lol.

How can it have the worst roster when it has a ton more characters. Some people, I swear.

I mean, I'm upset that my most wanted, The Witch from The Witch's House didn't get in too but I'm not gonna cry about t like that Eskimo guy that lost his mind.

By most wanted I mean of unconfirmed characters. My most wanted was Lucina, so I got what I wanted mwahaha...well really my most wanted was Palutena but I never fathomed the idea of her not being in lol.

Just to put things into perspective of why I'm disappointed with the roster.

DK only has two characters despite the series being in every Smash and every other major Nintendo franchise has at least three characters (Not counting clones).

Metroid still only has one character despite being in since the start and being quite popular. They clearly knew Dark Samus would work as a character, so it baffles me why she was an AT.

Awakening got 2 characters even though it's a shit game.

6 unique characters from Brawl were cut. I consider that a major loss. If it was just one or two I could accept it.

Ganondorf is still a clone.

There is NO reason for this, considering Bowser got a rework.

Roster grade: 9/10

I really wish I could give it the full 10 points, but losing a whole series like Ice Climbers is so unfortunate. And this is coming from someone who has Ice Climbers listed as their least used character in Brawl.

I like most of the roster, but there's some disappointment. Dark Pit and Dr. Mario should have just been alternate costumes, and I would have liked for Mewtwo, Lucas, Ice Climbers and Wolf to return. Duck Hunt Dog is just a little too out there, especially with so many oddball choices already in the roster like WFT, Villager, and ROB, and I just hate Bowser Jr, which is why I'm glad you can swap him for the Koopalings.

I don't hate the roster at all. It's filled with plenty of amazing choices, it's just the last few reveals have been disappointing compared to Robin & Lucina, Megaman, and Little Mac.

I'll wait for the Wii U version before I pass judgement.

Also 25m gets a reference in the Pictochat stage if you didn't know.

Oh cool, I saw someone mention it but I wasn't sure if they meant the Brawl Stage was back.

My dream Wii U Stage is 25M, but re-done in full 3D and taking place in an actual city, like that one SSFIV level. And the signs in the background reference "Stanley's Extermination Service" and "Mario Toy Company".

It will never happen. :(

Funny thing is: I really like Wolf as a character and wanted him playable in Brawl, but I'm not upset he is gone. He played terribly in my opinion. Used Falco way more.

In a way, it's a shame Smash as become such a huge game. They can't really keep any awesome new secret characters a secret anymore, considering how much of a draw a new character is. Back in the day Mac, Shulk, Greninja, Pac Man etc may all well of been hidden away till the games release.

Arguments about the "most deserving" characters always end up as "I think this franchise/character is more important to Nintendo's history than this other character." It's all about each individual's perception.

Yep. Honestly, I bet people would've been shitting on Melee's newcomers a ton if the internet had been more of a thing back then as well. I think having so much information and love for certain series has led us to become so attached that we aren't willing to give new or different things a chance

Pretty much satisfied with the roster. I got Robin with Anna colours which is pretty much the greatest thing I could ask for, short of Anna herself, and I was always bad at spacing, so Lucina sounds like she might be more my speed!

If we were to get another stage from the arcade Donkey Kong, I want it to be 50m. I love that pie factory.

No he isn't, he's literally a laugh that people found annoying because they suck at light gun games as a kid that became an internet meme over the years.

I don't like the character, I never liked his game, I don't like his inclusion over other characters that I do like. Just because Sakurai made him unique does not mean I have to like him, or think he's a good inclusion
Your a bad person. DH is without a doubt the most deserving new NES rep atleast. :(

And you mean to tell me that while Dialga and whoever else was on the Spear Pillar stage flipping the stage upside down or inverting controls is not as intrusive or centering the gameplay around that stage hazard, than a "stage hazard boss character" behaving like an actual boss?

If Ridley's role as a boss is literally doing nothing but occasionally grab players, I'd rather not have any Ridley at all. Not even as trophy.
I already said that Spear Pillar was an annoying stage because that stuff was too intrusive. I like stage hazards, but not when they are that in your face. The ones I listed from the new game are worse because they cover half or more of the stage in damaging obstacles.

If Ridley is a stage hazard I figure he'll appear randomly and attack the stage, maybe follow a particular player, then leave. Kinda like the find mii stage.

Lucas and Ice Climbers are the only two that I hate to see go. Snake was cool too but I can accept him being a one-time character.

So I'd give it 8/10.

I'm actually upset he's gone, but yeah, I never really got the hang of his aerial to ground transitions with his moves, mainly due to the fact he's the only character without a fastfall (thus making him play pretty awkwardly for me). Falco has always been my favorite of the Star Fox character.

Speaking of, I don't like his new dark color. I liked the brown coat way better than the new black one. :/

I have to wonder why Smash has a different roster every game and doesn't just build on the roster like other fighters seem to do.

Other fighters ALMOST ALWAYS swap out/lose characters. There's a reason people to this day are still clamoring for the likes of R. Mika and Karin.

Hell, look at Guilty Gear Xrd. I'm still waiting for Baiken and Jam, if they're even going to happen.

I'm fairly excited about the roster. The cuts, aside from Snake, aren't a huge deal to me, and since Snake's chances were sort of fleeting anyway, I'll survive. I'm also salty about Dark Pit, but again, I'll live.

We're still looking at a game with Mega Man, Pac Man, Shulk and Duck Hunt Dog, all of which are crazy awesome.

I still have hope for there being at least 1 more character that we don't know about. Maybe when the Wii U version is released, and the new characters can be added to the 3ds version with an update or something like that

Uh, but it does build on the roster like other fighters do, and other fighting games also cut characters.
As a matter of fact, a big source of criticism for the Street Fighter 3 series was that they discarded almost all of the SF2 cast.

There's plenty of characters that got dropped and/or brought back over the course of the Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat, Guilt Gear and Marvel vs Capcom series.

Smash Bros. has had the same original 12 characters in each iteration, and only a handful characters have been dropped going from Melee to Brawl, and from Brawl to 4.

I just don't get the Ridley thing. It's nice to want things, but there are several new unique characters added. Why do people get so butt frustrated when they don't get their specific way? It's a video game!

And why are people always blaming Sakurai?? He sure as shit isn't the only one that has a say in the roster choices.

The game. Im curious? what made you don't like the game itself.

Personally these are the things that make me worry about what the future of the game is going to turn like and whether or not it's worth sticking with for a long period of time instead of just staying on Project M, everything else in the game outside of the mechanics I'm completely fine with, especially the custom moves.

-No shieldstun or shield damage, low shield degradation and a fast recharge rate means that shields are a pretty powerful option, there's not really a point in approaching someone with many of your moves because you'll end up at a frame disadvantage and get punished for attacking, better to just abuse projectiles and wait for the other player to make mistakes. Promotes a playstyle I don't particularly find fun or interesting.

-Highly spammable rolls and a lack of dash dancing means that tech chasing is almost non-existent, which was always something I found really fun in previous games, trying to read where the other guy will roll and being able to extend the combo if done correctly was a great feeling, but the window you're allowed to be able to do this in is massively reduced.

-Multiple air dodges/very little time between air dodges, I do not like smash 4's air dodge system at all, it requires you to put practically no thought into air dodging whatsoever other than "maybe don't do it near the ground, I might get punished", makes recovering super easy (which factors into my next point) and juggling practically non-existent.

-Characters live for ages, the mixture of massive blast zones, floaty physics, multiple air dodges and the new ledge mechanics make it super easy and safe to return to the stage, in competitive smash a comeback usually comes around due to a good edge guard, I don't see that happening very often with two good players, which I don't find particularly interesting.

-Certain moves still have questionable design, I don't like it when moves are practically useless, Mario's FLUDD is a move that shouldn't exist in it's current form, Megaman's Leaf Shield shouldn't exist in it's current form, Mario's dash attack is an incredibly unsafe move due to high endlag but you get nothing for actually hitting someone with it because the end lag is too large for any followup and so every other grounded option he has is better and you should be using one of them instead of that move.

-Techable grounded Meteor smashes/Spikes. In previous smash games it would instantly pop them up in the air if they were on the ground when you meteor'd them, but in this game it must apply some amount of downwards knockback first, meaning that a character can tech it instantly without moving off the spot and punish you (due to meteor attacks generally having high lag) just for successfully hitting them, I've been in sudden death before and hit a CPU with Mario's Fair, but they just instantly teched it and hit me with their own Fair whilst Mario was still recovering from the move, it's ridiculous that the game lets you do that and it limits a players options.

-In terms of general physics, I've never liked that momentum conversation stopped being a thing after melee, Smash is supposed to be a physics-based platform fighter, right? Any other platformer that had physics where your jump distance was exactly the same regardless of whether you were running or not would be considered stiff and I'm not sure why it's something that people apparently don't notice in Smash.

I'm interested in seeing what the game is like when playing with actual people, but these things are all part of the game and I can only imagine the game will become less interesting as people get better at it, because they won't be doing the risky, more fun stuff and will just generally be trying to exploit the powerful defensive options, which has never been what I've wanted out of Smash, as a 64, Melee and Project M fan.

For me the fact that custom moves exist is infinitely more interesting to me from a competitive standpoint than the base game mechanics, just because they're something new and interesting to me whereas the base mechanics have got a bit of a "Oh, here we go again" feeling to them.

I mean, I really do hope I'm wrong, I'd love to be able to starting working on improving at the new game but based on what's there at a base level I don't know if I'll be enjoying the game 2-3 months after the WiiU version releases, it's very possible that I'll have lost interest and gone back to PM as my main game.

Falcondorf isn't new. That's more a strike against melee tbh. Wii Fit Trainer honestly did deserve the slot (more than Ridley tbh given that her game did more than any metroid ever did). Duck Hunt Dog is honestly a pick in this game than Ice Climbers was in melee (seriously, did anyone even like the Ice Climbers game)? I agree that I'd like Mewtwo back and less cuts. And pretty much all the biggest characters were already in.

Also, curious about how many people who complained about this also said the exact same things about Brawl and just got used to that after a while

I'm talking the smash 4 roster as a whole not just newcomers, I can excuse falcondorf in melee because he was a last minute rush clone. I found it disappointing in Brawl and absolutely inexcusable in smash 4. Each game ganondorf remains a falcon clone the more it'll bother me.

Wii Fit Trainer is a super bizarre choice, yes Wii Fit sold a stupid amount of copies, but the trainer herself isn't at all what I'd call iconic and I think its safe to say the vast majority of the audience that bought Wii fit is not the same audience that is interested in Smash Bros. The only think about WFT I like is that Sakurai used her reveal trailer to troll the shit out of gaming journalist and we got a super salty rant from Dorito's Pope on it

The only character I'm a little disappointed about is Mr. Game & Watch, he looks really... off, compared to his look from Melee and Brawl. Everyone else is great though, can't wait to finally get my hands on Villager/Pac-Man/Duck Hunt.

Some people didn't get any of the characters they wanted. When you've wanted characters in for 13 years, you tend to get mad when it doesn't happen.

Remember when people thought the reason DHD was absent from the ESRB leak besides the CSS was because he didn't have anything "objectionable" about him?

Funny now, since we can see his moveset involves summoning an entire firing squad with realistic (sprite) guns to spray the foe with bullets.

As much as I love DHD, not going to lie I would've loved to have Wild Gunman in as his own character. In fact now I wish the whole newcomer roster was made up of repurposed NES characters.

9/10 for the roster.

Has some awesome new characters and a bunch of diversity between (most) of them. I honestly feel like there's a character in this game to appeal to everyone.

My only gripe is that Ice Climbers and Snake are gone. Hopefully dlc can bring them back

Still the length in time from TRS and brawl was pretty big. Plus brawl even had mgs4 material In it. Which Nintendo knew they weren't getting. Which is why I feel the history angle everyone uses for the characters just doesn't apply to snake nor his releases. It was more than sakurai who could approve that inclusion and they did.

I mean there's also a lot of behind the scenes things to consider. If I remember correctly Snake was only included as a favor anyway. It was definitely a very strange situation. Though honestly I was one of the people who had no faith in snake being back. The second they announced the game I figured he'd be gone.

Also if I remember correctly Brawl and twin snakes were being developed at the same time for awhile.

It's just how things work in the end - the guy at the forefront is going to take all that heat, even if the decisions aren't entirely his. :p

He is... the Company Blast Shield (CBS).

All this talk about Kid Icarus having too many reps sounds very similar to what people were saying about StarFox in Brawl.

I wonder what franchise will be the focus of people's wrath when Smash 6's roster gets revealed.
I don't think it has too many reps. I just think one of the reps is a boring choice.
