I changed. I can't play military / realistic shooters anymore and I loved the shit out of every Battlefield game up to BF3. Every time I play one of those games I ask myself "why?". But I enjoy every second of Doom or Shadow Warrior 2 for example. I guess it really is the realistic angle that hampers the majority of my enjoyment.

I think it is more thag kilitary shooters are too streamlined as opposed to those 2 games?

The Steam title of the game still makes me giggle. So silly.

Anyway. Happy birthday wishes all around SteamGAF.

Thanks, but my birthday was yesterday and it was predictably not a good one.

Yikes. That's a rough one.

My 18th birthday was on the day George W. declared war and, coincidentally(?), my notice to sign up for Selective Service was in the mailbox on that day. That was the only thing I got except for a pack of Black&Milds I bought myself. In hindsight, those were the worst part of it all.

Quick guide to Falcom games on Steam:

If you've never played anything Falcom, definitely check out the Ys series. Either Origin and Oath in Felghana are great entry points. After that there's Ys: Ark of Napishtim, which is the weakest of the 3D Ys games, but still a good game.
There's also Ys 1 & 2 for the oldschool Ys experience in 2D. They have a different combat system than the 3D ones and are more vague in terms of 'where do I have to go next?'.

Other then that, for turn-based RPG goodness check out the Trails in the Sky games. They're very story- and dialogheavy games with great characters (even town NPCS have their own lifes you learn about), story and absolutely amazing worldbuilding. The story starts slow (too slow for some :/), but the payoff is absolutely worth it.
The first one took me 60 hours, the second 90.

And then there's Gurumin, which is their weakest offer on Steam (also the only one not handled by XSeed). It's somewhat similiar to Ys, but not as refined and technically not up to par compared to the rest (1080p30fps lock...). Still, it's worth checking out if you can get it for cheap and you are done with all other Falcom games : p

Also all of them have GOAT soundtracks. Literally all of them. Every single one.
Ys Origin
Ys 1 & 2
Xanadu Next
Trails in the Sky
Trails in the Sky

Thanks for the write up! Will give Ys Origins and the first Trails a genuine chans after Xanadu, since I found them in my backlog haha.

Unrelated note but who'd have thought this would turn into a nostradamic documentary?

I'm not into straight horror games, so won't enter but I appreciate your generosity.

RE7 is a great giveaway, thanks a lot.

Makes me feel kind of bad that I only gave away spare bundle keys so far. But I hope I can contribute to more "exciting" giveaways in the very near future :)

Uh oh...
I hated Pillar combat.

It's a bit different but also somewhat similar. Also it seems reviewers hating the combat should try the harder difficulties which change things up in a different way to Pillars

Game Difficulty

Tyranny will ship with four difficulty settings for the game: Story Mode, Normal, Hard, and Path of the Damned. Each of these difficulty settings will affect how challenging combat is with Story Mode being for players who mainly want to experience the story and reactivity of the game. If you watched any of the videos from E3, this is the difficulty setting you saw.

As difficulty increases, we focus more on the AI and tactics of enemies rather than just adding more enemies to each encounter. On harder difficulties enemies will choose targets more effectively as well as use their abilities more frequently and strategically. We also replace some weaker units with more challenging ones at higher difficulties.

Combat was great in PoE anyway, ya'll are crazy.

I'm still shit at CRPG combat - I get my ass kicked at normal difficulty in Pillars with some of the "bosses".

Did Pillars have AI controlled companions? With Tyranny at normal difficulty, AI companions is on by default. When I played Pillars on normal, I didn't have AI companions available to me and did everything myself - probably why I stuggled haha, but that is also the part I like a lot

If this is the case, going Hard mode off the bat may be the way to go, so that I can keep getting my arse kicked

AI did not exist at launch. It wasn't patch in until I think when the first of the expansions launched. So if you played right off the bat then yeah you could easily get wrecked if you weren't microing properly. The AI that eventually came in was pretty good, though. It'll probably be even better in Tyranny as it won't have to worry about per-rest spells.

I have Pillars sitting in my library. Is the combat still very RNG early on, and requiring a shitload of preparation (reading guides online for stat distribution, class choice, etc.) just for characters to even be viable? Wasteland 2 and Divinity (pre-enhanced) were really bad at that.

Maybe on Hard+?

I'd say only really Wasteland actually did what you're suggesting, with the first few levels being pretty brutal. Didn't notice much either way in Divinity and Pillars.
