The 2012-2013 Gaming Laptop Thread | Read OP before asking questions!

Status
Not open for further replies.
My girlfriend's brother needs a laptop for college, and his mom has tasked me with finding one.

He plays some amount of games like Civ 5, TF2, and other Steam-supported titles, so I feel like a discrete GPU is a must, but I also want to save them as much money as possible and not recommend some overkill system.

As per the parameters in the OP:

Country where it will be purchased:
US
Maximum budget $900
Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight): 15 or 17"
I assume the resolution will be somewhere in the 720-1080 range

My first question: Is Haswell worth it? I haven't kept up with the news regarding Haswell and laptop performance, but I remember some pretty lofty promises.

Assuming Haswell is worth it, here's what I've come up with (from HP):

Windows 8 64
4th generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4700MQ Processor
NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M Graphics with 2048MB of dedicated video memory
15.6-inch diagonal Full HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1920x1080)
8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
FREE Upgrade to 1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
NO mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache
No Additional Office Software
No additional security software
6-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
No Internal DVD or CD Drive
Standard Keyboard
HP TrueVision HD Webcam w/ integrated digital mic
802.11b/g/n WLAN

$700 flat with current coupon codes/tax or $825 for the 17" version.

Well then what is actually the max amount you will spend?
Around 900€. I also forgot to say that I'm in Spain.

I know that a desktop will be way better and also cheaper. I'm considering it, but I don't really have space where I live, so I will probably end buying a laptop.

Hey folks - Brit here looking for some advice - I know my way around desktop stuff, but Laptop things are fairly alien to me. There's a pretty nice deal on right now on the Dell Inspiron 15R Special Edition.

Some background on me/what I want -- I'm only in the market for a new laptop because my old one is really on its last legs. I have a hefty over-the-top gaming desktop PC, so I'm not really looking for a top-of-the-line model, but something that is relatively capable at a reasonable price. As such, being able to run games at a good FPS on high isn't imperative, but a nice bonus.

At most, gaming-wise, I'd probably use it for a bit of Civ or Starcraft and the like when travelling. I might use the machine to run Street Fighter IV, as well. Besides that, the machine would mostly be used for video streaming/web browsing around the house, as well as all that stuff while travelling. I write for a living, so I'd use it a lot for that, as well, which is pretty basic, of course.

Here's what's on offer from Dell:
  • 8192MB (2x 4096) 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM
  • 2GB AMD Radeon HD 7730M
  • 3rd gen Intel Core i5-3230M Processor (3M cache, up to 3.20 GHz)
  • 15.6in 1080p WLED w/ AntiGlare
  • 4x USB 3.0
  • HDMI/VGA Out
  • 1TB Serial ATA (5400RPM)
  • Windows 8 64bit License
  • Primary 6-cell 48W/HR LI-ION
  • 8x DVD+ / -RW Drive
  • Centrino Wireless-N 2230 Card (802.11n + BT 4.0)

I can get it from Dell for £500 delivered, all told, and I'd get a bit of cashback on top of that. I'm coming off the back of an Acer Aspire that has been pretty shit for two years of its three year life, but has always managed to limp on, which in fairness is to its credit. Reviews I'm reading of this model seem to largely say it's a good spec in an ugly case, but I don't really care about that. It'll be used indoors, at home or in hotel rooms... I have a tablet to carry day-to-day. Only other thing I don't really like is the lack of a numpad.

So my questions are - is this a good value? Is there a good/better alternative at a similar price - I can move about £100 in either direction? How are Dell laptops? Should I even consider the extended warranty stuff?

Cheers folks.

That's a good deal for you.

I'm currently looking at two HP Laptops, they have the exact same specs except one has a touch screen + GT 750m and the other has no touch screen plus a GT 740M. There is a $300 difference between these two models. Looking at specs sheets the only difference between those two cards is 120mhz core clock. Would overclocking the 740M bring it up to the same performance as a 750M?

Just bought an Asus G46VW for $490.

I have a desktop at home, but I wanted a decent laptop for on the go gaming such as mmos if I ever need it and I think for the price, I did good. I was gonna buy a retina MBP because I like apple laptops, but it would've cost me 4 times the price of this lol.

Specs are:
I5 3520m
8gb ram
GTX660m 2gb
1366x768 screen (blehhhh. Gonna order a 1600x900 replacement display for $125)
750gb HDD

I'm thinking of putting a msata ssd In but I'm not sure which one to get. Any recommendations? I think 128gb would be enough for me.

Also, I might upgrade it to a quad core eventually if I need it. I can get a used 3610qm for about $150-175 so that should be a pretty decent upgrade.

what is the situation with integrated graphics on mid-range Haswell? i.e the kind of laptop you'd buy for £500 or so. There are tons of different versions and I don't know which is competitive with lower end discrete solutions.

I just wanted to add my experience with the Lenovo Y500 w/dual 750's. I paid just over $1k for it and I've not been happier with my machine. No complaints, runs all the games I could want SUPER smooth (been playing BL2 lately), and for a very affordable price. I have no issues with heat (which was something I guess the older model had), and the touch pad isn't nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be.

I'd be curious to know if it's still considered a good deal with the newer stuff that has come out? I only ask because a lot of folks seem to want a machine in the $800-1000 range, and this machine is seriously delivering on that front.

Do you guys think Lenovo will be putting out any thinkpads in the year that will use the Intel Iris 5200 Pro? I'd really love a nice thinkpad that could also pull its weight for gaming.

Ordering my P370SM tomorrow. Only question is, do I order a matte screen or not? Any thoughts? Since it will just be a desktop replacement for indoors (I'm keeping my MBA for everything else) maybe a non-matte would provide nicer colors in games?

Hi guys

I want to hear some comments about Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 SLI. I'm living in Turkey and willing to buy it. But its hard to buy technology products in Turkey thanks to some taxes.

Its 2.300 Turkish Liras in Turkey and 1 dollar is 1.95 TL.

So, what do you think about Y500. Or do you prefer anything else between same range? (No Monster and Alienware because of they're not shipping to the Turkey, also retailers aren't selling those too)

I will buy it for gaming and mostly MMO's like Rift and Guild Wars 2.

Sorry guys/gals, I've been away for a few days. Let me get caught up....

I'm currently looking at two HP Laptops, they have the exact same specs except one has a touch screen + GT 750m and the other has no touch screen plus a GT 740M. There is a $300 difference between these two models. Looking at specs sheets the only difference between those two cards is 120mhz core clock. If the 740M has GDDR5, the cards will be identical at the same clocks.

Crucial M4.

You'll probably get an HD 4600 in that range.

Probably not. So far Idris Pro is only coming with high end CPUs which are soldered to the mobo. Check this out for more info.

Just wondering what's happened to the Asus G750 and why it's taking so long to come out in the UK.
Should be out within the next few weeks.

The matte upgrade is supposed to be gorgeous. Impressions thread. That's what i intend to take. But I must tell you that I have the 90% gamut glossy in my current Clevo, and it's the best screen available. For me it's just that, even though it only sees use around my house, I still run into situations with annoying glare.

ehm, any helps please? :(
There are Y500 on this very page. Look up.

How good is the Asus N76vj?
Not at all, because the GT 635M is horrible price to performance in the $1,000 range. You should be looking at the Lenovo Y500 SLI or Sager NP8230 (Clevo P151SM1).

After recommendations in this thread back at the end of 2012 I ended up buying this laptop:

i3-3110M
6GB DDR3
GT 630M 1GB

Since then I've only really used it to play Dark Souls which runs smooth as butter but I've been trying a few other games the last few days and I don't have a clue what I'm doing when I try to get the best performance.

I'm confused further because I've been looking at a site called Notebookcheck.net that says my card is basically a remodelled GT 540M and as an example - when I look at the page for that it says I can run Arkham City reasonably at medium settings, but the GeForce Experience software tells me my optimum settings should be Very High with most stuff except DX11 and PhysX switched on. The game runs fine when I'm walking round and it looks amazing but as soon as I get into a fight with people I hit pretty bad framerate issues.

What sort of settings should I be aiming for on most PS360 games? Last time I really had a gaming PC the only thing to look for on the box was whether or not you needed an SX-33 or a DX-66 processor and maybe 4 or 8MB of RAM! Any advice would be appreciated :)

Edit: also - are there any specific drivers I should be using opposed to the official NVidia ones? Should I be thinking about overclocking? The laptop already runs pretty hot whenever I play something that uses the dedicated graphics

You should never trust auto-detect software.

With an i3 and 630M, stick to a mix of Medium and High settings, at 1368x768 or 720p if necessary.

how high are your temperatures getting? It may be time to clean dust of of the fans.

Seems like a pretty good laptop, but there aren't to many impressions out there yet.

Eurocom is the biggest Canadian Clevo reseller.

Lenovo 410p Owners:

I am considering picking up one with the $849 deal. I would use it for a good amount of Adobe Premiere work and some PC gaming (looking forward to Saints Row 4).

Basically I would like to know how your experience with the laptop has been? I am getting sick of my $2000 rMBP with it's 1GB 650m taking forever to encode video. Also it runs like a fucking oven.

Hey LaptopGAF! I've come for some advice, haha; my girlfriend's finally gotten the opportunity to get a new laptop (she's been using a OS X Tiger Macbook for the past few years and it's started really getting in the way of things with compatibility issues), and asked me for advice on what to get.

Country it'll be purchased in - United Kingdom
Maximum budget - £500
Size isn't an issue.

We want to play some games online together; maybe some Dark Souls, Borderlands, Final Fantasy XV, etc. She doesn't mind running at low settings, since she absolutely can't go above that budget.

Is there anything out there that'll work? I suggested this, and I'm expecting it to run minimum settings at 30 FPS , though I'm not completely sure.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Thanks for the tips. What sort of impact should FXAA be having and should I aim to use it? Arkham City has a benchmarking tool and on medium settings with FXAA set to medium I averaged 51fps but with high settings and FXAA set to off I averaged 58. Sorry if these are daft questions but I've been out the loop on PC gaming for about 12 years

Also, can you recommend a good malware free tool for reporting my laptop's temperature? Does Windows 8 have an in built tool for this already?

I'm looking for something that would be around 13 inches, with decent gaming capability. Budget isn't too much of a concern right now.

For what it's worth, both GW2 and Rift run excellent on the 750 SLI model of the Y500. I've never tried maxing graphics on either title, but I don't typically do that with ANY game, even if my machine allows it.

If you're looking to play the game and enjoy it for what it is, you'll be fine.

Are there any options besides Sager/Clevo for a laptop with the 4GB variant of the AMD Radeon 8970M in the near future?

Maybe you guys could help me out

I have an Asus X401A
Windows 7
Intel Pentium B970 @ 2.30GHz
64-bit Operating System
Intel HD Graphics
3.89 GB of Ram

Are these good specs?

Why can I run games like HL2 and Amnesia on medium with very few hiccups but Thief Deadly Shadows from 2004 runs like crap?

What should be my benchmark when I'm looking at game specs and what games could I probably run well?

Also I'm very new to PC gaming and I'm not tech savvy at all so any tips on how to get more/improved performance would be helpful. I don't have the $$ to get a better laptop so if there are any ways I could make this Asus better, that info would be appreciated

Got the MSI Dragon Edition 2.0 which the price didn't change much from what I was going for actually so it was great. Laptop runs very fast and there is no hiccups any on games I have tested which mostly ran on high or ultra.(Witcher 1 ,2, Metro 2033, Alan Wake and Giana's Sisters) The only thing I'm seeing the problem of the Mouse and Keyboard i(Mouse not working when using the keys) and I believe I heard there is a work around for that part so its probably no big deal then again I can just simply plug a mouse which its better for gaming anyway. I still have to test Autodesk Maya, Unity and UDK but I believe it wont be giving problems for most of the part

The computer size its actually pretty good and I it doesnt weight much so I can see myself traveling with this monster.A pretty sturdy build and doesnt get very hot like my previous laptop and by the press of a button I can make it cool down. Battery life seems to be pretty good at the moment. Managed to squeeze 2 hours out of it while doing heavy gaming on it and out of gaming I haven't checked that so far.

Crappy Cellphone quality pics of the laptop (Do not be scared I changed the charge position later after the pics so all its safe :p)

My general feeling with AA is that it's the last thing you turn on, if your framerate is smooth enough to allow it. I'd rather have High settings and nearly 60fps than Medium w/ AA.

For temps, use HWMonitor.

For gaming, the specs really couldn't get much worse. You have Intel's HD 2000, which is now a four generations old integrated graphics solution. More info here

Did you just have to turn down PalmCheck?

Are the MSI's heat problems with the new GE60 and GE40 real or over exaggerated? I'm asking because I keep seeing some what mixed reports on this. I absolutely fell in love with the GE60 but was thinking of going with the GE40 for it's battery life.

Seems like the worst issue the GE40 has is its terrible screen; contrast ratio of less than 300:1, horrible black levels, and atrocious viewing angles.

Hmm, I'm not well versed on what the best SSDs are.

Seems like the worst issue the GE40 has is its terrible screen; contrast ratio of less than 300:1, horrible black levels, and atrocious viewing angles.

Have either of you messed with the Lenovo y410p? I just ordered one to try out.

Anyone had any experiences getting a notebook from cyberpowerpc.com? Some of their fangbooks are priced similar to the clevo/sager models. I've read a lot of people end up waiting longer than promised for their products.

Might as well buy from a Sager reseller. Why not? Cyberpower probably gets their Clevo laptops through Sager anyway.

Accidentally asked this twice in the PC thread because I'm stupid;

Safe temps? This is my first laptop, so I have no idea what's normal just googling it hasn't helped much. Temps dipped a bit in the graphs there because it had a few seconds to cool down before I remembered to grab a screen cap, but it shows that the GPU peaked at 91 and the CPU was around the same. This was after about an hour and a half of playing Max Payne 3, and a few days ago the GPU peaked at 97 while playing BF3. For reference, the laptop is a Y500 I purchased a few weeks ago, and since day one it's been that hot (so not a dust issue obviously).
