Sword Art Online |OT| Batman, now with more wings

Just finished reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, in large part thanks to this thread causing me to search for other pieces of fiction where VR is an integral part of the setting.

I was talking about this with someone in the anime thread (I've lost track of that post, so maybe he'll read it here instead) - where he posted a rather hokey excerpt from early in the book.

Glad to say that the book is much much better than he made it out to be - it is filled to the brim with 80s references... but then that's the point. If you can get past the eye-rolling at this poseur hipster name-dropping behaviour (not that I felt this, nor do I believe that was the writer's intention - but it might be perceived as such by a crowd sensitive to hating on the crowd of people that 'ironically like old stuff') - then the book is genuinely fun. There's a part in the book towards the end
where mech-godzilla and ultraman battle it out, in an not hokey, edge of your seat kinda way

The settings and technology isn't an accurate exposition of how VR technology will pan out - nor is it intended to be; it's first and foremost to serve the rollercoaster plot of the story. But the author does make an attempt to be 'realistic' (in so far as speculation on technology 40 years into the future can be 'realistic') where it doesn't affect the plot too much, by including extraneous details about rather plausible VR setups.

I starting watching this last week. It seriously is one of the best anime shows I've seen in a long time. I guess it's better if you've played a MMORPG before (terminology) but it's still a very good concept for a show. So glad I gave it a try via Crunchyroll as I typically wouldn't look at something like this twice :)

Can anyone recommend anything else by the writers and/or studio?

PS: Unless time is moving much slower in the real world, I wanna see how they explain what happened to their physical bodies. Did they set up life-support and stuff right next to the computer? lol

PS2: Kirito is such a badass. I really love "secret" badass characters :D

OMG just saw 10 thru 14. Amazing stuff. Need 15 right now. Thank goodness they didn't leave this next arc till the very end like most shows.

Also there is no way
someone can walk after 2 years of bedrest. Your muscles would have atrophied and you'd have to learn how to walk again.

I really feel like playing a MMORPG now lol

? Didnt Asuna already address that in ep 13 or 14?
and you can tell just from the episode that Kirito has moved from being in his room in episode 1 to being in this hospital

Yep, that they did my friend.
Asuna stated that the players' bodies were moved into hospitals for life support and that they would all soon die if they weren't able to log out soon. Hence we have epic Kirito vs creator battle.

So if every single thing I read about this show is a carefully constructed argument about how the writing is complete garbage full of plot holes and perfect characters, does that make me some sort of horrible person with zero taste in fiction for liking it?

It's OK to like SAO.

I mean, if billions of people can like Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey, i really can't see what's wrong with liking their equivalent for males.

There is NO WAY any normal person would play another VR game after such an experience. How will they possibly explain the motivation?
Honestly,
I could understand it. I always think about what happens when the adventurer returns home, when Frodo gets back, or whatever. That unbelievable excitement, harrowing adventure...how does one return to a normal life, where the most exciting thing to happen that day is what you're choosing to eat for lunch?

After awhile, I can see Kirito/Kazuto getting real bored, real fast. Jump back in.

I don't buy that.
All he wants to do is find Asuna and live happily ever after.

Pshhh. All those sword battles keep the relationship fresh. Plus, what does a sixteen year old know about long-term relationship happiness? He'll see another cute girl and ditch Asuna!

I know a lot of people make fun of it, but
honestly, it offers such a different experience that I think a lot of people--especially the people who fell in love with the life they found there--would go try another game, especially with assurances that they're no longer microwaves designed to fry your brain.

I hadn't got that far when I posted that. I'd never thought about it but I guess people in comas need diapers?
He shouldn't be able to walk and in the novels he was un a special type of bed for this kind of thing ..the anime "forgot" about it..

Believe me he will find one ( won't spoil )

he does want that

This show is flawed but I still find it extremely interesting and makes me want to see more of it. Screw the haters!

Isn't there way more than 2 arcs in the novels? Are they only going to do 2 arcs of anime or is there a chance they'll do more if it's profitable?

Oh and when is episode 15 coming out on Crunchyroll?

Sword Art Online is indeed a fun show to hate on.

Filled to the brim with potential. But also filled with "I can't believe they did that" moments.

Definitely, it may have a few issues, but Ill definitely be spending the $150, or whatever Aniplex of America chooses to sell it for. Kirito is one of the more intriguing characters this year.

The anime show will adapt the first 2 arcs and their side stories ..rougly 5-6 books of matérial..

He also thought the "plot twist" in the last episode was clever. He was also glad it wasn't spoiled so don't go spoiling the show for him.

After pondering about the issue of
why Kirito would risk his life by putting the helmet back on
I imagine it will be like when Homer and Bart put a rainbow afro wig on ex-President Bush's head. A prank that goes terribly terribly wrong.

I hope I'm right in this prediction.
