Nuts to this news.
Now we've gotta redo the "Xbox One Cannot" poster to include "cannot play any games while not tied to a paid Xbox LIVE Gold subscription".

I suppose the good news is at least Sony can't possibly be THIS bad, even of they do incoporate some shitty DRM.

I hope so, too. If all else fails, we have older games. It's a damn shame that if this becomes the norm, I can only imagine the more layers at the consumer level, the less people will be able to jump in. There was a reason Wii exploded, and it was because its entry level was massive.

This machine seems like it's doing everything to not get the support of enthusiasts. Only the ignorant.

This might just be crazy enough to work. Xbox One with 2 year contract. Gold subscription subsidises cheaper games, and those games go if you lose subscription to gold.
Games would have to be $29.99 at launch though.
People are happy to pay for multi_player. They might be happy to pay for daylight robbery.

I found this post in Nintendo thread.

I'm sitting here now with a bit over a day to go until my moment of truth/Gaf judgement day arrives. When someone is in my spot, you'd expect them to say they're scared shitless and nervous. Oddly enough, I'm not either one of those. I am calm, and confident in what I wrote. I'm still standing by everything completely and expect Tuesday to be redemption day for me.

I could elaborate completely on everything and leave everyone stunned. But, E3 for so many here is about surprises and I'm choosing to respect that. I could tell you the full titles for both 3D Mario and Smash 4 right now. But again you've all waited all year, and more patiently than in years past at that. You guys deserve seeing the titles of those games for yourselves, and the first trailers/footage of the games together as the reward for the wait and (mostly) patience. Ill say confidently here this is the E3 everyone's waited so long for. I could also detail and elaborate on both MS and Sony's pressers, but I won't, again because of the wonder of surprise. Without being super exact...brace yourselves really damn friggin hard for MS's presser in the morning and NO MATTER WHAT happens stand together as gamers that love their hobby. Stand up as a group and fight tor what you believe in and tell Microsoft NO. Sony's will be the stuff dreams are made of and after that presser is done, Microsoft will be totally irrelevant. Late tomorrow night will be an extremely jubilant party here after Sony. That's all I can say without turning up my hot seat I'm in even more.

This whole way through, I have been consistent and have not flip flopped on what I've said. I have been kind and respectful to all who PM'd me and I answered every last person who took time to write me.

During my time here on Gaf, I have used my account mostly appropriately and for the most part have treated most everyone here with respect. I understand what's at stake, and I'm definitely not trying to suicide or throw away my account. These Gaf accounts are hard to get!!

Finally, despite my personal love/hate relationship for this forum, it's been mostly love-a dynamic community with all kinds of opinions and ideas that I've not seen in very many places. That's what makes this place so great. Tuesday will speak for itself, Ill be okay. If any of my 500 plus posts have ever offended anyone, I sincerely apologize for that-that was never my intent.

So, with that, have a great E3!!! I wanted to get this post in before everything gets upside down crazy in a few hours.

Not sure how legit he/she is.

I pretty much just buy consoles for exclusives, and often don't play the system for months at a time while I'm occupied elsewhere. If this means I'll have to pay ~$15 on the off-chance I want to replay Halo 5 or Dead Rising 3 I'd just say fuck it.

If all this turns out to be true, this is the worst example of third console curse we've seen so far. I find it hard to believe Microsoft really thinks it can get away with those practices hoping the average consumer will not notice what is going on.

By this point, again, if this turns out to e true there is little to nothing Microsoft can show that would make me buy a XBone. Sad times, sad times...
Yeah, it's really a lot to take in and seems to completely fly in the face of accessibility. I imagine at worst using "the cloud" requires a Gold subscription, and thus it's de facto required to play most of your games, even if technically there's nothing stopping you from playing anything that's not cloud enabled other than the dialing home.

But if our worst case imaginations are true - hell, even if they meet half way like that example above - then it's so extreme it'd seem more like a literal curse. How the fuck else do you just lose your minds like this?

It's not a big deal guys, it's like buying an extra coffee a every 2 weeks.
I thought this was an obvious direction they'd head down, but maybe it won't pan out.

Jesus F Christ. They are going to deceive the public like that? Lure them with cheap prices then smack them with chains and binding contracts and expensive subscription to retain their right to play? Just when I thought there's limit to MS' depravity.....

Owning things through one off payments is so 20th century. Look at Adobe and their Creative Suite subscription for instance. Software is a service now. And services are paid monthly.

Relevant.

I've only heard this from one person but think about if MS merged the concept of PS+ with XBLG and applied it to your games

ahahaha fuck THAT. It'll go over like a lead balloon. What are they thinking???

edit: I'm interpreting this to mean that if you stop paying for XBLG, the games you paid for will be completely inaccessible without a subscription.

Is it really happening? So the console is 299$ and the live is the subscription?

I'll wait till they actually say this. All this seems like this console was conceived in an Orwellian nightmare...

HOW can they sell that to the public???

This news makes me woozy.
I seriously hope EU drops the hammer on this. Maybe there's hope that if customer backlash doesn't kill this SuperDRM, European law will.

System is off set with cheaper prices and anytime you re-sub you get your library back plus DLC incentives to bring you back.

I HAVE TO REITERATE I ONLY HAVE THIS FROM ONE PERSON.

Definitely goes along with CBoaT's comment, though.

I'll just say this: Anybody who supports a system like this (if true) is insane.

I tell you what; I have been "let's not jump to conclusions" bandwagon for all of next gen; but if these turn out true; man, what a let down. It might be time to write to your local and national representatives (maybe a little melodramatic; but not much).

So it's like PSN+ except no free games only discounts but with losing games if the sub runs out? What a hot deal.

I can literally picture MS execs sitting there thinking "man, everybody loves PS+, what if we incorporated that into Xbox Live and made it across all games on Xbox One! People would love us!"

Point. Missed. Spectacularly.

My biggest fear is that IF this mandatory sub is true, then it would mean they could afford to price it at $299. And sadly, money talks.

most people are smart enough to be able to distinguish between (say) $299 with a mandatory contract, and $399 without one.

Unlocked phones are a thing for a reason, brah

I'm thinking $399 with the hidden fees or $529 without or something.

I also have this gut feeling XBLG is going to cost a lot more.

If there is one thing I hope everyone learns from all of this is Microsoft, and publishers love money and want all of it. If they went through with the Live Gold sub to have access to your games, don't pretend like they will do anything more than give you $5-$10 off the regular $60 price.

The irony is Sony already has a relationship with Publishers and themselves to put games on PSN at a discounted price compared to retail, this is only sweetened by PS+. However, at least there it is yours forever, even if you aren't a Plus member down the road.

Also lol at them subsidizing the cost of the console with Live. They honestly believe people are going to buy this at $400-$500 regardless because they are Sony pre PS3 arrogant right now.

Mess
