Poorly. The times where I was given a code it was handed to me on a card and even then they might not have enough for everybody who preordered.
Well I'll see how it goes down in a week I guess.

How does Gamestop usually handle the exclusive content? I have the game pre-ordered at Amazon, but I wanted to pre-order from Gamestop as well and then return it after getting the exclusive content. :D

As mentioned earlier, for this game; the code's inside the game.
Pre-Order L.A. Noire with GameStop and receive a code to unlock the exclusive vice case,
  • The Naked City and the Badge Pursuit Challenge.
  • The Naked City: In a standalone case from the main story, Detective Cole Phelps investigates the supposed suicide of a stunning fashion model.
  • Badge Pursuit Challenge: Unlocks 20 Police badges to find across Los Angeles. Collect all 20 to unlock more bonus items.

Online Customers : A code with instructions will be packaged with your game.

Store Customers/In-Store Pickup Customers : A code with instructions will be packaged with your game.

So you need to open the game if you only want the code. Once open, you can't return it and demand your money back, since for opened game they only exchange them for the same game.

Amazon's the same, the code will be inside the game:
The Broderick Detective Suit code will be packaged inside the game box.

Same goes for Wal-Mart and Best Buy. And it would't surprise me if there's a sticker or something in the cover/wrapping talking about said 'exclusive content inside'.

So I can be an incompetent fuck-up and fail cases all the time?

It's about time this gen brought around a true detective game. Can't believe it's taken so long.

Damn, I can almost assure that if my teammate or captain call me an incompetent, I'll shoot them the first chance I get in a firefight and say that they got on my way.

I want to like it. I'm interested in the detective gameplay, but wary of it's execution from Rockstar and Team Bondi. A true detective game relies on the critical thinking of the player and not so much spot the difference or where's waldo. Let's hope there is more of the former rather than the latter.

I'll be waiting for the reviews.

Borrowed this from my dad, in preparation! :p

The book's quite nice, with a lot of insight and pictures from the actual investigation:

I'm really excited for this game but are there any videos of actual gameplay? Everything I see is cutscene galore.

Not really. Just like pretty much all Rockstar games (RDR, GTA, Max Payne, etc) it's mostly cinematic trailers doing the promotion.

Ugh, lame! Oh well, I can't pass up the Amazon price.

I've watched the third official trailer a dozen times now.

I also like Phelps' "Fuck Yeah" face under the "Big Question" header.

That is my favourite part of the entire post. I enjoyed making that bit the most as well. I tried to pick faces that GAF would like. Infact I'm surprised that more of them haven't been quoted and played with like the 'FFFFF' face.

Forkball said:
The faces look so weird in this game. It's like I'm watching film of a person's face projected on a 3D model.

I had a similar feeling as well, I think it's a bit jarring to get used to video game faces animating so properly, but then I try and compare the faces in this game to any other game and in the end I think it is such a strange thing to experience to see a computer designed face looking so real. I honestly believe that in a way, this is the way to get past the 'uncanny valley'. Or - is that feeling we are experiencing, THE uncanny valley and that the closer a digital representation of a human comes to being real, the more uncanny it feels? I dunno... to me, it feels just right now and I love it.

CloakedPuppet said:
I don't know. I felt that way when I first saw footage of the game. Now I love it...it has me spoiled for any other kind of facial animation tech. I think I'll need some downtime between games if I'm going back and forth.

I am worried that if I play this before the Witcher (which I'm going to because I'm going to get LA Noire before I get Witcher) then the facial animations in Witcher while much better than Witcher, won't live up to this. I'm afraid that it will spoil and that any game that DOESN'T have a similar tech in future will just not be good enough. Once it's been done before though, there really is no excuse.

I just hope that this is a game worthy of the Rockstar name. Last couple of Rockstar games have actually been developed by Rockstar. This game is being made by a dev that hasnt done anything in like 5+ years.

Im debating right now whether to keep my amazon preorder or wait and lose out on game credits for reviews.

Well that's not entirely accurate... they've been working on this game for 5+ years :p Plus, Rockstar have been fairly heavily involved in the dev process.

Well, I think it's a good sign that they allow you to skip the gun-fights then don't you think?

I just hope you don't become an one-man army. Every single GTA (and RDR) tricks me the same way. It starts semi-realistic, I like it, then I have to kill 50 dudes at once and there goes the suspension of disbelief out of the window.
I really want the investigation to be more important than the shooting, I just don't know if I have the faith.

Well I finally caved and preordered from Amazon.

My only worries about the game are that its not directly made by Rockstar... I can only hope that the only reason its shipping is because its up to Rockstar Quality.

The no multiplayer kind of makes me a bit irritated.

All I want from mutliplayer in Rockstar's free roam games is Free Roam Multiplayer. I kind of wish one of those discs would a multiplayer disc....

However part of me does want to wait for reviews...

You can skip the gunfights so I'm sitting in a position of thinking that this is going to be the case.

I really disliked the stories of RDR and GTAIV simply because they have to artificially stretch them over a 20+ hour game. There's a great four hour story in RDR/GTA.

Instead it's like:

"I've GOT TO SAVE MY BROTHER/FAMILY! THOSE SCUMBAGS ARE GONNA PAY!"
"Ok, I might know a guy who has a brother who overheard his wife saying something about that, but I won't tell you who the three people are until we finish this bank heist/city race/round up the cattle."
"k."

I think this was more of a problem with RDR than GTAIV. Especially since the main plot thread of GTAIV was one of survival so it felt more natural than RDR did when it was artificially extended.

Not really. Team Bondi could hit it out of the park for all we know.

But I don't think we have any reason to believe that this wasn't subject to Rockstar's touch. IGN had a podcast/interview with the "art director for the game" and it was Rob Nelson of Rockstar (who also worked on Red Dead Redemption), the soundtrack supervisor in that interview I posted above is from Rockstar and he worked on the GTA games and Red Dead Redemption as well. And I doubt their involvement stops there.

Edit: Also heard that Lazlow was on the Opie & Anthony show this week talking about LA Noire and he too helped work on the game.

thanks for the responses, ordered today.

I'm not so sure this is comforting or not. Skipping gunfights may signify underdeveloped A.I., level design, and shooting mechanics. I can appreciate a well-developed shooting game. (I don't consider Rockstar games to have well developed shooting mechanics and gameplay) The chasing and tracking action sequences look rudimentary from the video. I feel like the game is placing all its eggs in the detective game design and actor performances. I'm cynical of Team Bondi in spite of their ambition.

It's good to be that way though, I mean - you're not going to be disappointed if the game sucks like I am.

I'm pretty sure it's like RDR where you can only skip the fight if you die over and over.

Oh man, me too. I feel like I have unreasonably high expectations given this is Team Bondi's first game. And who knows - we could all get Brink'd once the reviews start rolling in. /knock on wood

I am super psyched for this.

I was talking to my friend while I was playing Deadly Premonition and was like "man, I wish they would make a game where you were a detective and had to solve a mystery like this one, except not rely on any combat scenes in between and the whole case was just focused on solving a big mystery or many mysteries."

The next day I saw the announcement for L.A. Noire. God shines down on me sometimes.

I havent been keeping track with this game as much as I should have been.

Just curious, is there a Roswell/alien connection at all? Being set in 1947.

I've got unreasonably low expectations for the game, so I probably can't be disappointed. I expect some interesting investigation gameplay to be marred by 90% filler content, car chases, and shootouts.

I'm fairly certain that there isn't, but now I really want an alien dlc kinda of like what happened with Red Dead Redemption and zombies.

LOL the latest term is "Brink'd' huh.

How often does this industry drop disappointments on gamers like that?

I wasn't super excited for Brink. First time I saw it, I thought it looked good and it had my interest, but it never really got past that 'mild interest' for me so it wasn't a disappointment to me. I think it sort of turned out just how it seemed. I heard it doesn't support 2560 resolution? Is that right?

I'm trying to think of any time that I've been this hyped for a game only to purchase it, get home and be majorly disappointed by it.

Maybe the last time that happened to me was GTAIV... that's not such a good sign considering it was a Rockstar game and I was so hyped by the promise of the game and then let down by the end result.

I've been watching some movies to get ready for LA Noire.

Just watched LA Confidential last night and loved it. Is the 2006 movie The Black Dahlia any good?

Some of you might remember the Red Dead Redemption video I did from the RDR OT thread. I just recently finished a video for L.A. Noire as well. Figured I would share it too, here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVs7FuCIMxs

Very well made. Can I ask where you got all the scenes from? I recognized some of the parts from the trailers that I've seen, but not all of them. So was curious if I missed watching any of Rockstar's original trailers. Good work though on your cut/version!

In my opinion...

it blows. Chunks. I heard the book it's based on is good, and the actors are good, but it's just... just really awful. In my opinion.

Yeah I thought RDR was better than GTAIV, but neither are very impressive. I want this game though.

The book isn't that good either. Better than the movie, but still not very good.

IGN has a video feature up about the stuff you can do when not on cases, and it has some new... actual gameplay in it.

http://www.ign.com/videos/2011/05/11/la-noire-man-about-town-video-feature
Thanks! Pretty cool that they put in that many side cases. I was thinking they were just going to have four or five scenarios where you simply shoot some dudes, but 40 is a lot more than I expected.

Also read today in the comments section of an article on Rockstar's site that the crimes you can respond to include "purse snatchers and talking down a suicide jumper" so it sounds like even those aren't all only about driving to a location and shooting people.
