Team Cherry breaks Hollow Knight Silksong radio silence: ‘Yes it’s real, progressing and will release’

“Yes the game is real, progressing and will release,” Matthew Griffin, who handles PR and marketing for the title, wrote on X in response to a plea for information about the highly-anticipated sequel.

It might not be much to go on, but it’s nevertheless a significant update given that fans have heard little about the game over the last few years.

Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced in February 2019 and is due to be released for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. It will also be available on Game Pass on day one.

The most significant update about the game in recent years came in May 2023 when Team Cherry confirmed it had been delayed.

“We had planned to release in the 1st half of 2023, but development is still continuing,” Griffin said at the time. “We’re excited by how the game is shaping up, and it’s gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can.”

According to its developer, Silksong will introduce a brand new kingdom, over 150 new enemies and Silk Soul mode, which is a new difficulty setting that greatly changes the game after the first playthrough.

I've kind of lost interest in this one now. Shame too, as I was really looking forward to it. I was about half way through the first game when they announced this, so naturally thought it would release within a year or so. Now many years later, I fail to see how it will ever live up to expectations.

Not really into these type of games but Hollow Knight and Ender Lillies both games had me playing non stop still I finished them. Even got the plat on Ender Lillies. Crazy to me that Ender Lillies is about to release part 2 and Hollow Knight which came out like 3 years before still hasn't released it's sequel.

I'm starting to care less and less.
Funny that I'm starting to care more and more. I think it's because I beat Hollow Knight just 2 years ago. Now the itch is gradually coming back!

I have the first one in my Steam Library, is it really worth to play it?

Hell yes! Give it about 3 hours and you will know if it has its claws in you or not.

Whatever, just take your time and make it good. I was half expecting it to be cancelled honestly.

What is even going on? They planned to release it in early 2023, yet we still haven't got a release window and have seen nothing since then? Strange. Did they take a break mid development or something?

Hollow Knight was great, and I have no doubt this will be too, but what on earth could be taking them all this time? Someday, I hope we get a retrospective on exactly what happened behind closed doors at Team Cherry.

You've got to wonder how they can afford it, too.

Who would have thought when they released the trailer it would take over 6 years and still no game.

Kind of crazy that the switch 2 is releasing before this game.

I did not enjoy it either. The art style is samey and mechanics are about as deep as a puddle. Kind of a slog without any meaningful reward.

Yeah. I have tried it in two different occasions, and each time I ended up bored to tears. The navigation its so annoying, it's really difficult to know where to go and memorize the map and I dont feel satisfaction with the gameplay in general

The fact that they are randomly speaking now after so much silence tells me that we might see this game at the April Nintendo direct.

Their Kickstarter backers should rake Team Cherry over the coals if this is true.

"We could have honored our promise to you years ago, but we didn't so that we could get a big bag of money from Nintendo."

They're three people who made a game that's sold over 10 million units on Steam alone, let alone on the major consoles and other services. They could self-fund their development of the sequel into retirement.

It's why Hollow Knight was so good, because it's a small team with a cohesive vision. It's also why it's very difficult to know any of the behind the scenes information.

I still have to question if the game was delayed by Team Cherry moving away from Unity. Yes, they back-peddled the licensing - but I can see even trying to pull something like that is a huge red flag. Barring enormous feature creep, the only other thing I can think of is if they got hit by ransomeware or something and didn't have any backups. Otherwise how could they be on track for the release window they announced, yet still be this far out almost 2 years later?

Oh damn. Maybe they went to Godot and then went back to Unity again? 🙈
