And this is why the market fails in the UK. I understand they have costs to cover but in a world where people expect to pay at most £29.99 for a COMPLETE series asking for triple that is a complete joke. And that's the people who buy packs day one. The general public (and if you want to expand the market you want to target the casual consumer) is the kind of person who waits for the sales and let me tell you seeing anime with a blue ribbon price is rarer than a silver slime in Mt. Moon.

Agreed. It doesn't really seem representative of an initiative to expand the market, and instead looks like they are content to simply gauge the existing niche.

I really do want to support the market, but not under these practices.

It'd be a manageable 19 pages if you weren't a 50ppp holdout.

Yeah, but those would be huge pages.

Also, I dislike your usage of "holdout". That implies that there's been some of movement towards 100pp, where as we all know that it's a fairly even split.

I think its more like the companies cannot actually profit at all if they give shows away for 30 bucks a set.
Most of the foreign licensors for anime will say as much if you ask them. I'm no supporter of Japan Price(tm), but I bought VHS and DVDs during the 8-volumes-for-26-episodes days; I'm perfectly willing to pay $60 for a ~13-episode set, especially on BD.

Besides, if it costs too much for you, just go stream it for free. Most of the licensors will post this stuff on their own sites, or leave it up on CR/etc. anyway.

That looks pretty good. I find it funny that there's about one second of actual mecha footage in the whole trailer.

Speaking of which, that design? It's god damn ridiculous. Even the eyelid to the robot is covered in elaborate decoration:

Even knowing that a second season is currently airing I like the way this season wrapped up. Felt kind of End of Evangelion-lite. What really surprised me is how well done the mecha scenes were. Even when CG was used it didn't look that bad.

Good series as a whole. Not high art, but I enjoyed watching it. Especially for Lan.

So you read that New York Times article too?

I just noticed something... incredibly sexist about the Psycho-Pass key visual. Holy crap. I'm kinda... offended even. Notice how all the guys are holding their large oversized guns with just one hand, while both female characters need BOTH HANDS to hold them. Wtf? :(

C'mon now, you're just looking for reasons to complain now. We all know that girls. in Japanese media, cant climb or hold heavy things.

Maturity, bitches.
There are some even worse practise like changing over a tenner for three episodes on a DVD. And then you realise this is Bleach so the grand total for everything is about one billion and that doesn't even include the Heart.

But like I said they are competing with the rest of the store where other television shows are priced for less for the complete package. It's no wonder the anime section is stuck at the back of the store next to the porn where no one wants to be seen in public. The BluRay section is even worse and they get a shelf with the martial arts because they don't deserve their own section.

Its a market held up by the absolute thinnest of margins possible. Its actually fucking scary.

Even so, as consumers, I don't think we should be the ones to bear the brunt of a flawed market.

I agree with you, but the market is what it is, and I'm used to spending to enjoy it.

So, how much longer is this going to take? I feel like it's already been going on for days. I mean, it's fun and all, but there's a limit to how far you can push it the pacing. The animators don't even care about the 'immortal legion' fight scene, it's all stills!

On a more positive note, that looked like some Nakamura animation in the beginning three-way fight scene, which was pretty neat.

Campione! 09

So :3 that actual cats can't match up.

So a no fighting episode, but it still enjoyable due to the new :3 maid and the extremely tsuntsun knight. From writing fanfiction to freaking out over everything, it had good comedy and was enjoyable even though it was harem antics. Maybe it was because the other harem members were too busy being bondage bait to get in the way.

Thank you, Salvatore.

So you read that New York Times article too?

Hadn't seen it before, but I just Googled it. That article was comparing the first seven episodes to Evangelion. It wasn't until the last couple of episodes that I felt any similarity, at least from a visual standpoint, to End of Evangelion in particular.

All the blu-rays in the HMV here are just dumped in one set of blu-rays, so good luck on finding anything!

Anime News Network has posted a brief interview with Eiko Tanaka, founder of Studio 4°C, primarily focusing on the new Berserk movies.

The Berserk films rely heavily on CG for crowd animation; why was this particular technique chosen? Would you like to see STUDIO4℃ work with CG more heavily in the future?

We used CG for the parts where hand-drawn animation was the most difficult to use. We were planning to make all the faces, which are easy to look conspicuous, with hand-drawing and then combine them with CG. I am afraid that there are some parts which we could have done better.

As STUDIO4℃, we will continue to enthusiastically use CG as a tool to aid hand-drawn animation, aiming to produce expressions which cannot be done with only either hand-drawn animation or CG.
He seems dangerously close to admitting that the films look awful. Especially with the whole 'aiming to produce' part. You can aim to produce anything, but the reality of what you end up with is the important thing.

I will agree with part of what he says though - it's impossible to replicate the unique visual look of the Berserk movies without CG.

Hey look, slapping done right! Leave it to BONES to understand the importance of proper physicality and kineticism in their slapping animation.

I have a theory why most people don't actually notice bad/lazy slapping animation. In live action the scene 'cuts' seconds before a hit connects to another person and the next shot will show the reaction from the person who just got his coupled with the audio of hit. Therefore, when an anime does it it's just mimicking live action. In anime, however, you have the freedom to actually show the hit connecting without needing to hide the fact that your actors aren't hitting each other.

On the Eureka Seven news, is it possible that eps 23 and 24 are "just" gag episodes? It doesn't make much sense to me to do things like that, but you never know. I can't believe they'd actually cut two whole episodes of the narrative from the TV broadcast like that...

It happens more than you think -- Code Geass is the most prominent recent example I can think of. If Major Broadcaster X, who runs your show, doesn't have any unbooked airtime you can use to run the show if it gets pre-empted, or in Geass' case has multiple recap episodes because of production issues, there's not a whole lot you can do.

From RACS, a business letter to retailers from the president of Bandai Entertainment:
"I am writing to inform you that Bandai Entertainment Inc is discontinuing its home video publishing and distribution business effective March 1, 2013.

As we methodically wind down the business, the last day that Bandai will be accepting any purchase orders is November 15, 2012, with our last shipments occurring on November 30th, 2012.

On Behalf of Bandai Entertainment Inc, I want to express our gratitude for the opportunity we've had to do business with your company, and I think you in advance for your understanding and assistance during this period."
So basically, if there's anything from Bandai Ent. that you wanted to buy and haven't gotten around to it yet... now's the time before it's too late.

Darn I guess I need to move Gundam Wing up on my list to get, never found out if it was every released on blu ray or dvd.

Hopefully someone gets Seed HD...dont think I aim to get SEED just yet.

I don't know if I should buy Star Driver or not.

At least maybe it'll get rare in the future? Maybe?

You should, its up there for the studios best anime and so worth it on blu ray, great quality.

It happened to both Madoka and Code Geass...

But there are only two Code Geass recap episodes and no extra ones on the DVDs as far as I can see?

I remember with Wolf's Rain and the SARS epidemic we got the OVA episodes thanks to the four recaps in a row, but that made sense to me because the OVAs were announced after the forced hiatus. But we've known E7 Ao is supposed to be 24 episodes for months now. Madoka (which, I think, ran in the same time slot?) was pre-empted for over a month and a half for its final two episodes due to far more unpredictable circumstances than the Olympics - I'm just surprised that there's no contingency plan in place for two episodes of Ao.

To anyone following Moyashimon Returns - how has it been? I haven't bothered watching a single episode after the first one.

I mean, I understand that character animation is layered on top of backgrounds to produce an image. It's something I understand, from a technical stand point. However I should never be able to see it happening in real-time.

Guys, how do you feel about Speed Grapher?

I remember watching a couple of episodes on TV back then, but now I'm thinking of going through it all.
