Honestly I'm fine with all that. It would improve the college game again. Screw the NBA.

It is highly unfair to the the players. What's the problem with some skipping college? There will still be enough players wanting to go to college not only because of the experience but because it can actually help their draft stock. Going to UK or NC and playing in front of several thousand people and being on national TV every other weekend is a nice bonus to get some education and working together with great coaches.

So I think if they do it like in Baseball it would be the best for both players and schools.

This makes no sense to me Purdue's AD must be doing something incredibly stupid.

It's about the money. Apparently Mizzou have offered Painter $2mil/yr + significant raises for all his assistants. He is trying to leverage the Mizzou interest into a pay raise for himself and his staff, but looks like the Purdue AD is not biting.

Now that Moore and Johnson are leaving for the NBA it is the perfect time to bolt. His recruiting has been subpar the last few years and Purdue probably won't sniff the top 7 of the B10 for the next few years.

Teams want scouting to be easier. They didn't want any more Kwames so they put in the one-and-done rule and now they don't want any more Evan Turners coming into college as nobodys, staying for a few years, then schooling Freshman on the way to inflated draft stock so they'll put in a longer limit to increase the level of competition They also want players to be as ready as possible. It's extremely unfair to the players, but it's how it works.

There will be a two year limit, players won't be able to declare from high school, the Player's Association is going to be desperate once the season starts and the lockout is still going on and the first people they'll sell out are the ones who aren't in the union yet. It's going to make next year's draft suck though and this year's draft already sucks so that's not good for teams currently rebuilding.

This is unbelievably unfair to rebuilding teams to the point where something would have to be done to compensate them.

Interesting. I had just assumed that since Painter and Martin are close they had probably discussed things and if Painter was going to leave he would have probably told Martin who would not have taken the UT job and tried to hold out and get the Purdue job. Although I guess if the AD isn't going to pay as much as UT then who knows.

Now I really want VCU to win it all:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/tournament/2011/news/story?id=6264986

A title for the 11th-seeded Rams of VCU would be troubling for several casinos given some big bets on the long shots, said Colbert and Jay Kornegay, executive director of the race and sports book at the Las Vegas Hilton.

"There's a bomb waiting for us, believe me, at the end of this story," Kornegay said.

VCU was one of four teams that won a play-in game to get a seed in the tournament with the bulk of the 68 teams. It beat USC to become an 11 seed, then beat Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and Kansas en route to the Final Four. It was an underdog in each game.

Given the lines set in each game, the odds were 1,371-1 against VCU reaching the Final Four, said gambling expert RJ Bell of Pregame.com.

Kornegay said VCU was included in a list of 19 teams given as a field bet before the tournament started -- with 200-1 odds if any of them won the title.

"Once they beat Georgetown pretty handily, then they started getting some interest," he said. "I've been doing this for 22 years, I can't remember a field team making it to the Final Four."

Colbert said his books made the Rams an 80-1 longshot when the final 16 teams were set -- the most improbable team to win a title -- and took some big-money bets at that price.

"VCU is the one team that we don't want to win," he said. "Every other team is good for the house."

Next year we'll get to know how the Raptors felt after getting Bargnani :(. Rebuilding teams ended up okay last time though because 2005 was an awesome draft with three all-pros in the top 4 picks so the very worst were able to completely rebound, but this time around is going to suck with how bad the 2011 draft is.

Rumors getting stronger that Missouri is about to snatch up Matt Painter.
I think most mizzou fans are surprised that this has played out as much as it has, I really saw Painter as an "awesome" if we land him, "oh well we tried" if we don't kinda coach. I really thought it was less likely when I heard Martin was going to Tennessee, but with what he's making it still seems possible to pull Painter. I dunno, all hypothetical now, we'll know soon enough.

Too add to the Painter to Mizzou rumor, this is what Martin said at his presser today when asked about the Prudue job:

Cuonzo Martin said he "definitely" knew Purdue job might be open soon: "I love Purdue and always will ... but now I'm a Tennessee Vol."

Christmas Comes Early

Yesterday around noon, we got word from a very knowledgeable source (who we wish all the best in Atlanta) that a team meeting was called for this morning. With the news that Chris Mooney signed a 10-year deal at Richmond, things were starting to look very favorable for us non-believers. Today, the news we've been waiting for finally broke out:
University of Dayton basketball coach Brian Gregory is leaving after eight years to become coach at Georgia Tech, replacing the fired Paul Hewitt.

Georgia Tech will hold a press conference at 5 p.m. to announce the hiring.

Gregory broke the news to the Flyers during what one player described as an emotional meeting at 7:30 a.m. today.
I'm sure the players were pumped to wake up early on a Monday morning to watch a grown man cry while telling them he was leaving the sinking ship behind.

Brian Gregory, you are gone and will soon be forgotten. You have left the University of Dayton basketball program in worse shape than you found it. I wish the Georgia Tech fans luck, they will need it.

More to come...

Do you have the rest of the article? That quote is very interesting. This coaching carousel would really kick into high gear if Painter makes the jump.

So far my favorite coaching rumor is Billy Donovan is an actual candidate for the NCSU job. I will shit an actual brick if they pull him or anyone of his stature. Debbie Yow has sid money will not be an object, or something to that effect. GT let me down, maybe State will do something to bring the league up

I found that rumor to be hilarious. Donovan turned down Kentucky twice, and broke his Magic contract, but he is going to go to NC State. yeah, ok

I had joked on the Illini boards earlier today that the reason the Purdue AD was going to let Painter go w/o a fight was because they were going to go hard after Stevens.

A Big 10 job in the state of Indiana. This will the most tempting offer Stevens will have gotten yet.

I have no idea why Donovan would leave UF for NCSU, especially with what he's accomplished there. NCSU has been a great basketball school and it could be again. If the price is right, they will get somebody, and they want a big name.

I don't that quote was from someone doing a print interview and he posted that on his twitter. He had just posted that because he wanted to add to all the smoke. I could get it tomorrow but by then it might not matter apparently.

Because it's a bullshit rumor.

Pretty much. And if NCSU really wants him, well, they can want anything, but it isn't going to happen. Unless Donovan has only stuck it out at Florida despite offers from Kentucky and taking a job with the Magic because he was waiting for a really stupid option to come along.

I don't see why Donovan wouldn't leave and go to NCSU. I mean who doesn't want to go work at a school that is 3rd and sometimes 4th on peoples minds in a small area with absolutely no national appeal or relevance.

NBA To Investigate Jay-Z and Kentucky Player’s Meeting

http://coast2coastrecruiting.net/2011/03/nba-to-investigate-jay-z-and-kentucky-player-meeting/

Danny Ainge was once fined 30,000 for sitting next to Kevin Durant’s mother during the big 12 tournament, so how much will Jay-Z and the Nets have to pay for the him hanging out with the Kentucky basketball team after they defeated North Carolina this past weekend. No clue but now the NBA is looking to investigate the meeting.

Well, the problem is that NBA team personnel aren’t allowed to make contact with college players before they declare for the draft, and the Kentucky roster includes a pair of potential lottery pick

News sources are reporting Painter accepted the Mizzou job. This is insane, huge loss for Purdue and a huge gain for Mizzou if this all pans out to be true.

NOPE, HE'S STAYING AT PURDUE. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=6274057

It's officially official from the official Purdue website

At the end of the day, my heart is at Purdue, and this is a place where I want to win a national championship.

Lost what little respect I had for Painter after this episode. He should spend more time figuring out how not to get embarrassed by VCU in the 2nd round rather than how to fleece his alma mater.

Sir Pant - You can do better than Painter, trust me.

I don't know. People always act like this but if someone came to you and asked you to switch places where you were working and would give you more money to do it you would have to be stupid to not listen to what they had to offer. Most of my Purdue friends

No, fuck the higher-ups. They should appreciate what they have with Painter. Just the fact that he considered leaving says more about the school than Painter; he grew up in Indiana, played at Purdue, and finally got to coach here. You'd think it would be easy to keep someone like that happy.

Glad it's over though and can't wait to see what the new facilities look like.

Nah, it's a business. Make what you can.

He's a good coach. I'd trade Weber for him straight up! Wouldn't you?

Nope not a chance. I think you'll come to share that sentiment over the next couple of years.

He can be a phenomenal passer but yeah, its the Micky D's game. Expect some playground bs. Texas fans should be happy.

I feel better about Irving leaving now that I've seen Cook. He has good speed, decent handle and made some nice passes. Some people said he was slower than Paulus, but these same people said the same thing about Kendall Marshall

So I'm at this game, and the halftime show is some girl that's singing Katy Perry and Taylor Swift covers. Sheesh.

McAdoo's a beast. Rivers has amazing handles. Plumlee is trying to be buddy buddy with everyone but noone's biting. Kabongo is only trying to break ankles.

King Rice trolled the hell out of Bobby Hurley his freshman year, he always played his best against Hurley. I also remember him being one of the few UNC players booed at the Dean Dome. He was a polarizing guy.
