Switch 2 Display Tested. Afterimage is due to "incredibly slow" response time

Pathetic part is that to actually put a decent quality LCD screen on it would have cost them a pittance with the bulk buy, multi year supply deal they could negotiate.

...but no. A $15bn cash pile just isn't enough for this corporate vampire being kept on top by their slave army of familiars, who'll keep on buying their slop.

They probably could have gotten a much better LCD for like $5 per unit with the scales they are getting.

But this is Nintendo.

So, this is not the IGZO display Sharp said that was going into production for a game console?

Igzo-03.jpg

Could it be the second screen sold separately rumor is true?

a lot more reports about different panels in circulation. The warmer colour temp panels don't seem to have the extreme pixel response time issue that the cooler ones do. Wonder if the manufacturing origin factored in as we know the US got the ones made in Korea.

I seem to have gotten lucky, as there is very little ghosting and motion blur on mine. Have tested many of the "problem" games, and they look great to me outside of pokemon scarlet which is definitely using that shitty stripped down dlss version (cyberpunk uses the higher quality one).

regardless, panel lotteries are horseshit and for a 450$ console there should have been better quality control. Feel bad for anyone who got a shit display.

Would be interesting to know what panel you're likely to get depending on where you buy the console. I don't have one yet, but once I do get one I'll most likely be ordering it from Germany (I'm in Sweden, but it's about €150 more expensive here compared to importing from an EU country outside the Nordics).

Between the screen , the shitty GameCube emulation and the lack of decent exclusive games for now... Ya I'm not nearly in any way sold on the switch 2.

I will happily wait until the upgrade model if even then.

17ms on LCD? Dayum.
Instead of making it a nothing gate, criticize the multi billion company to fix this for the rest that care, it will only benefit you too guys.
This is my main issue with the response. Fine, if you don't notice it but don't defend it. That's why Nintendo had the cheapest screen they could find. It may not be the most high end device out there but its not cheap. The measurements are similar to the Chinese knock offs. Same goes for the HDR situation which is worse. Its like buying a car that claims it can do 100 mph and it can only do 70 mph. I am sure many will say that's enough but its not what was advertised, and what incentive would a company have to follow through on claims if people defend it when it doesn't.

Yeah this is exactly why I kept my OLED Switch along with storage issues. I knew Switch 2 wouldn't compare but when I actually tried it and saw the ghosting I was astonished. I haven't seen ghosting like this for 20 years. People raving about it saying how good it looks was the other half of my astonishment. This thing is for the TV until they make an improved version but it's clear to me that will require better battery as well. With the way the economy is going I think it will take at least 4 years.

If the Nintendo fan boys cant see through this, then they never will. Companies will always test the waters and see how much they can get away with, but this one of the most corpo greed practices Ive seen from a gaming company; trying to retain high profit margins by charging more money for a device and games, when one of the most important components is even worse than what the last system had? Nintendo needs to be humbled, but judging by 3M sales in a few days, chances are they wont.

Theres no way you guys who bought a Switch 2 didnt notice this.

Cracking Up Lol GIF

I have the Switch 1 LCD and the OLED, but I'm damn happy I skipped this guy. There are folks right now with little Japanese men from Nintendo on ladders, standing behind them going to town with no lube.

Cheaped out to sell a double dip. Hell, they may even update the LCD first and resell it.

The amount of people in this thread who only plays the S2 in docked mode is amazing. Makes me think that Nintendo could launch a screenless switch that operates solely in docked mode. Not sure if that idea would catch on.
It wouldn't, because GAF isn't representative of the majority of gamers. Nintendo has their own data which shows over 80% of Switch players play handheld or tabletop

This is why Nintendo made a Switch Lite but not a Switch TV

As a Finn, I share your pain. And I don't get it. Sure, the VAT is higher commonly in the Nordics (especially here, thanks our current government, but I digress), but it's not non-existent in countries like Germany?

19% VAT here in Germany.
25.5% here. Still doesn't explain the price disparity.

This is the general VAT, there are some special/lower VAT rates for things like groceries. It used to be 24, but our current government decided to raise it because of course they did. What was especially nice is that some older POS systems (POS POS systems?) were unable to handle VAT having decimals.

Haha, sounds like a uniquely German problem. Good to hear we're not the only ones with such a technological lag.

I remember reading that the Nordics distributor is charging about 100€ on top of every Switch 2 unit and found this Reddit post:

Bergsala, the distributor for Nintendo in the Nordics is scalping the Switch 2 by about 100€

Motion blur destroys everything for me. As a sides roller fan, this is something I can't accept.

Definitely wait till they update the screen. No need for a oled. But clarity when things move is a must!

No room for debating this. All games containing moving objects. This is elementary for gaming. The other shit like hdr, for example is not that important. This screen can run, but not walk. The basics were ignored by Nintendo.

Oh yes. "German efficiency" is a mythical thing, and in my experience, quite a myth. During the turn of the millennium, I used to work in Germany for what probably is the largest retailer of musical instruments/stage tech/etc in Europe. And... all the orders were printed out using a dot matrix printer. Using copy paper, so one copy for the shipping to actually collect and ship the order, and the other for archiving the order. There were walls of cabinets holding those, across multiple years. This is no longer the case thankfully, but even back then my initial reaction was utter disbelief.

Serious question : I never understood the "tabletop" mode, what's it for exactly ? If I'm playing in hand-held mode and there's a table near me, I can just position my elbows on top of it as to not put strain on my arms but "tabletop" mode ? why have a tiny screen sit further away from me while holding the joycons in hand ? I really don't get it 🤔

I often use tabletop mode just on my lap on the couch because then I don't have to hold it which can be more comfortable for me, and I can use the joycons separated from the screen which I find to be better when I play games that use gyro aim.

Feels like a lot of the current issues can be fixed if Nintendo just forces the screen to always run at 120hz and turn on the overdrive setting. Can't this just be patched in?

No, that's not it. German VAT is 19%, Swedish 25%. Taking that into account, the German price of €509 becomes €535 (which is what you can buy it for directly from Nintendo Germany). But in Sweden the price is somehow €679. It's either Bergsala pocketing the difference or a pricing cartel.

1- I am not sure how much of a battery impact the overdrive will have on battery, but I am not expecting more than 6 to 8% if the screen is actually can accept firmware and not some old
Shit that can't be upgraded ( which , coming from Nintendo is a big possibility )

2- I really think people are blowing this way too much. I am still enjoying the screen way more than switch 1 screen and I am not really noticing the ghosting or smearing ( at least in the games I played like bayonetta 3 Mario kart world and fast fusion . And I am very ocd when it comes to screen and light bleed dead pixels smearing etc. I am not seeing any sort of ghosting at all which kinda brings me to the third point.

3- are all units affected by this ? What are the chances of multiple manufacturers of the screen and one of them ( the one produced the most screens ) fucked up ? Because like I said I am not seeing this on my screen. Some people
Didn't notice it either. Now it could be just that our eyes are not as good . But there is also the chance it's just not everyone has this problem ?

Same experience. Most I don't think people talking about this shortcomings haven't tried the thing itself.

Its pretty much a case of "puta thing under microscope, discover microscopic thing"

I:m also enjoying the console and the screen looks great to me, and I come from a steam deck oled. And of course for me it looks better than the original switch screen, the colors look deeper and the sharpness of the 1080p is appreciated along with the extra screen size.

The mass psychosis over the screen 'issue' is what the internet is all about.
Hyperbolic a bit? The screen is objectively and measurably bad. Don't try to brand it as "mass psychosis" because your favorite brand is getting criticized. People paid a lot of money for the device and if they're unhappy with it's performance, they're free to express that dissatisfaction.

If it's not a problem for you, why are you in this thread?

Its poor response times don't make it a bad screen overall. In fact, its color quality is much better than the Steam Deck LCD, and there's no bleeding. The rest of the specs are on par with a good IPS panel.

Of course, it could be better with local dimming for real HDR and faster response times, but not even high-end handheld PCs that cost almost twice as much do all that.

It's so fucking rich how Bergsala is blaming the retailers, "Oh they can set their own prices". Yeah but they can't take a loss cause you sell it to them for some ridiculous price. Can't believe they even try swinging that argument.

I ordered my MKW Bundle directly from Nintendo of Europe - Ireland for 5600 SEK, free shipping. So I recommend that if you're able.

This data is highly questionable.

17.5ms is 1 frame at 60fps. Nintendo technicians would have had to work hard to create such a lag. More likely that these tests have been conducted improperly -- especially given that this is a new system and there are a lot of folks hating on it.

Just quoting my self but I am 100% sure there are multiple models of those screens . I just borrowed my friends copy of sonic generation x shadow . Just to play as sonic and see if there is ANY Smearing or ghosting on my screen.

There is none . So I have to say sucks for those that got a switch 2 with bad screen !

I am really very OCD to this. I notice ghosting and smearing even in frame generation games like cyberpunk while driving or forza . I had bad LCD monitor that I thought it's good when I bought just to see the same crap even while scrolling neogaf . I am that sensitive and there is nothing on my switch 2 screen .

don't waste your time, he's a troll that have nothing else to do

Of course its a collective effort from multiple outlets to paint dear Nintendo as bad!! Nintendo is of course known to be supplying highest end components to its devices, Switch 2 screen is cutting edge to the point that no single outlet has proper equipment to test it!!

I heard Switch 2 components were co-developed with NASA and showing for the first time in a commercial device. Its revolutionary!

Also I agree with you that a Nintendo technician has to work hard to create such lag!! How ridiculous, no one is equipped to test this revolutionary device!

well, i can say that my screen is just wonderful. i think i prefer it to my hdr monitor.

The screen is the only thing they have to shit on the console… Let's them to have some fun 🤣🤣 Is going to be hard for them the next few years.
The screen is fine. Vast majority of everyone that actually has it is satisfied. This thread is now left with the random haters feeding off the leftover rotting corpse of a once fresh Switch 2 hate thread 😂

They are desperate to feed their Switch 2 hate

lol be easy on john, dude was clearly hinting at the shit screen since he had the thing in his hand.
you cant be too forthcoming with the cult harassing you all over internet.

When I have used tabletop mode it was almost always with the same pro controller I was already using docked, not detached joycon. It's just using a phone or tablet with a bluetooth controller don't read too deep into it ;)

I know, and probably some never have seen a Switch 2 in person 🤣. I just Lol when i read that the SW1 LCD screen is better than the SW2 screen.
