Test Drive Unlimited 2 |OT|

Douchebag. Yes, me.
I've put about 6 hours into it. I actually really, really like it. The driving physics aren't great, but they seem just as bad as TDU1, just in slightly different ways. You no longer get that weird "jumping" when going up and down some curved grades, which is a welcome addition. Other aspects of the physics seems worse however... in hardcore mode, the e-brake is ridiculously powerful. I only really use it if I want to pull a quick 180 on a road.

My other big complaint is how easy all the races are so far. I consistently blow away the other drivers in the first D-class road races and B-class off road events. Maybe they'll get harder later. As a counterpoint, racing against other people you see driving around is very fun.

The biggest catch is the open world exploration aspect. It is incredibly fun to drive around Ibiza, discovering vistas and various reward unlockables. The graphics engine is a lot better than TDU1, at times it can be close to stunning depending on where you are. The off-road races are a great addition and work very well.

The fact that they incorporated this douchebag simulator into the game is kind of hilarious. I'm just embracing it, and making myself as douchey as possible. Plastic surgery, horrendous sweaters, ridiculous hats... and I haven't even touched on the clubbing/dating sim or the redecoration aspects. Once I got over the absolute revulsion of the voice acting and overall concept, I just find the whole thing amusing now. It's also funny how absolutely insipid, empty and pointless that entire lifestyle is, even when simulating the "best" aspects of it.

Anyhow, I think it's great. I loved TDU1, and I'm actually enjoying this one even more. I haven't even checked out the upgraded engine in Hawaii yet...

How many jokes can we make about this .gif?

I see that they put all their time and effort into motion capturing white dudes dancing instead of focusing on car handling.

"their physic focus was obviously not on the car side of things"

Does this still include missions of driving random cars to locations without wrecking them too much? I had so much fun with those

Is there a PC demo in any region based on the final code?

Can a beta participant comment on any perf gains?

Hell yeah. I made an easy $30k dropping off a Ferrari. It was quite a tension between wanting money and wanting to drive over 200mph.

From what people were writing earlier, it's not even as good as TDU1's controls.

I still might pick it up, really liked the 1st game.

Having played TDU1 I have to disagree. The controls are far better than TDU1.

I think just about everything is better than TDU1. Not sure how anyone can say otherwise.

I put in about 4 hours so far and haven't come across any transport missions. Where do you get them?

Go to the map, set it to display single player challenges and they will be the ones with the bomb symbol and a time limit to get to them. I'm pretty sure all of that type are called convoy missions.

It's really part of the magic. I love how when you get plastic surgery, your guy just lays down and the doc immediately goes to town. That's how badasses do it, I guess.

Once I got over the absolute revulsion of the voice acting and overall concept, I just find the whole thing amusing now.
If anything, I think they didn't go far enough. If they were going to go this far, they should have just taken it to God Hand levels.

I also really like how your character wears a full head bandage complete with black and blue eyes for the next day/night cycle while their face heals.

I love buying fine clothes and winning televised championships with my bandages on.

Glad to hear some positive vibes form people about the game early gaf word was making it sound appalling, but with views being so drastic both ways and no demo I guess I am going rent first.

there's an achievement for winning races while wearing it too.

Yeah, I've easily won every event I've entered into with AI opponents with stock cars. However some of the time trials have given me trouble since the handling kind of kept me from finishing that far ahead of the set winning time.

Hey does anyone know where the Subaru dealership is? I want to buy a WRX. Also, do you have to have certain licenses just to buy certain cars?

I'm starting to feel that we're going to be seeing folks embracing this game more and more. Even the more douchy elements. Methinks this could be a sleeper like the first one. I can't wait to get home to play more! This coming from someone with a massive backlog of fantastic titles.

Seems like the game only uses a single core on multi-core CPUs. Probably why it performs so shitty. I really do hope they plan on optimizations. The MMORPG like launcher for the game seems to suggest updates to the game will be frequent.

I wouldn't be surprised. I just fell into loving Test Drive Unlimited 1 for the first time this last weekend. I mean, I'm completely hooked. If you meet the game on its own terms it will grow on you big time.

Can't wait to give TDU2 a spin tonight and see what they've worked on for the past few years.

I've got a 2.5 quad, 4870 and it runs great for me. I was expecting some slowdown (like with F1 2010) and am pleasantly surprised how well it runs.

What is runs great? To me that is a solid 60fps.

That explains a lot. Come on people, it's 2011.

it's northeast somewhere.. I think. hm. hold on. edit: hm, no it's in the middle of the island..

you don't have to have anything (except money) to buy cars. I'm not completely sure but I think the licenses are just for the events tied to the licenses.

waaaaat

So glad I didn't impulse buy it. Had it in the cart. Single core usage is worse than shady DRM in 2011.

Played it for a bit today. The intro, licenses and attempt at cutscenes/dialogue are all fucking awful. Playing on the 360, the graphics are fantastic, controls are better than TDU1 (no more jumping and massive oversteer on all but the slowest cars), sounds are about the same, music is forgettable and the content is amazing. Well done Eden, 2 for 2 with me - keep it up.

That said, I hope the content flows in and the community stays active - it is the only thing that will make the game stronger than a flash in the pan 1-2 week addiction.

no doubt the community will stay strong with this, tdu1 still had a lot of people in it up until now, but yeah I really hope they do some nice expansion size updates to it. in my dreams! heh. although the game already has a crazy amount of content.

didn't check if hawaii still has motorbikes. hope it does, if not it would be nice if motorbikes was added back in. at least.

This game just does not give a good first impression. In fact, it gives a fucking horrible one. Granted, I haven't played the game very long, only about an hour or so, but there's so much bullshit to wade through I'm having a hard time summoning the will to continue. And I LOVED the first TDU. Maybe it's been a long time since I've played it, but the control in this game is better? Really? I know the first game's handling was a bit slippery, but I don't remember losing complete control on turns.

Again, only initial impressions, but so far this game is one big fucking bummer. Maybe it'll get better.

yes, damage is only cosmetic. just like the first one. looks awesome.

Has anyone played both the PC and 360 SKU? My main complaint about the PC SKU are that the sounds are terrible. They're very muted, and lack any "oomf".

Toyed around with the casino for a little while as the code started working on the 360.

It's...interesting.

I think the server was having problems, or very few people have actually downloaded it, as I get the impression the casino is supposed to function like car dealers in the main game, where you can see other players wandering around. Only, there was no one there in the casino.

Did some of the slot machines and gained a couple of levels, as the levels there are completely separate from the main game (I guess making 70 the highest obtainable level). Raced the Audi around the island for points, although doing so just made me wish I had the 1,000,000 credits to buy it (equivalent to $2,000,000 cash).

Tried to play roulette but at that point I started getting server errors, so I just went back to the main game. I'd imagine poker would be broken as well.

Loved, loved loved the first game. I hardly even recognize this new one. Disappointment total right now.

The handling, which was forgivable in the first game, is somehow even worse this time around. Small movements on the stick translate to sweeping direction changes. Good luck trying to define a smooth curve in this game, much less doing it at speed. Taking turns at even casual speeds may end you in a crazed spin. There is no longer any option for setting steering sensitivity (that I could find), nor headshake, nor blur. I honestly have a hard time believing they rebuilt their handling model and think THIS represents success. Do they even play their own game?

Its like they spent the past few years on all the non-driving aspects of the game. Are they trolling us?

I'm going to give it some more time to click with me, since I just had to buy this thing day one, but I'm pretty deflated right now. The game I was looking forward to settling down into all day has just been an exercise in frustration.

no control settings in the console version?
There are options for configuring a wheel. Do any of those affect a gamepad?

Edit: Also, is there an option to retry an event without having to complete it first?

And there seems to be a disconnect between cockpit and outside views on dirt roads. Form the outside my car shakes to high heaven, but from the cockpit there is zero movement. The only way you can tell you're not on the street is the fact that your top speed seems to be cut in half. You have to really get into the bushes and weeds to feel any shake or rumble.

What car are you using? I have used probably around 30 of them and have yet to experience this. The closest thing was when using a moderately high level muscle car, but that was due to the weight and pushing the gas too hard so the back wheels lost grip. You need to progressively press down the gas as your car speeds in sync with the RPMs so that you keep your torque at a good balance.

If you're turning while going over a hill you have to be really careful. If you have a hard turn coming up, don't be afraid to let go of the gas and just coast at your best turning speed, which is usually the 3rd gear of the car, so brake to that point a little before you enter the turn. Then as you are carrying through it, start hitting the gas, but not max. Like I said, keep it in balance with your RPMs and only make progress in your acceleration when you're going fairly straight and your wheels are secure on the road.

I really haven't experienced any control problems at all. Some of the cars are more of a pain than they are worth, but it is all pretty intuitive. I've never thought "Why is it doing that?" or anything like that.

There is no longer any option for setting steering sensitivity (that I could find)
On the PC version it's the fourth tab in the controls screen, lots of options.

Mustang Fastback - one of the starter cars. And the turns in question are the basic city street turns in the first few events. If I was slow as a crawl I could take the turns and lose the race, or I'd take it a tiny bit faster and spin out, or else I'd just slide right off the road. Its like the game operates on extremes but doesn't provide you enough feedback as a spectrum of grip.

In the first game I ended up reducing the sensitivity of steering quite a bit and upping the headshake. That worked out the kinks for me in TDU1, but there don't seem to be any options this time around.

Also, they removed the zoom levels of the GPS? Boo.

You're at the very beginning of the game? Come on man, don't judge the whole game on that, they let you test drive for a reason. That car is a piece of shit for people of a very particular taste. Pick one of the other two, I went with the Lotus.

There is no demo for this?

The first one was craptastic but I enjoyed the concept... but I'm not up to shelling out 50 Washingtons on the sequel without trying first.
