Sort of. I was just stating that if there was to be any film that would be on there, again talking about average people, it would be the film whose name was attached to Inception. I actually would be surprised if any of Kon's films were on there if we're talking about greatest films in general without any restriction in genre.
I think the problem here is that you're trying to pigeon box things into a format which is is not worthwhile to the point of the discussion we're having. Like I mentioned before, there is no such thing as an "average person" in an absolute sense. There are people all over who are interested in some things more than other things.
If you go out of your way to poll people who specifically self-identify as "casual movie viewers who don't care about actually discussing a film in depth", that is not the average viewer, that is a specific demographic of casual viewers. Then there is also the question of what purpose you have for doing this in the first place. If you're interested in having an informed opinion of what the "greatest films" are, why would you poll such a demographic? That would not give you an informed answer at all since by their own admission these people don't actually know or care about film as an art form.
If we're talking about "most popular films ever" then there would be no disagreement that Kon would probably not feature on even the Top100. But a lot of directors probably wouldn't either. Directors who are extremely respected, certainly well known to anyone worth a salt when talking about film, but simply don't make populist films for the lowest common denominator masses. So in this case, we wouldn't really be talking about how "well known" a director is, but simply how commercially successful and populist pandering a director is. A completely different discussion.
The fact remains that Satoshi Kon is one of the few Japanese animation directors who have a serious penetration outside of Japan in film circles which matter. He was respected and known, and this helped his films get distribution in places where anime in general don't get much attention.
