Considering that was about the last shred you had left... You may as well go out with style, man. It's that or stumbling across a nudist beach full of old people.

according to hltb the dragonfall expansion is actually longer than shadowrun returns, is this true? just looking for confirmation

Spent a little while watching a stream of some folks doing the raid in Destiny and it's a complete shitshow. The developers seem to have learned nothing from 10+ years of MMO raid design. Bullet sponge bosses, almost zero strategy, moment to moment tactics limited to hiding behind cover and shooting and constant deaths, respawns and zerging the boss. There was a time I was actually disappointed that Destiny wasn't coming to PC but now I think they would have been the laughing stock of the community if they had tried to release this pseudo mmo/loothunting shooter in it's current state.

As far as I know, you would need some sort of middle-ware to intercept these chat messages as they're sent to the Steam client. If I had to guess, this sort of communication is done over HTTPS meaning you would also have to decrypt the incoming messages which would likely make the client itself stop working (you wouldn't receive the messages in the client, only in the text file).

There isn't any API (that I'm aware of) available to accomplish this. In all honesty this would be a huge undertaking to accomplish something that could probably be implemented in the client itself (by Valve) pretty easily.

Thanks a lot.

It wouldn't be a thing that concerns me so much except that a bunch of my friends are devs and everything we discuss goes over Steam chat. Including business stuff. The funny thing is that the Steam mobile app holds a bunch of old messages whereas the desktop client doesn't. It even pulls old desktop chats that you can't access on desktop. It's so bizarre.

Pretty much, you hide, shoot, try not to die. Run out of ammo, die, respawn with some ammo. repeat until the boss goes down. Take about 10-15 mins.

It's not that fun.

For you.
Naruto can't be selling that well... Yesterday it wasn't even in the top ten until later in the day.

No in my case at all. It has been constantly on the top 10 the week before release and in the best selling title when it released officially released.

Alien Isolation is a brand new franchise from Creative Assembly in a relatively niche genre. Smash was sold out in Japan within 24 hours.

I can concede that Aliens is an established IP, but for this discussion I chose to label it as a new video game franchise.
I'm... not sure how that works.

I had no idea this was coming out. Absolutely made my day... though I can't in good conscience pay that much given my current Steam backlog and finances, even if I think it's likely worth every penny.

Thanks for the heads up!
Backlog is never an impediment, but if you want it cheaper it's going for about 7 keys IIRC.

Found this post on reddit:

Pretty scummy.
If that's true then holy shit, that sets a really, *really* bad precedent.

JaseC's worst nightmare!!
;)
Jase? More like everyone's. Getting games forcefully removed from your library is not cool at all.

In the old golden days they would have given like 8/9$ :(
True, but they do give nice amounts from time to time. DR3 at least had a decent amount of rewards.

Do you mind explaining what changed to the bad with DR from 2->3 that you say it is only a shell now? I only saw screenshots and some gameplay videos of the third and it looks like mindless fun. I never played any DR before that and with DR2+OTR just having had sales, I thought about picking OTR up once it's >5 bucks.

I'm no Dead Rising expert, but I played the first game, I've watched someone play a decent amount of the second game, and I've been playing the third game (finished the game, and I'm working my way through the DLC episodes), so I can probably answer this question (loooong post ahead).

The most direct way to state it is that they toned down a lot of factors in order to increase the mass market appeal of the series, but in the process, they lost a lot of the "soul" of the series.

Time Limits
The series always had strict time limits in which to accomplish tasks, so you would have a main mission to complete, but also several side missions, all with different timers that they need to be completed before, and you would have to plan a route through the map so that you could get to all of them in the allotted time (prioritizing missions that expire soon obviously). If you took too long to get to a side mission, you would just miss it, and any survivors involved would be dead. If you missed a main mission, you would not be able to see the end of the story in that run, and you would have to start the whole story over (or just reload a save and go faster this time).

In DR3, main missions have no timer at all. There is a time limit to complete the entire story in, but it's extremely generous. It's basically twice the length of the previous games, while the actual content is about the same, if not less. They probably added a ton of time to give more time to hunt for the tons of collectables that are strewn across the map. The side missions do have time limits, but the limits are extremely generous to the point that there is really no time pressure.

Travel
Another change was that in previous games, just making it from one part of the map to another was a challenge in itself, especially with a time limit, and especially when you were escorting survivors. Zombies themselves weren't super dangerous, even in large groups, but when there is just a wall of zombies between yourself and your destination, planning an effective route, and choosing the right tool to plow through zombies without wasting a lot of time was important. You could only save at designated save points, which in some cases meant having to choose between going out of your way and wasting time, or risking the chance that you will mess up and have to reply a larger portion of the game.

With the prevalence of vehicles in this game (there were vehicles in previous games, but they were hard to come by, and they were only in specific locations), it is no longer difficult to get anywhere. The map is more spread apart to account for vehicles, but that just makes it take longer to get somewhere, it doesn't add challenge. You can also save anywhere in the game, so there's really never a risk of losing progress (unless you forget to save).

Side Content
Most of the side content in previous games involved rescuing survivors and killing psychopaths. You would have to find where survivors were holed up, convince them to come with you, and escort them back to the safehouse. Some you had to fight a boss (psychopath) first to rescue them, and others would need something from you before they would follow you (usually like "I'm not leaving here unless you find me a gun"). But the challenge was always escorting them to safety, especially when time pressures demand that you do several side quests in a row, leaving you with up to 8 survivors following you, and they tend to be not very smart when it comes to survival.

In DR3, all of the side missions are dumb fetch quests (some of them give you get survivors from completing, some earn you combo weapon blueprints, and some just give you exp). So you'll go to rescue someone and they'll say "Go collect a bunch of items first" and you'll have to do their mundane task before they'll come with you. But when you complete the task, you get the reward right away, and the person will become a follower (assuming this is one the the quests that gives followers as a reward). So you don't actually have to escort them to safety to get the reward. They can die, but eventually you unlock an ability that revives all dead followers, and anyone who dies from that point on is revived to a safehouse, so there is literally no incentive to keep them safe. On top of that, at every safehouse, you can get any followers to follow you (up to 5 if you upgrade it), and have a gun-toting posse following you around at all times (compared to past games where they would remain in the safehouse). And if you complete a mission while your party is full, the person you rescue just teleports to a safehouse. The psychopaths are just super easy when you have strong combo weapons, especially when you have follower with guns who just unload on the boss while you keep it distracted.

There's also the factor that so many combo weapons are completely overpowered, and because you can pull any weapon you have acquired out of the safehouse lockers, you can always have overpowered weapons all the time (and have spares for your followers as well). Same goes with vehicles and combo vehicles that you can always retrieve from any garage in the city.

I won't even get into the story of the game (because this post is long enough), but suffice it to say it's pretty dumb (some of it intentionally so, most just not well written).

All of that being said, I have enjoyed my time with the game so far, because it is, as you said, mindless fun. A number of the changes they made have made it mostly possible to just tackle the game at my own pace, and have fun with the mechanics. I like an open world game where I can just explore and blow stuff up. But it has also lost most of what made the series special in the first place (even if I never really got into the earlier games).

I'm glad it's at number 1.

I'm just pissed that this game doesn't have a story... I feel like it was falsely misrepresented in the previews. It feels very.... rushed and cheap. Gameplay is still awesome though.
