Whomp’s Fortress is lovely - such a brilliant bastard of a level. It’s weird how I never really connected with M64 when I played it on an emulator and yet here I am absolutely having a blast with it.
I do think that the game runs better on the Switch than on a PC emulator - I suspect there’s some Nintendo magic there as it definitely feels sharper. I had the same with Super Mario World too - as wonderful as the open source emulators are there’s no substitute for 1st party.
12 stars in, I’m having fun, even if I do absolutely suck!

Edit to add that this game is causing the foulest and most disgustingly abusive language I’ve used in quite some time.

Crazy. Only took you one day. You should see the speedrunners go berserk in Super Mario 64 lol, so much fun watching those

I know, I tried doing some of the speed running strats myself to varying success...
I wish I was better at movement.
How many times have you completed each of the three games?
Super Mario 64 I've done a few times and %100 the DS game.

Sunshine I've never completed, I could never get past Corona Mountain.

Galaxy was a few times as well with one %100 playthrough not too long ago.

Galaxy is like a different game when you move from the Pro Controller to Joy-Con. I discovered this after attempting Rolling Green Galaxy with a Pro Controller five times.

Is that the one with the ball? I’m using a Pro and I must’ve died there a dozen times. Still felt the same but that level has always been a bitch for me, even with a wiimote.

Meanwhile I aced that manta ray level at 1:03.

Yes, that one. I managed it first time with the Joy-Con. The Pro was fine up to then but I’d probably be playing Sunshine now if I hadn’t made the switch.

I went physical. It’s not as if it’s a big fancy collector’s edition or anything, but I wanted a little something to hang onto from the 35th, from the box to the cart.

I have to agree. I got to try it out yesterday after my niece got a copy of the game, I might need to get it now too. Something about this version on Switch felt more right than anticipated, I agree with the comparison to SMW on the SNES classic. It just feels more cohesive than when you fire it up on an emulator. This feels like the authentic Mario 64, but the cleaned up assets help a LOT. The last game I played with a pro controller was Odyssey, and 64 surprisingly fit like a glove after that, my niece didn't need to adjust to learn the controls at ALL. I have 64 on both N64 and Wii VC, this is the new definitive version for me.

I also sampled Galaxy. I like being able to spin with a button instead of a waggle and the gyro control for the mouse pointer works fine. I tried with a pro controller but next time I'll use joy-con for more natural pointer control. It looks pretty good for a Wii game. Unfortunately you navigate menus with the pointer which is adding an unnecesary barrier for my niece to start the game by herself (she's 7). Especially when every other Mario game you play doesn't work like that, would have appreciated a tweak there.

I still haven't tried Sunshine because I'm still pissed and insulted that I can't play it with the Gamecube controller which they put back into production, released an adapter for, and I bought 4 of. Screw you Nintendo. I'm like pretending it's not even there because it makes me furious.

Physical for me every time I can. No worrying about installing, storage space etc, and I can play it on any device just by bringing the cartridge.

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Super Mario 64 is frustrating tbh, controls and camera are wonky.

Would've been cool if they offered a "DS mode" for 64 so that you could play the minigames again and use the DS-specific characters. That version will probably will be forever trapped on the DS.
It's on the Wii U virtual console so it might make a comeback in the future.

Jolly Roger Bay isn't that bad imo, Plus water level music is usually some of the best music in games.

It’s an abomination. I absolutely detest it. I didn’t like the water levels in Odyssey either.

In other news this penguin is an arsehole.

I went digital on this one. Its dope to replay them all again but 2 things. Really wish they went the Sony remaster route and really upgraded the games. 2, going from galaxy to the other 2 is tough, that 60 fps is hard to lose in a Mario game. Other than that I'm loving these games

I’ve played 64 not all that long ago, but would definitely play it again.
Galaxy wasn’t that long ago either really.

Haven’t played Sunshine since GC days and I love it just as much as any other.

I’m surprised by how good Super Mario 64 looks. It just pops and looks generally awesome. The redone 2D art (like underwater bubbles, for example) is really nice too, given how much the game relies on it.

I can’t wait to play it properly after Sunshine.

For all the criticism of ‘Mah emulator!’, I find the collection quite lovely to look at. I’m also playing in bed, which, good luck with your PC rig, or neck craning laptop.

Maybe it's a glitch since you were jumping? That would be surprising. That's where you exit when you take the shortcut.
I guess I got to close to the exit of the shortcut and the game read it as me taking it?

It would make sense for an early 3D game to simply check if Mario passed a particular boundary, no matter the order or how. Kind of interesting to see how they set that up.

Same here. These games really POP. And seriously, Mario 64 is a miracle. How were they able to get so much right on their first attempt?

It’s ridiculous. Right off the bat, the Mario intro is still the coolest boot-up for a game. There’s a thousand little thoughtful touches, whether it be presentation or gameplay, that top even games today, let alone the brainlet messes others were making in those days.

I honestly think the difference is Miyamoto. This is his second to last major game as director, the last which he also knocked out of the park. As a producer, he’s amazing, but as a director, he’s on some different plane of existence from the rest of the mortals.

For sure. And Tezuka and Koizumi were both assistant directors. Just a dream team of visionary people really.

There's a damn good reason why he's the uncontested GOAT and anyone who disputes that is probably a zoomer.

Don't listen to this poster, developers. Make more of them, they're great.

However this we can agree on. There's a robustness, consistency and responsiveness you just don't get from amateur emulation, no matter how good your rig is. After playing emulated games for a long time it's a shock to go back to the real thing. It just feels so much tighter and more functional.

Absolutely. It's surreal how well it holds up. In fact there aren't many games which can top it for such satisfying movement and control in 3D.

I honestly think the difference is Miyamoto.

As mentioned, Tezuka and Koizumi deserve credit also, particularly Tezuka. He's basically Miyamoto's right hand man and directed or co-directed with him on all of Nintendo's most acclaimed works since the beginning.

Absolutely, crucial parts, but we’ve seen these two by themselves, with less impressive results (excluding Galaxy). I believe Miyamoto to just be something special. That once-in-a-lifetime creative genius that tied everyone together.

We do need to talk about an issue with SMG that has bugged me since the game came out and for me it's kind of a big deal. They brought back the same glitch in a few parts of Odyssey too.

Mario spins out of control sometimes and it sucks. If you're under a certain planetoid just try and run in 1 direction. Or try to walk slowly in a direction. Mario will totally spin out of control or head in a direction you're not intending.


Has anyone else noticed this?

Physical the wave. I usually go digital on games now but with the exclusivity and everything the value for the physical will at least stay pretty high if I want to sell it when I'm done
