How much you like Star Driver depends on how well you can tolerate incredibly repetitious formula and cliched stock character types to get to the high-quality mecha animation.

Me, I dropped it after about 10 episodes and then just watched last episode.

Well, I mean, GaoGaiGar was pretty repetitive/formulaic for awhile. Then it got hilariously awesome and didn't stop and they had to make 12 extra episodes to contain the excess awesome that the end of the series could not, does that count?

Star Driver is fine show, its not offensively bad like some in this thread seem thinking.

But its just gave you "indifference" feeling the most, you watch 24 eps and you got nothing aside flash here n there.

I'm DYING to see it in SRW though, just a perfect fit.

How recent is it?

Let me make this clear. I don't think the show is good but it has some good moments. It's a show better watched on Youtube as the best thing about it is the sakuga fights. It's also not a terrible show either.

You missed the great episode around 16 where the action sakuga went off the scale for a little bit with the jetpacks/boosters.

Okay, noted. Watch it for the animation, and not so much the story.

Takuto from Star Driver is a hero in the mold of Basara in that he gives no shits about anything happening in the world around him and just wants to do whatever his schtick is. It makes for annoying viewing because on the one hand stuff is happening in the world but on the other, its whatever shroom induced thing Takuto sees.

Also, related to the plot, one reason the show sucks is that Takuto never loses. A hero who never fails at anything is not interesting.

Exactly. Its not even that he pulls victory from the jaws of defeat everytime or anything like that. They fight and he does random shit and then he wins. WTF

Yeah, all said, just watch GaoGaiGar and Utena at the same time and you'll roughly achieve what Star Driver was trying to do but could never reach.

The worst was the pedophile teacher who actually did have a power that would have beaten Takuto but she lost because
she was ogling him
. And what makes it so dumb is that they could have just let her fight him again but they don't, because reasons.

See, but I haven't seen Macross yet, so this reference doesn't mean much. Macross is sitting next to Getter and Mazinger as "You need to watch these if you want to keep your mecha cred from falling any further." When I finish Turn A and Victory, I'll be shelving all other shows to watch these. I might also watch UC Gundam again, but cut it off at Unicorn. Crossbone is amazing, and F91 has potential, but I'll be damned if I watch Victory twice in the space of a decade. Show isn't cutting it for me at all. Worst UC Gundam bar Stardust Memory.

Also, related to the plot, one reason the show sucks is that Takuto never loses. A hero who never fails at anything is not interesting.

True, but I was okay with Bit Cloud of Zoids New Century, and I think he only lost like, maybe once, and it wasn't a huge deal. But I saw that show as a kid so my judgment there is clouded.

Utena would be an even better show if Utena had used a Hammer Hell on a sun at the end of the series. Just saying.

Moretsu Pirates/Bodacious Space Pirates Episode 26: I do have to say that I am glad this is getting a movie because this finale is rather dissatisfying for a few reasons. First and foremost, this was just an odd point to end the series, trying to throw out these great ponderous questions about the future yet the immediate answer is known and the real answer will not come for a time.
Also, the final boss went down like a bitch, and while the made sense from the perspective of the story. One the recurring marvels that Captain Marika showcases is her cunning and creativity which is used to ensnare and stun lock and down the Grand Cross without much effort. Though it turns out this was a actually some sort of test battle which may be connected to Ironbeard's plans and this mystery queen. See, shit like this is why I always felt that Moretsu Pirates always ended its arcs on a dour note, because they all lacked a sense of closure and indeed that is what we get here. Questions about the future are abound, but Marika has one more year of High School left, who the fuck end a story set in High School at the start of senior year? Also, am I the only one who found it funny that even Kenjo Kurihara was shipping Chacki with Marika.
Anyway, overall this was a decent series marred by a lot of pointless baggage (looking at you High School setting) and some very questionable writing precepts.

Let me put it this way. Takuto is waaaay more annoying than Shinn Asuka and Setsuna F Seiei put together with a big difference. He isn't whiny, he gives no shits and his actions aren't really consistent with the world around him but he ALWAYS wins.

Really the problem is
they wrote themselves into a corner from the very beginning because if he loses even once they lose everything.
It's Bad Plot Devices 101.

It'd be fine if they used the repetition in a meaningful way, but as with most things in Star Driver, it never panned out.

Seriously Show's forgetable, but Tauburn would be so fun in SRW

It wouldn't because that would mean they need to waste 5 stages at least on the freaking Star Driver story. No thanks. I hope it never comes to SRW.

So in the span of three episodes:

  • STAR☆ANIS starts their tour
  • STAR☆ANIS ends their tour
  • Kaede finally gets some screentime
  • Mizuki actually gets some minor character development
  • and even Shion, the forgotten member of the independent idol powerhouse POWA POWA MOTHAFUCKIN' PURIRIN gets yet another episode focusing on her!!!!

This show's on a roll to S2!

Speaking of SRW. FUUUUUCK Ramba Ral in OE. Two turns and he does 5k per turn?! How the fuck is Amuro or Shiro supposed to cope with that shit?

Corpse Party Tortured Souls end

You know, I've always figured I was desensitized to this kind of stuff. I mean, these are just drawings, right? Nothing to get super worked up over. If I can handle guro on a semi-regular basis, I should be able to handle a simple visual novel adaptation, as fucked up as said visual novel was.

Well it's not like this makes me want to cry in a corner after pouring butter all over myself or anything like that, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit disturbed, unsettled, and even a tad upset. The game was already pushing it, but those were static images and there was even occasional patches of optimism. In this, it's all despair all the time, with even more explicit underage torture porn. A lot of things got changed to make it even more depressing and difficult to watch.

The final episode wasn't too bad in that aspect, though they did completely undermine
Yui's death.
In the game, it was
a heroic sacrifice. In this, it was just a random decapitation. That shit is just cruel.

The worst of it came from episode 3, which made me think "man, this is too much for even me." Even ignoring the gory shit in the flashback, what made the episode REALLY hard to watch was
Yuka's death.
It was just so goddamn depressing, only made worse by the voice acting.
The screams, her expression as she slowly lost the energy to cry out, the reaction from Satoshi;
it was all made to be as visually and audibly unpleasant as possible, much more than the game ever was. I seriously wasn't expecting this level of cruelty, which definitely says something when talking about this franchise. Not sure how I feel about it.

It was nice to revisit the story though, even if stuff was cut out (other than tongues) and the death toll was higher than it should have been. So yeah, guess I liked it. Also reminded me that I really need to start Book of Shadows.

I've been thinking about Evangelion Rebuild's weird alternate universe use of the characters in advertising. It's like some Angelic Days version of the Rebuild universe where everyone is happy all the time and selling products like mad.

It's not like he has to stay at DEEN, and he's already worked on Sankarea. And porn. And worst of all, at Shaft.

Well he's already worked with them on 2 projects so there's some kind of connection there and considering he has yet to have a hit will probably hamper his ability to get work with other studios.

Have you ever wanted your own Doraemon? Do you have $1900 burning a hole in your pocket?

Have I got the thing for you

That's a ripoff. It should be a few hundred at most.

If you need to have a hit to get more work as an anime director, no one would have any work. That's not how the industry works! :p

Studios go without a hit for years, I'm just not that worried about Omata's future job prospects.

Hayakeyama A-1 project incoming? :lol

This got me thinking of Nakamura and how he has a bunch of bombs but still gets work. Somebody out there must like him.

Imagining coco & nuts , being tortured and suffering sure sound nice ...but they were so unberable that i think that this wouldn't be a suitable end for them...

Only season of precure where i would have been satisfied if the bad guys won..

Holy hell that's harsh. I thought people were being unreasonable when they hated on Mepple and Mipple, but now we're treating Coco and Nuts like hellspawn? They're nice people, what did they ever do to you?

The only somewhat annoying thing about Coco and Nuts is their voices in mascot form, but they make up for that by spending most of the time in human form anyway. I quite enjoy them as characters
though admittedly a lot of that may come from how adorable it is seeing Nozomi and Komachi swooning over them
.

You already know what i think but i'll say it again anyway... but Gogo is much more bearable BECAUSE they actually made the characters change a little. Sure coco & Nuts are stiill garbage , but they actually gave Nuts some worthy scenes !!( human form only )

Well, if these scenes make even you think Nuts isn't awful, I guess they must be good.

Nuts & komachi was actually a subtle shipping this time ,
milky rose arrived making the anime so crazy
, cure lemonade wasn't changed and is still useless , cure mint actually usefull in battle !! ( Believe it cnet ! ) but still it was overall better , better animated , better movies , better subplots.

Noooooooo don't tone down the shipping the shipping is cuuuuuuute

I am looking forward to Milky Rose though (Milk is wonderful already, anything that makes her more prominent has to be good). And whoever said Cure Mint isn't useful in battle?! For a character whose only abilities are defensive, I thought she's had a pretty good showing. Also she was seriously badass in the last episode I watched. (There was a scene where she stopped a vicious assault from toadbird-woman in its tracks by grabbing her fist with one hand. I was actually going to GIF that scene, but then I figured seven screencaps and two GIFs for the episode was probably enough already =p)

Gogo is what i can call a worthy sequel , going from a 4/10 season to a 7/10 easily.

That sounds promising at least. I was kind of worried that two full series would be a bit much for sticking with the same characters (again), but if GoGo is that much better, I feel a little safer in looking forward to it.

Well I certainly agree that GoGo is a better sequel, although I wouldn't exactly say subtle, more like it stopped existing, but we already know it was established, much like how the NozomixCoco thing pretty much became subtle instead (outside of GoGo movies, which feels like a pent up sexual/creep frustration letting loose).

No! Stop talking about toning down the romance! The romance is cute, dammit! T_T

Well, things got weird enough on the last page or so, probably couldn't hurt to add more Saimoe results.

INABAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN D:

No, I wouldn't actually mind if Sebastian got more exposure to that crowd, but the problem with that is that male characters in Precure hardly ever got exposure, and this has been going on since its inception.

Those layouts and transitions oh god. This episode was gdlk just for those.
Then you have some nice gags and the famous 'NANONANONANONANONANONANO' scene that was cute as hell.
No tsun unfortunately but you can't have it all.
I guess we'll now get Nano at school. Would be interesting.

Yuyushiki was cheated. Damn shame.

Tonight I decided to get in touch with my inner :kurita.

Ace Attorney The Movie

So I've seen it once, but that was last year, and since I'm on an AA kick I figured I'd check it out now that I'm through the first game again. A lot of things have changed, although I'd still call it a fairly faithful and enjoyable adaptation. The most notable alteration for me, really, is the Judge. In the game, the Judge's humor is derived from his incredible idiocy and the ease with which he is badgered by prosecutors. In the film, the Judge is instead incredibly deadpan. He reacts to NOTHING, or rather, his reaction to EVERYTHING is the same bored stare and bored voice. The man looks as if he lets Phoenix get away with things because he's so bored and Phoenix's antics are the definition of amusing.

In terms of casting, I thought they did a good job with Phoenix, Maya, Mia, and von Karma. Manfred really is the gem of the crop, and probably the actual best actor in the movie. Mia was still hot, and I appreciated that they didn't try to pass off an actual lawyer doin' law with her cleavage running practically down her stomach. Maya spends a bit too much of the film being serious, but when she finally does loosen up into the Maya we all know, she's as loveable and cute as ever, and she has some good chemistry with Phoenix. There's an "investigation" scene of the two running around Gourd Lake looking for clues that's really cute and comes off as almost being more of a date than an investigation, really.

As for Phoenix, I really like the guy they got to play him. He really nails the whole loveable but pathetic appeal Wright has going on whilst also managing to switch on badass master planner when things kick into high gear in court. The guy has an adorable smile going on, too. That said, and I realize that for a Phoenix Wright movie it very likely says to do this in the script, but I couldn't shake the feeling that he overacted the "Phoenix is having a mentally stressful moment" to the point where half the time it looked more like he was either taking a crap or blowing a load all over court because he just made these really wacky, over the top facial expressions and well, you kinda have to see it to believe it.

That said, the movie is still pretty good if you've played the games (although I feel that the case conclusions aren't as well explained in the film), and there are a number of good, unforeseen laughs along the way.
