Terrorist attack in London [up: 6 people killed, ~50 injured, 3 attackers dead]

We need armed police patrolling the streets/roaming around at all times in vans. We at least need to rethink how something like this happens and how we deploy police.
They already are patrolling around constantly in 4x4.
Not sure how effective the police in vans approach would be, e.g. Paris Champs-Élysées

there was footage of an arrest and police action in Monument on Sky too (Monument is north of the river but not far away from the north end of London Bridge.

Is a few falsely imprisoned people a worthy price to pay for potentially saving dozens of lives? That's what this basically boils down to.

No it doesn't. There is a reason that societies have justice systems. Arbitrary power is evil, and far more dangerous than deranged murdereres.

And how long do we put them in prison for? Months? Years? When do we release them? What's a guy who's been imprisoned for years because he may theoretically be a terrorist gonna do when he gets out?

I'm not saying that is what should happen. I'm boiling down the "arrest them before they can do anything" argument to what it really means.

Sky just showed that video of the police shouting in the restaurant. They hadn't cut out the part where a guy calls the police cunts, but then his friend told him to shut up and not be a fucking idiot.

This is why they have to be so loud and menacing, they are dealing with drunk knobs.

Cunt is a pretty standard word over here, it's pretty casual.

When I saw that video and heard the exchange, it almost made me smile because it was so British.

Edit: didn't hear the Muslim part, so nevermind.

RIP, and stay safe London.

Shit my office is right by there. Odd to be on the north end - the reports sounded like the van was heading south and then people headed from the van into borough market so the opposite direction

It isn't, we arrest and convict for terrorism that has foiled any attacks actually occurring ~ https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...uk-jails-hits-record-high-home-office-figures

Or from here ~ http://researchbriefings.parliament.uk/ResearchBriefing/Summary/CBP-7613

There are lots of stats in that PDF going up to 2016. The long of the short is we arrest and convict many who do not get to carry out an attack. Our biggest issue is losing track of those that are capable of doing so and not managing to stop them prior.

It's not quite the time to play armchair intelligence officer, but it isn't quite fair of our services both police and intelligence to say they never manage to be proactive and prevent.

Yeah? And how well is that strategy going?

fuck :/ me and my gf are in london for this weekend and we were on the tube that was heading towards london bridge (our stop was the one before) when an announcement rang out telling everyone that the station would be closed because of an 'incident' above ground. when we left our station and got back to the hotel we hadn't realised what had happened until now.

we were crossing that bridge earlier today, and we were only one stop away from the incident as it was happening - i feel a bit spooked if i'm being honest. rip to those killed and i hope anyone injured fully recovers. this is fucking awful :(

As a Londoner the thought of the damage that could be done by multiple perps driving around crowds in a van and moving on fills me with dread. What a world we live in.

What can you really do to prevent attacks of this nature?

You can't, that's why terrorism is so effective. You have to change minds, not make arrests, and that's so much harder to do.

Isis and the like adore when these attacks cause xenophobia, because it makes it easier for them to recruit."See, the western world hates you, come join us! "

I don't think you can, you need to eliminate the source, but when the source is an idea it becomes almost impossible. What we have to do is think why it doesn't happen in certain places.

My mum (still in the UK) just sent me a text saying there's an incident 500 yards away from where the Manchester benefits concert is being held.

I've seen nothing on this at all. Anyone confirm?

He very clearly shouts "fucking Muslim cunts"

Focus on intelligence.
Don't cut funds to the police and security services.
Don't invade countries that have fuck all to do with you on a false premise.
Better integrate people into the local community.

Damn! These police officers carry only batons?? Really?

In addition to what's been stated, police have also repeatedly voted against being armed as a standard. They literally do not want to be wielding firearms.

Jesus though. Guess the security level won't be coming down anytime soon...

Why not? London has a history with terrorism (IRA), didn't change anything. You don't need guns in public for safety. They have special forces which of course are armed.

Something happened earlier in a petrol station, police towed a car, not related I think.
