Well, almost forgot to make some last minute purchases for today, tried to check out and Steam appeared to lock up for a good 2 minutes. Then it finally completed the transaction. Glad I didn't kill the process like Windows suggested. In three minutes the site will rendered unusable for a while.

Valve's making money hand over fist, they need to buy some more fucking servers pronto. This is inexcusable.

To be fair, this is the first sale in which there's been noticeable strain. In this case they clearly underestimated demand.

Valve have recently announced that they're overhauling the network backend of Steam, so hopefully future sales should sail more smoothly.
