Texas Republican Party Drafts New Platform Advocating For 'Ex-Gay Therapy'

Probably little Timmy and Johnny out in the front yard playing cowboys and 'Injuns', a Latino man in the backyard tending to the garden at 10 cents an hour, and the missus off in the kitchen. She gets outta line, a good slap on the ass will set her straight. All while Mr. Johnson reclines on his chair smoking his pipe while reading the newspaper about a black man being executed for smoking marijuana.

Oh man, this is good.

Worst part is when I show my disapproval of things like this on my facebook (I live in Texas), there's people who actually think being gay is wrong and they start shitting on me for not respecting other people's opinions.
Like with racism, people like that need to be shamed into the ground whenever they rear their ugly head. I try my best to call out people on their ignorance and bigotry. If left unchecked then it just creates a platform for them to speak on unscathed.

as a registered independent voter, i can only hope the Democrats win the next presidential election to further put the Republican party into obscurity. i could care less if your conservative or liberal, the Republican party is a cancer to the U.S., it constantly detracts from real issues in favor of putting some ridiculous pseudo-religious and racial homogeneous agenda at the forefront of every issue.

What a nightmare.

Their ability to hold on to power via the extreme right is slowly being eroded, which will eventually force them to move closer to the middle. Demographic change is doing this, but its a slow process.

I am sick of the Republican Party trying to be the moral compass of this country/state and trying to force their views on others.

As a liberal Texan this embarrasses me to no end.

Oh I understand the scenario. It was just too uncomfortable and weird.
The rumor at the time was that they had issues with the actor due to the actor's views/beliefs and basically turned it into what we got (and then basically dropped it) in order to avoid any issues.

they wont last that long. the fringe right is becoming the ever present image of that party as more moderate conservative go independent or just become democrat. there is no way your going to see an influx of gay and non-white republicans anytime soon representing the party with on the voter front or in the political arena. the party no matter how much they clean up their rhetoric isn't actually interested in doing those things.

The party platform is where they trial-balloon all of their most crazy conservative wet dreams. It is the stuff of nightmares.

I do hate living here sometimes. One thing is that nearly everyone is amazingly nice and easy to get a long with, that's great and I love that, but some of the views the majority of them hold is pretty backwards.

Most of the major Texas cities are liberal-leaning, in fact.

Nice to see those are the ones next to the border. Viva Mexico!!

Want the gay to go away? Go to Texas.

The Texas Republican Party now endorses so-called "reparative therapy" for gays, under a new platform given final approval at its annual convention Saturday.

The new anti-gay language never came up for debate before roughly 7,000 delegates ratified a Texas GOP platform that tea party groups succeeded in pushing further to the right, including winning a harder line on immigration.

One influential tea party group called Texas Eagle Forum had urged the party to support psychological treatments that seek to turn gay people straight. It comes after Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie last fall signed a law banning such therapies on minors, and California has a similar law.

The Fort Worth Convention Hall cheered when party leaders announced that Christie finished a distant 11th in a 2016 presidential straw poll.

"There's a very, very small group of people who want to keep the party in the past. We were here today to try to pull the party into the future," said Rudy Oeftering, vice president of the gay conservative group Metroplex Republicans. "The only way the party can go into the future is to start listening to young people, to start listening to people who have gay family members."

Oeftering and allies had lined up to speak against the therapy language that had been added earlier this week. But they never got a chance to address delegates, because a parliamentary motion to approve the full platform was called first.

Under the new plank, the Texas GOP recognizes "the legitimacy and efficacy of counseling, which offers reparative therapy and treatment for those patients seeking healing and wholeness from their homosexual lifestyle."

The American Psychological Association and other major health organizations have condemned such counseling, which generally try to change a person's sexual orientation or to lessen their interest in engaging in same-sex sexual activity. The groups say the practice should not be used on minors because of the danger of serious psychological harm.

"The platform reflects what the people in the Republican Party have asked for, and that should be no surprise: family values, protection of marriage between one man and one woman and everything that goes along with that," said Jonathan Saenz, president of the conservative group Texas Values and a convention delegate.

Gay conservatives did come away with a rare victory at the convention: Winning the removal of decades-old language in the state party platform that states, "homosexuality tears at the fabric of society."

Mock if old.

I wonder how many of these 'homosexuality destroys families, etc' people have gotten a divorce. my family is full of this particular brand of hypocrisy and it always made me laugh.

Sometimes I wonder how many Gay republicans hide behind their constituents and advisors. What a backwards law. How about you fucking get some reparative therapy for all the fucking crackos running around.

Seriously, gay people are not our problem and never will be. Mentally ill people are!

I seriously think politicians that come up with absolutely stupid, homophobic garbage like this are gay themselves.

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions
Just because you are a Republican does not mean you agree with the entirety of their party platform.

How many republicans are speaking out against the change?

This is the reason I will never call Texas a good state to live in, not when we have these stupid assholes in power.

Who needs to listen to reality. If you believe something hard enough suddenly the world changes around you to fit. Its called becoming clinically insane.

I've long speculated that many of those that seem convinced that homosexuality is a choice have merely confused their own homosexuality with the ability to choose to be homosexual at any moment.

Or maybe they're not confused, they're simply clinging to the hope that it's a choice so that they can choose to be straight and won't be ostracized from their communities.

Let's not get it twisted though, those self-hating gays wouldn't be self-hating if it wasn't for the culture of homophobia that many straight people foster.

Never understood the republican obsession with issue of gay marriage, Bible says it is a sin like many other things, yet you don't see any major candidates openly campaigning against sex outside of marriage. It is hypocritical.

Unfortunately, they stand a good chance of taking the Senate this year :(
I think statistically it is a dead heat right now, though democrats have been gaining some momentum. Hope Republicans get crushed, embarrassed to be registered with them. :(

The best option is that the repubs destroy themselves, the dems become the center right party (which they practically are now anyways) and we get a true liberal party instead.
