Also, I still massively disagree with anyone that says the game is a mix of 64 and Brawl, it feels nothing like 64 in any meaningful way other than the increased throw knockback and decreased DI/SDI.

I'll repeat my theory:

- Owners of both Wii U and 3DS version get characters for free.
- 3DS only owners pay some fixed price for the character pack (let's go with $4.99).

What about people who only own the Wii U version? They get a free pass?

I just strongly disagree with your second prediction. Sakurai isn't going to make fans who only bought the 3DS version pay money to unlock the full roster after he's repeatedly said that the rosters between the two games are equal.

I like the roster a lot. I liked it when it leaked as well, but I will admit this “is it complete?” drama took something out of the experience for me

Anyway, I’m fairly certain there will be no character-based DLC. I think this is the final “now and forever” roster. Here’s why:

1. Sakurai painted himself into a corner by stating each version will remain in parity as it relates to characters. What happens when it’s released? It seems unlikely they’d force you to buy DLC for both (double dipping), but it seems less likely they’d give you both versions for the “price” of one

2. Along these lines, new characters will be much harder to make then a traditional single-console game. Not only will they QA and balance against 50+ characters, but they have to do it twice across 70+ stages and god knows how many modes.

3. Every roster (save for 64) has "blank" spaces and inverted pyramid design. Nothing about the CSS implies additions are coming

4. There appear to be no “hooks” for the DLC, nothing to tease at it. For example, Ice Climber and Rhythm Heaven characters are categorized as “Other”. There appears to be no room for additional franchise stages. Nothing in the credits implies DLC.

5. Finally, consider the characters that are missing. Are they truly hype enough that they’d warrant DLC? Existing characters like Wolf or Ice Climbers, all of which have easily explained reasons for being cut? New longshot characters like Choir Boys? Doesn’t sound likely. All the hype, 3rd party and “WTF?!” characters – all typically prime candidates for DLC – are in the final roster already

I’m willing to take any bet out there. This is it. This is the final roster.

Mario Kart 8 had no signs of DLC until hackers found content that suggested it. And boom out of nowhere Nintendo announced DLC for mario kart 8. I think if there is the DLC the characters are already planned, maybe even already created and balanced. I think it's very possible. They won't contribute to story mode, they will probably be similar to Fire Emblem Awakening's DLC characters where you don't get support conversations but the characters do exist as playable. Why have we not found a Ridley or Dixie Kong trophy laying around in the wild already, for instance?

I don't think Nintendo would force a double purchase. I think it's either a Wii U connect, or buy one get it for BOTH games. That Wii U button on the 3DS menu I find to be of particular interest. Especially with Amiibo allowing you to transfer character data, why do you need the Wii U button to do that as well?

Sorry, but version specific characters aren't going to happen. Sakurai has been explicit and insistent in his message that the rosters between the two versions are identical. He is NOT going to require players to own both versions of the game to unlock all of the characters, as implementing such a concept would result in hundreds of thousands of players not having the ability to play the full roster.

Not going to happen.

A free DLC update for the 3DS when the Wii U version hits is a realistic possibility. It would certainly generate renewed hype for the Wii U version. However, I just don't expect this to happen. I've watched for the past 4 weeks as fans put together some incredibly convincing and elaborate arguments for the "final five"...and what happened? The leak was final. Now, we're on to DLC, and trying to convince ourselves that DLC will give us the final remaining newcomers. I'm not holding out hope.

If, however, it does happen, it will be free DLC for the 3DS. They're NOT going to require fans to own both systems and both copies of the game to unlock the full roster.

I was thinking that this connectivity unlockable is a loophole around that. Technically, if all these characters are unlocked on both games if both systems are connected, then both games DO have the same roster.

Honestly I know money is an issue with these things but that aside why would someone not want both version of this game.

Pretend money isn't an issue, and if you still don't want both, well I think that's pretty odd.

Wii U owners are paying more for their game versus those with the 3DS.

I just realized something In training mode we have a small camera icon, does that mean we can finally record movement and train properly? I've always felt like the ssb training mode was very bare bones.

So after gema unlocked everyone, did she check the lock icon over all star mode? was that it? I know there was that message screen but I want to see if the game still counts DLC characters.

I still can't believe that the dog from Duck Hunt is playable.

I can't.

Now you better believe it! :)

What's up with your avatar, and I'm still waiting for your answer.

So seeing as Mii Fighter was a starter, I wonder why they weren't on the ESRB leak. It was probably the reason the lock was an All star.

Probably because they didn't make Mii Fighter ( or Customization being off)

There's 25 new stages in 3DS from what I see, 24 were new in Melee. There's 34 stages versus 41 in Brawl, which is pretty damn good considering the Wii U version's own unique stages will probably put Smash U/3DS at around 60 new stages. Going off the stage trends, franchises not represented with a new stage in 3DS will likely be represented by one in the Wii U version. If you don't want or aren't getting both versions, then tough luck I guess...
26 new stages in Melee, off by one.

And having a good amount of stage across two less than fully featured versions is not okay--both of them are, as said by Sakurai himself, intended to stand as their own individual Smash experiences. If their stages cannot, then the games cannot, and the mission was a failure.

But even getting both versions and appreciating them both that way is infinitely more cumbersome than having a single, fully featured Smash experience. Playing the Wii U version with friends, but the stage roster isn't that great? Don't worry, the 3DS version has you covered! Everyone, bust out their 3DS's, we want to play on the Balloon Fight stage! Whoops, not everyone has a 3DS here, and those who do may not have it unlocked.

Saying "Well, there's two Smash Bros. games this time, so if you add them together you get one complete one!" is a pretty bad copout.

Maybe there will be a later game update that will patch in DLC support. Didn't that happen with Pikmin 3 or am I misremembering?

No more lock and the icon for it now features unlockables like Game and Watch and ROB.

ESRB must have been from a different save, as someone else never bothered to unlock Mii and they still unlocked full All Star.

Nope, that just changes the camera mode to zoom in on yourself.

Good luck trying to practice stuff like projectile reflecting or testing interactions with specific moves.

Can you even get a player-controlled AI on the 3DS version seeing as you obviously can't use multiple controllers.

Did Gema play through all-star after unlocking all characters? Really curious if anything special happens. The doors in that mode look so Tabuuy. It's weird to me that he's not in this game. Master Core is much better, though.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
Wait, so are all the Stages unlocked?

There did seem to be one space left in the ESRB Leak..

Also, I'm interested in what characters are COMPLETELY absent in terms of costumes/Trophies. Like if Ridley is literally nowhere to be seen, I'd be suspicious, same with IC and Lucas.

Man I feel bad for you then

Again, though, what if you're one of the millions of 3DS owners that doesn't own a Wii U? There are over 45 million 3DS owners, and under 8 million Wii U owners.

Sure, Sakurai could lock any possible remaining newcomers in the 3DS version until they were unlocked via a connection with the Wii U. Technically, he would be correct in that both games "contained" the full roster.

That would be such an incredibly pathetic and low move though. It would result in MILLIONS of Smash 3DS owners not having the opportunity to play the entire roster.

It's just not going to happen.
