Switch 2 Display Tested. Afterimage is due to "incredibly slow" response time

"Your expectations are just too high"

"It's aimed at kids and families and is a secondary console for PS5 owners, it's good enough for that purpose"

"What, did you want Switch 2 to cost over 1000 dollars?"

"It looks fine to me, I'm so glad I don't have a stick up my ass like you guys"

"It's primarily a console, the portable mode is just a secondary feature"

"You guys are a bunch of pathetic nerds for caring about this stuff"

"It's not going to hurt sales"

Any other cope I'm missing?

You forgot me, post 191.

Do we know if there are different Display batches or are all Switch 2 owners screwed?
I still remember the IPS/TN 3DS lottery ...

Anything that can or could be fixed by an update or is the display hardware really that bad?

Well one users notice the money coming out of their wallets when they pay and yes they do notice when they see the colours a bit more washed out than they should (especially if they try to turn HDR off and see how the display performs).

The numbers are quoted because it is not subjective but there is quantitative metrics that explain why the colours in games that do use HDR would appear more washed out than they should unless you turn HDR off. Some people have trouble admitting the display should be in no metrics worse than the OG Switch model especially despite the price increase.
Then again some people with the OG PSP did not initially think there was an issue with the LCD either.
I believe the price increase is a non issue and pointless to bring up everytime.
As other users pointed out, this was not a problem at the events before people could benchmark the hardware, you could argue it wasn't a problem or noticeable until it was pointed out.
It's the same as DF where people suddenly are starting to have problems with games after they use their 400x zoom analysis.

And you're right that the numbers are not subjective but the experience is, that's why i said i feel sorry for the people that notice this and have to complain in every thread about it.
Not saying they aren't right just that it isn't the problem some are making it look like.

Do we have marketshare figures for the OLED model?

I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of Switch owners give a toss about the screen.

My daughter plays our Switch in handheld, I on the other hand have only ever used it on the TV.

are you kidding, last two pages it quickly got the point of

"at least it turns on and shows stuff"

iPad has a 120 Hz OLED with variable refresh rate and real strong HDR at up to 12.9'' in size, so does the iPhone (both at a muuuuch higher pixel density too), likely many Android phones do too…

Then again HDR in the current Switch 2 screen does not really work (making colours more washed out) and most games right now do not have VRR working (not even supported in TV mode), and 120 Hz for a gaming handheld is a good specs sheet number but with the kind of ghosting the screen has it is not that important unfortunately…
Some posters bring up this disingenuous shitpost everytime you contrast the S2 display versus cheap OLED smartphone displays that easily do 1000nits+ at 120 Hz and beyond (where can we find this 7.9" 1080p/120 Hz OLED display?). My cheap as chips motorola phone (<250$) has a 6.4" OLED display with 3000 nits peak brightness and 1Hz-120Hz LTPO response.

Unless you are a cheap ass penny pincher (like Nintendo), you will just comission a stencil for whatever screen size and resolution you need. OLED screens are printed roll to roll not fabricated on Si like Micro LEDs, the process is very flexible with regards to size and resolution. That is literally how Motorola got their 6.4" screen that will sell less than 5 million worldwide and is not a common screen size for phones. If they can afford it, I am sure cheap ass companies sitting on mountains of cash who will sell more in one month than Motorola will sell in a liftetime can afford it. But why would they, when people will eat up the cheap slop served and act as if it is the second coming of Christ, while crusading against anybody calling out these cheap practices.

Switch 2 OLED is a beast!

💰 The Nintendo Switch 2 OLED may cost around $499.99, possibly exceeding $500 due to rising electronics prices

📆 It's expected to release in 2029, aligning with Nintendo's last upgrade release cycle

👀 Likely improvements include an OLED display, increased storage (up to 512GB), and enhanced battery life

👍 The console may feature better HDR in handheld mode, while maintaining a screen size close to 8 inches for ergonomic reasons

It's-a me, Mario I hear when starting up Mario Kart World......sigh I'm so disappointed. I was expecting a lot from the new Switch 2, but what I'm seeing is just terrible. wipes away tears The graphics are all blurry and ghosty, like someone poured some bad mushroom soup all over the screen. And it's not just the graphics and ghosting, it's the price too! looks up at the floating dollar bills Nintendo is making. All that money Nintendo is making, just floating away like it's nothing. (smh)

I mean, I've seen better graphics on my old NES. And that thing is ancient! chuckles sadly I thought Nintendo was better than this. I thought they cared about their fans, about making great games and great consoles. But I guess I was wrong. (smh)

And Mario Kart, my favorite game! looks at the screen It's like they took all the fun and excitement out of it and replaced it with a lower quality screen than even the launch Switch 1. Shakes head I don't know how they expected anyone to enjoy playing on this thing.

Looks down, scuffing the floor with his shoe I'm just so disappointed. I thought the Switch 2 was going to be the best thing since sliced bread, but it's just a fancy paperweight. kicks at the floor And all that money! watches as the dollar bills continue to float down It's like Nintendo just laughing at us, taking our hard earned coins and giving us nothing in return.

Sighs, looking up at the screen again I guess I'll a just have to stick with my old Switch. At least that thing works properly. But I'm a still hoping that Nintendo will come to their senses and fix this mess or at leasr give us a more expensive OLED model with the dock still lacking vrr. wipes away more tears Until then, I'm just going to have to sit here and cry about how much money I wasted on this.......this Nintendo Switch 2 thing. Atleast I still have my Switch 1 my wife's boyfriend bought me and the OLED model I got from my ex-girlfriend's girlfriend.

That switch 2.1 is looking more and more like the better option.

Glad I'm deciding to wait till a revision and a better library, then jumping in day 1...

It's the first console I have done that with, and I am having very little to no FOMO.

So not the Switch 2 size and like I said they don't exist.
iPad not only bigger (and way to big) but also much more money.

Double standards.. imagine if this was from Sony or X box…

Posting a summary of findings is double standards? I'd do the same if it were Sony or Microsoft my man.

I've finished two Metro games and Doom, playing about 90% of that time portably. I didn't notice it, but I don't think those are the best games to test this.

I have gotten used to this on neogaf by now. I enjoy playing a game on my console of choice, comes to neogaf and there are threads telling me that what I enjoy is shit, shiiiitt...

Would you rather NeoGAF stick their head in the sand and pretend this stuff isn't real?

What's funny is how you get called an xbox , a sony or a nintendo fanboy depending on the thread, a bit like HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 because you can't criticize a brand without being called fanboy by some.No matter how much you like said brand by the way either you pick a brand and be a yesman to each and every bullshit they produce or you become the fanboy of other brands. Be a fanboy of our brands or be the fanboys of others , there's no inbetween.

Is it possible that they use a few different displays? Like the PS5 fan lottery etc. Could explain why some say it has the worst ghosting in modern times while others don't see it.

It depends on the person. I'm sure technically it is there. Just like with 30 and 60, even though the difference is huge, some don't see it.

HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 gets more of that stuff than I do, but yeah, it is weird especially when it comes out of nowhere like this.

I think it is primarily the types of games people are playing. I'm playing Botw and I don't see it. Seems fine so far. I imagine it will happen at some point. Good thing we know about it now or I and others might think our screens have become defective over time.

GL finding a OLED that size 1080p@120hz

Not Switch 2's screen size and not with g-sync.

Nice defense of the Billion dollar corporation. Motorola edge 50 neo, which costs 250$ has a 6.4" LTPO OLED screen (res>1080p, framerate can be varied freely between 1Hz and 120 Hz). The Motrola device will be lucky to sell more than 5 million and the screen size is not used by any other manufacturer.
The size and resolution are arbitrary, since OLEDs are printed roll to roll. Considering the amount of Switch 2's that Nintendo will end up selling making a stencil for the size and resolution they desire would cost peanuts.

Some people have a tendancy to be too manichean on things they are attached to.It's a "you're with us or against us" mentality, when in reality most people live in the grey area of "I like this but I know it is not perfect", that's usually the ones that have constructive criticism and most often genuine interesting debate with people that have different opinions.

Pretty much. Tribalism at work. Some folks are acting like this threads like these ruin their gaming experience somehow. Hell....I posted this thread and then went right back to playing Zelda on Switch 2. I don't see the problem.

and some people are more sensitive to some issues than others, I know my girlfriend can't barely notice screen tearing when to me it pops out like a fucking jack in a box.

Its amazing what does seem to bother others

The celebrations when that thread popped up that Xbox was "canceled"

I have seen a couple of people say they enjoy a game more when they know other platforms can not play it

Honestly no matter what else people say the majority of those people are children both age wise and mental capacity wise

Sadly Xbox has always fostered the worst of the worst with people like Jezz and Tom Warren having platforms which to take shots at others

I digress

I believe the price increase is a non issue and pointless to bring up everytime.
Price is part of the context, when PS3 did it, when XBox did, or even certain consoles in the 90ies - it was memed to hell and back because the market responded poorly to it.
If this time it's a non-issue because market's fine with the price, it'll die out soon - but only time can tell that.

As other users pointed out, this was not a problem at the events before people could benchmark the hardware
The 'it works for me' defense force was/is there for every consumer electronic product ever. Even the Virtual Boy. But when everything is 'subjective' there's nothing left to discuss, positive or not.

Tim theorizes the Switch 2 display is so slow because there's no overdrive. Overdrive forces a higher response time out of the display, but it requires a high voltage current delivered to the panel, which would impact the Switch 2 battery life, but is otherwise fine on a desktop monitor.

Look at the average response time with overdrive, 4.94 ms.

CmRw1ig.png

Without overdrive, it doubles (9.40 ms) or is half the speed or twice as slow. The average dark level, especially, takes a beating, so this explains why there's so much blur and lack of motion clarity when fast movements are on screen.

That's true and the only place i see people complaining about the price is this forum.
I do realise the people and parents i speak to is also anecdotal but nobody talks about the price.

What i was talking about is that nobody had issues at the events and they were even complimented about the display while not being an oled still having great visuals.
Now the hardware is out and people can benchmark it seeing lower numbers than expected suddenly it's a problem.
I don't agree with that way of thinking, i also said i don't see/experience the issues people are having, call me an apologist but why should i pick up the pitchfork if i don't have any issues?

Not an excuse, Nintendo could have aimed for lower process node, larger battery capacity...etc

But they chose to be CHEAP period

You can also add "I was enjoying it until someone on the internet told me it's shit, and now I want to throw up on it"

What if the demo stations before release had overdrive turned on?
It's a conspiracy I know but it's enough for me to definitely return my S2 for a refund.
Nintendo should not be rewarded for this kind of behaviour.

It's easy for me to compare my Year 1 Switch 1 LCD side by side with my Switch 2 and see that motion is better on the Switch 1 screen

You just need to run something with fast motion like Mario Kart 8 on both handhelds at once to immediately see the difference

The color temperature is better on the Switch 1 screen too, with the Switch 2 screen too cool and far away from D65k
