God dammit, that first shot made the front end look like an AM, disappointed. Has the price been announced?

They wisely nailed a market segment that no one else is addressing . . . no one is making an electric crossover, mini-van, or SUV.

Well, if they can build it for a reasonable price, they may have something.

I wouldn't be so sure. Have you seen what they did to the Model S center console from prototype to beta?

The beta's center console looked like it fit into the car well, but I might be thinking of the prototype. The touchscreen in the model X prototype literally likes they just bolted some random screen to the dashboard, it doesn't even come close to fitting so I'm hoping they just haven't finalized the interior design yet.

Gull wing doors are so stupid. Have none of these designers opened a door when the car is wet? Good luck with that.

It looks like a chinese knock off of an Acura ZDX or BMW X6.

50-100K isn't a bad price point, I'd be interested to see people will abandon they're Hybrid's for this. It'll probably find a decent market with eco-moms.

it went from this (note how well it flows with the overall esthetic and dash design and how it goes right into the arm rest):

:-(

it's like a big "fuck you" to anyone with a sense of style or design. just a bigass block with stuff kinda adapted to its presence, rather than a screen integrated into the flow and lines of the dash.

Yeah that center dash is terrible. Doesn't flow with the car at all. Only reason I can see they didn't make it a true central console is due to leg room.

Gull wing is stupid, could have accomplished the same thing with a standard door with the top hatch part lifting optionally if you wanted.

Surprised there isn't more space in this as roomy as the S looks.

EDIT: VVV lol are those touch screens on the wheel. Who thought that was a good user interface idea?

Alright guys let's go to the movies!

Jesus you STILL aren't out of the back yet. Just crawl through the front.....

Doesn't look entirely bad. Some things look tacky as shit, though (like that center console).

Why gull-wing doors on the back but normal up front? Seems unnecessary. Might make loading some objects into the back a little easier, I guess.

Is this like a Reaganomics trickle down thing? Tesla was awarded $465 million in taxpayer money in 2010. For cars that cost more than most people can afford. Is the hope that by dropping nearly half a billion in taxpayer money on expensive toys that the tech will trickle down to normal cars?

Yes. That is how all technology since forever has worked.

The Model S underwent some pretty serious body and design changes since its initial reveal. I expect the same here.

Uh, you can't really apply economic theories to technology. But yes, that is basically how every single piece of new consumer technology works.

I'm going to guess the goal is to make sure Tesla can R&D batteries that are cheaper and more efficient as those are two major hurdles with electric cars. The sooner those problems are solved, the sooner we can get to an all-electric future.

For now, Tesla is marketing its cars towards the rich since they're the only ones who can afford the high upfront cost of an electric vehicle. We're going to see more and more electric cars at "regular" prices soon enough though. I actually did see two Nissan Leafs since Monday so maybe we're already at the point where a mainstream-priced car can be electric.

Also, the Toyota Rav4 EV is going to have its power train (batteries and motor in this case) made by Tesla. Maybe that's a case of "trickle down" effect?

Looks are subjective.

Looks fine to me ... looks just like 6 other crossovers on the market. Whatever. The doors are obviously different. I always worry if something like that will still be working 8 years down the road.

technology always trickles down.

that's all that needed to be said.

No. Tesla is a car company. They just buy batteries from suppliers. They do do pack design but that can't change the fundamental physics of the battery cells.

So what did they get the money for? Solyndra was given money since they were researching cheaper ways to manufacture solar panels. I assume Tesla is/was doing something to make electric cars in general better.

I like the design language, but the profile is fucking ATROCIOUS. They shouldn't have stretched the Model S design over an SUV/CUV/whatever the fuck that is.

Yeah, that's my feelings too. I love some of the detailing, but in general a good sedan design should not be pushed into being a bloody huge road warrior like this.

In the past I would have more readily agreed but these days with even the vaguest concepts of technology being rabidly patented and litigated over I'm fairly skeptical.

How long is a reasonable amount of time to expect a return on that $465 million investment in the form of Tesla producing a vehicle in the $25k-$40k range that competes with the Nissan Leaf? I'm somewhat disappointed that the first feature being hyped about the Tesla X is that it's quicker to 60 than a 911.

The Model S starts at $50k and optioned out it's $100k. And the $50k orders are all in the back of the line until the $100k orders are filled. The Tested.com guys described this as being a bit "shady"... I think they have a point. I wouldn't care if there weren't such a large amount of taxpayer money involved, FWIW.
