Episode 14

Wow. That was so dumb it made me dumber too. My IQ is probably about 2 now. Kirito really is the ultimate Gary Stu.
It's not good enough that he's already a nice guy, who gets all the girls, is probably the best solo player in the game, and is always at the right place at the right time. Nope. The game also has to come out and acknowledge that he is the player with the fastest reaction time. He also manages to figure out who the REAL villain is, just because. But that's not all! The villain also acknowledges that he is the most worthy opponent, and gives him a chance to beat the game immediately. Even though all the odds are stacked against him, he still manages to win, just because well.... the SYSTEM DECIDED TO LET HIM.

My God. I can just imagine the author writing this shit with his pants down, while jerking off at every line as he imagines himself as Kirito the ultimate super badass. Yeah, basically this is the ultimate representation of Young Adult fiction. Can it get any worse? Tune in next week to find out! Lol.

It's the spirit of their daughter inside the system.

Still perfect husbando material.

Yea I don't really even want to bother dissecting this. This was me laughing at the author for a solid twenty minutes.

So if every single thing I read about this show is a carefully constructed argument about how the writing is complete garbage full of plot holes and perfect characters, does that make me some sort of horrible person with zero taste in fiction for liking it?

Depends on what you like it for.

As long as you're aware of the problems (looks like you're), it's ok if you're having fun :p

Sword Online 14

Well then.

Looks like we still have one more episode after this at least.

This one was alright. Wasn't expecting the big bad to reveal himself that early. Final fight didn't have enough rage in it, I love it when they get across that a character is basically putting everything they have and more into a fight. One of the basics of programming is that you WILL run into bugs even if you think you did the right thing, although I did kind of see that ending coming anyway.

Interested in seeing how Kirito/Asuna will meet up.

As bad as the series as been this far, I just can't hate episode 14. It actually advances the main plot and I still find the melodrama fun. Is the show good? No, but as trashy fun it does its job reasonably well. Episode 14 wasn't really any dumber than the rest of the show.

Episode 14

Decent. Most applaud worthy thing in the episode
Asuna finally rose above worthless deadweight status and did something memorable, even if it didnt matter in the end. I was almost on the verge of applauding when she rose up and took the blow for Kirito. Good move
.

Probably the second best action scene in the series and Kirito was really good.
I liked his special move there remaining someone visible to deal that final blow. Akihiko definitely needed or needs more screentime, his real form, as he looked really nice. I did get into the emotions a bit when Kirito was crying, his voice then :(

The song used during the fight was also good. Kind of wish the ost was out just for it.

This forum is the only place I've seen such vitriol towards this show. It's bizarre.

While my disdain for previous episodes was mostly a joke, this final episode was no laughing matter. From the get go you know something is wrong by the fact they
skipped the whole battle with Mr. CGI Skeletonthing
.

To be fair, I'm not arguing that the anime has been a particularly strong adaptation all the time; I agree that a lot of the fights have been somewhat lackluster. Most of the dialogue scenes have been pretty good though IMO.

The important fights got the animation attention they needed. Most of the dialogue has been intriguing especially any that dealt with the Cardinal system or whatever and
the one with Akihiko this episode, as well as the big reveal moment with Heatcliff
. Enjoyable anime.

I don't think there's anything wrong with liking things that can be criticized. Even if other people can find negatives in it, if you find positives in watching it, who cares?

Well, maybe I'm not the best person to say this, because I don't think there's anything wrong with liking things even if they might have very few things about them to like at all.

Okay, yeah, I should probably just chill out, it's just that having an unrelenting wall of negativity coming at you over something you like can be a tad crushing unless you're really good at ignoring others' opinions, which I'm not.
I'll close by saying that I do think SAO is fluff to an extent, but it's really enjoyable fluff for me, and the LN is probably better than the anime.

Yeah, I think I understand. If I like something, I want other people to like it because I like seeing other people enjoy things that I enjoy. It's tough when people don't like a show I like, especially when all I see tons of criticism on something I enjoy. It's not like I'm going to stop liking the show and they aren't going to suddenly change their minds, so all I can do is feel kinda bad about it.

Yeah, if you enjoy it, that's the only thing that should matter. You are watching this for your own enjoyment, right?

Personally, for me, I require about essay length of explanation with in-depth analysis before I'll change my opinion on something, of course this analysis must be correct as well.

Vague statements don't really do much to get my brain going on the self reflection/examination of held opinions.

The orchestral stuff in the show is really nice. I watched all 14 current episodes today. I mostly hate anime nowadays, and even though this had some terrible writing and plot points, I still find the show enjoyable.

I love SAO and I've been bashing it since day one. I mean... I join in on the criticism because it's both fun to enjoy for what it's good at and what it's bad at and talk about it. I think just because you love/like it doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to tolerate others' negativity imo.

EP.14
Seemed like they were building up the whole "You can't solo this shit anymore" hardcore bosses, and then Kirito solos the last boss. What the fuck. Otherwise, I really liked the rest of the episode. I got sort of emotional, which is rare in anime for me.

Overall, I thought it was a solid show. The best episode was still the low level guild subplot.

Time for story-arc #2, I guess!

If you like this, I imagine you would like a ton of modern anime.

There's so very much I could complain about, rage over, and ridicule, but...no. Not this time. Even when the dialogue was awful and the animation was shit, it felt good, GAF. It was satisfying.

My only regret is that
the scene above the crumbling ruins of Aincrad wasn't the end of the story forever
. It would have been perfect.

Fair enough, but there's a difference between some people saying "here's where the show could be better" and nearly everyone around you just thoroughly mocking it for nothing more than their own self-amusement.

I really hope the show gets another season, because the material they would adapt for it would probably be less mockable (for lack of a better word) than the current stuff.

It's easier to do it for most when everyone else is. :p

Wow I don't think I've ever disagreed so hard with the GAF consensus before.

I had to pick my jaw up off the floor numerous times today while watching ep 14. I mean, I was freaking out, that shit was epic. What the hell is going on in here? You guys were laughing at that!? I do not understand.

Sword Art Online 14

Damn, what a fast-paced episode. In the middle of a massive boss, and then suddenly,
FINAL BOSS!
I should have seen that twist coming from a mile away, but I didn't, and for that reason, I will say it was awesome.

Loved the fight scene. Great animation and choreography. Maybe not quite
"end-game"
tier, but since that came out of nowhere, I can forgive that. Definitely my favorite episode yet.

Also props to A-1 for
making Kirito look how he should upon waking up. Of course, he shouldn't have been able to walk at all after a 2 year coma, but ah well, this is Nitpicking Art Online after all.

First time I really considered putting this in my top 10 for the year (of what's aired). Excited for what's to come.

Man, the opinions here for ep 14 is really a love or hate it. Sadly ep 14 is terrible because it defies the whole concept.

This show is so incredibly polarizing, haha. NeoGAF isn't the only place I've seen it criticized, though. It got a fair dose of criticism on 2ch, as well as MAL and even ANN a little bit.

This show leaves me conflicted. It's like, I see the problems there, but I don't feel them. Instead I feel like it's the most entertaining anime I've seen this year, and I can't wait to give my money to the people that decide to make a scaled Kirito figure (please be Alter, please be Alter). That ending almost had me bawling, and I don't usually cry at imaginary things.

I don't think it's 'everyone', I see a lot of people elsewhere that REALLY like SAO, here too. I'd say it's "polarizing", certainly a lot of people find it enjoyable still.

Saying that people are mocking it for self-amusement is not fair though, the show is full of problems and that said mocking stems from that. The show takes it's drama and plot seriously and it doesn't live up to that, resulting in unintentionally hilarious moments. The drama is the main focus of the show, it hardly does anything else. What's left are introducing the game mechanics through mostly bad side stories and occasional hardly animated 'action' scenes.

"here's where the show could be better", the problem is I can't think of many things that the SAO does well; it has pretty backgrounds, this episode too. To make it better, you have to redo the whole thing differently, I don't have any problems with the premise of being in a death game and nerve gear like a lot of people had here when show aired, I just accepted those in the beginning as I thought it could create interesting scenarios but it didn't go anywhere after that. After the first episode, it was mostly just filler and stupid teen love story, there was no main plot line, no character development (at least we didn't see anything, the leads turned perfect past he second episode), we didn't know why/how this game is happening or even
why the bad guy is doing all this, he can't be the only one behind this game, right? where is everyone else?
. They could do these. For giving the viewer a better understanding of the situation, they could show what's happening in real life a bit and how families are coping with this. They could do a lot more, they hardly did anything to realize the potential of being in a death game, all we got was a very badly made teen love story. The leads didn't even try to fall in love, they were just perfect halves and fit like gloves. I'd like to see a romance in a virtual world story done right, this wasn't that.

From my observation, people that like SAO, really dig that 'emotional' elements the show is trying for and if someone can't get into that then there is nothing else to see here imo. I like to see a detailed explanation of why someone likes SAO, most I've seen is just that it's "enjoyable" or "emotional" and hardly anything beyond that.

I havent enjoyed an anime in a long while, but after hearing good things about this, i decided to give it a shot.

While i like the concept, and think its a pretty good show, I think the writing is pretty terrible. Its just so overly melodramatic that it borders on absurd. I know most anime is like that, but man, I just dont believe it when the characters start speaking/acting like that and it totally takes me out of the show

That said, its still fairly entertaining

I like it overall, but there are parts that are bad enough for me to say that isn't really true. The writing is definitely more idealized and dramatic than most anime. I mean, it was written by a guy when he was 14 or something.

I'm sorry; I really do wish I could give you a better response but I'm not a very good author. I'll have to accept for now that I like SAO for being shallow and don't mind that it's not trying to be more than it presents itself to be on the surface.

Again, my having already read the novels, which contain a bit more detail about what's going on, may have something to do with it.

oh, no problem, this is all for having fun in the end :p

I'm just talking about the anime here ofcourse (don't know anything abou the novels really, one of my friends actually likes those a lot too, that's why I'm watching this honestly), if the source material is better that's fine but it wouldn't make the anime better, it would be a poor adaptation then for those unfamiliar with the source material. I can see a fan of the novels like watching it though, you can fill in the holes yourself based on what you know.
