay with that.

If Valve were smart, they would offer a 10% discount on games on your Steam birthday, with the exception of being able to gift them or add them to your inventory. They could even take it a step further, and offer this discount to anyone buying a game for you on your Steam birthday (again, without the option of redeeming it to your inventory, to prevent abuse).

It makes sense to do it with your Steam account anniversary, rather than your actual birthday, because it's a hard-and-fast date that Steam already tracks, and it cannot be changed (again, to prevent abuse).

And speaking of birthdays - can we please get the option to set our birthday in our account settings one time, rather than relying on our browser's cookies to remember? It's not like it would be hard...

crossworlds does have armored princess so there's no reason to get it unless you really want it for some reason. When you launch crossworlds you have the option of loading vanilla AP if you're really so inclined to play it or playing the new updated campaign(although I can't comment on it as I never finished it)

Ok, well this sucks.

Some idiot just tried to order Battlefield from Gamefly using my old credit card.

The joke's on whoever, as I'm six months behind on my mortgage and cancelled that card a while ago.

Any suggestions on how to proceed for those who have had to deal with this? Gamefly closed and locked my account and cancelled the order for me but wasn't able to provide an IP address or anything about the order.

Thanks in advance!

Jase what version of Black Ops did you still need/want? As Get Games have an Aspyr sale on with the Mac version being £14.99 which is about the cheapest I've seen it.

They have soooo much data on their users just going to waste. If the user numbers keep on going up it's just crazy not to have some specialist staff to maximise the Steam experience and not even talking about marketing their products but the simple and little things like you mention all the time.

Then again as I said before I get the feeling they're Raiders of the Lost Arking it and have 'Top Men' on the case.

Some spares, 99 Spirits is really good, a great game to play while watching TV.

Edit: Hmm, it seems ModBod does not like IndieGala links?

Thanks for Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny. The world can never have too many turn-based games.

Let's try these IndieGala links to see if ModBot will take them....

its the best game of last and this year. and its the only game JaseC has ever reviewed

Admittedly I haven't touched the game since it hit Steam last February. At the time the episodes were expected to be released just a few months apart, so after the first episode I figured I'd wait a year or so and play all of them back-to-back... but here we are 15 months later and there are still two episodes to go (not that I'm complaining about Cardboard taking its time to do things right).

Not trying to incite panic, but the way that Indie Gala is handling keys starting with today's bundle has some pretty serious security implications.

For starters, if you redeem an Indie Gala gift link, anyone that has access to that link also has access to your email address and Steam account name.

I still can't believe I found a physical copy for 5-10 euros a few years ago.

Shame that the single player was awful.

Where did you find it? I'm trying to get a copy (for mp, mainly) but the prices are still ridiculously high. I consider myself lucky for miraculously finding an unused copy of BO2 for 8€.
And Activision just had to make the Mac edition of BO not SteamPlay...

I actually bought the Mac version (a few months ago or so -- it was on sale on some Russian key site) before the Windows version (during the recent Acti sale), but I do need the former's DLC. Apparently it's not discounted, though. :(

ElCorteIngles in Spain (Huelva to be specific) while in vacation, was a year and half ago though, so doubt you'd get any luck.

As a colorblind guy, playing Chompy Chomp Chomp for the Playfire rewards was headache-inducing. Luckily it didn't take long at all. And I don't know if it was just something wonky with me, but my achievements didn't drop until after I exited the game. So if you think you should have unlocked something and it didn't pop, quit out before raging.

Right any advice if you can please SteamGAF. What's a good hacking game? I own Uplink but not tried it out yet and just noticed the Hacker: Evolution pack is -70% off on a weeklong. I'd prefer something more puzzle based and cerebral than linear and procedural if that makes sense. Thanks in advance.

I'm the other way around actually. I preferred the story of Black Ops but just couldn't get into the MP. Gameplay wasn't anything too special over the previous CoD's but at least it wasn't the total bat shit insane plots of the Modern Warfare games. Last one I really enjoyed before going off the series.

Always the way. Sucker you into buying the game at a discount and then pick up the DLC at full price. Don't these pubs know we don't play games just collect them?
