Wait, they still didn't fix that? I thought that was just on the prerelease/review models?

I'm being told it may have been a Synptics issue. I'll continue looking into it.

I want a new laptop that's really cheap and conveniently portable. It doesn't have to be able to game that well, I just need something that will function as infinite paper.

I'm in the US.
The cheaper the better, but $300 is probably my limit.
I think 15 or 16 inches is a good portable size, but smaller is fine.
I only plan to write and read on it when I'm not home
Something with a long battery life would be nice.
Hmm I don't have much to recommend in the $300 word processor range. Seems like typing comfort would also be a priority, so I think actually going to a store like Best Buy and getting hands on with some machines is a good idea.

only Fernando's ripe melons are good enough for me
They're exclusively red.

The GE40 does look nice, and as a bonus its GTX 760M is way faster than the GT 750M.

fake edit: the 13" Clevo W230ST w/ GTX 765M is slated for mid-July

That's what I'm saying. I'm slowly getting pulled toward the MSI for $1163 from xotic. Maybe I'll wait for the Clevo and see what that brings. I have no issues with waiting another month or so. I was so close to the Lenovo but a few things scared me off.

If you don't really want something for gaming maybe a Chromebook would be good, they fit your price range well, and they have good battery life. The only downside is you can't use Microsoft Word.

Check out Samsung or Asus's Chromebooks, I think they are supposed to be pretty good.

I googled it a bit and found this thread which says "Turn the sensitivity to 0 in PalmCheck under mouse device settings and it shouldn't do it any more."

Yeah, I'm actually the Kevin who raised the question on the last page of the thread.

That's good news, because I'm heavily leaning toward the GT70--2OD to be my next notebook.

I don't use Word anyway, so that's not a downside. I'll look into one.

Thanks.

Max Budget: 600-700
Max Size: Don't care, preferably 15-17 inches or more
planned usage for games: don't know what i can play on a laptop of this price, GW2 on medium or high settings? my dad spilled water on my old Dell XPS, i loved that thing :(. couldn't really play much on it anymore though, lol

I have the g750 and love it so far. My only complaint is the current nvidia drivers cause a stutter in some games like bf3 and nvidia doesn't have drivers on their site yet for any of the new 700m cards (765,770,780). Just whatever you do DON'T get the best buy model of the g750. It has less ram and crappier lcd. Not sure they even have that model where you are.

By best buy do you mean the store chain Best Buy? I'll ask the shop I visited earlier this year as they had ASUS G55, and see how much they can provide the G750 for.
I don't think I'll find the BB version over here tho haha.

Pretty much exactly what I want! Although if I shell out for the 780M like this, I probably won't be able to upgrade anything else. The RAM maybe, and the hard drive.

Are the CPU upgrades worth the money? And should I care about all the optimization/extra cooling stuff?

The rule of thumb when buying a gaming laptop: Use the entire budget on the GPU, and upgrade everything else later yourself. HDDs and RAM are easy to diy for cheap later, but the 780M costs $900 aftermarket. See what I'm saying?

And no, the faster CPUs don't justify their cost. Intel's XTU utility can be used to overclock the 4700MQ to 3.4Ghz on 4 cores, and that should be sufficient for the GTX 780M.

Can you stretch to $799?

Just got an email from XoticPC telling me the ram option its not compatible with the laptop. Now I need to change that on my order so they change it but the thing is I dont know what to change it to.

I chose 32GB DDR3 1600MHz [SKU-844PX] (Kingston HyperX CL9 Dual Channel Memory (4x8GB SODIMMS). I'm a noob obviously so I need the help on what to pick. No idea if the other 32GB will work or if I'll have to go lower.

K.Jack think you can give me a hand over here?

Its this computer.

EDIT: Should I PM you what I exactly ordered and see if there is something else I should change?

Whoa! That's some expensive RAM.

So they said the HyperX is incompatible? Any reason?

They didnt gave me a reason. They simply said the order couldnt be processed because that is not compatible with the computer.

They dont tell me what to look for so I'm aiming at the other 32GB option
32GB DDR3 1600MHz [SKU-844P] (Dual Channel Memory (4x8GB SODIMMS)).

or

24GB DDR3 1600MHz [SKU-834P] (Dual Channel Memory (3x8GB SODIMMS))

I'm confused and I got no idea what to do there since I didnt really expected compatibility issues. I feel they could have explained better the situation so I didnt had to go over here.

I don't like spending hundreds on RAM. Go as cheap as possible. I'd take the base 8GB and upgrade later for less.8GB sticks are on Newegg for $50 a piece.

Do you actually use tools which need a large amount? If yes, then I still think the 24GB is as high as you should go.

I use Autodesk Maya so i guess 24GB would be alright I suppose. (I dont feel like doing the modifications myself since I'm a noob)

Well what I said is my general advice to those solely using machines for gaming. If you really do need 32GB, go ahead and pay for it.

I should be fine with 24GB of ram. I used to do rendering on this laptop which its 2GB of ram (Despite taking ages to do renders). It will be a amazing difference still and its not like its gonna chug like the current laptop I have. Thanks a lot for the help cause otherwise I probably wouldn't know what exactly to do in this situation.

No problem.

Be sure to post some impressions when you get the laptop.

So it's the last day of the Leveno Y series sales. Does anyone have one of these? Are they worth the 800~900 dollars for the hardware despite the glossy non-IPS screen? Is the build quality of the Laptop low? Does it feel like a $1300 laptop or a $800 one? Am I better off waiting to see what other Haswell Laptops are coming out?

I'm looking for a Laptop that can play current and future titles at non-low settings at a smooth framerate, $800~900 seems like the perfect price but if $100 or $200 more dollars means a significant boost graphics hardware or build quality lemme know the alternatives.

No, but they say you can easily haggle rebates from the phone representatives.

Interesting.. Going to give them a call right now and demand a discount!

This is what i'm looking to get.
OPERATING SYSTEM Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit, English
MEMORY 8GB Dual Channel DDR3L at 1600MHz
HARD DRIVE 750GB SATA 3Gb/s (7,200 RPM)
VIDEO CARD NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 770M with 3GB GDDR5
LCD PANEL 17.3" WLED FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-Glare Display

Sigh... Xoticpc.com being a pain in the ass with the phone number verification (Apparently my phone isnt working to them) and issues with the credit card not having a billing address or something. I sent them more info in order to fix stuff but if nothing happens I guess suppose I'll be canceling my order with them. I was pretty excited but little by little its starting to diminish with this situation.

Let us know how that works out. I haven't yet ruled out Alienware.

I'd be willing to spend that much. Is it viable to have a dual monitor setup with this laptop? Or is it not strong enough for that?

Do you mean running games at 2000x1000 type resolutions? The answer to that is no.

If you can't sort out your problems with them, and need other options, may I recommend to you Gentech PC? They're well known and reliable.

Thanks for all your help. Probably gonna pull the trigger on this once I've sorted out my US bank account.

In what country are you?

Looking to buy a laptop for gaming and school work, but mainly for gaming. Was looking at getting this ASUS Republic of Gamers G75VW-AH71 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop. Is this a good value or not? Or can I get something else with same/similar specs for cheaper? Any recommendations for a different laptop? My max for spending is around $1500. Thanks for any advice.

Personally, I wasnt impressed with RPOG laptops. I am waiting for my 780m barebones to come in from Xoticpc, 17 inch, and I will take pictures and impressions when I get that. I tried the ASUS g46, and the ASUS G75vw with the 670mx.

Overall, the build quality seemed really good and the aesthetics werent bad for such a huge laptop (17"). I wanted a nicer screen thats why I didnt take the G46. I had the same problem with both laptops though.

Neither keyboard registers keystrokes very well. I thought maybe it was a faulty keyboard on the G46 since I had it first, but the G75 did the same thing, keys sometimes would register fine, and sometimes they would have to be pushed a specific way or rather hard to even register that they were being pressed. I am assuming cheap switches underneath the board or what not? I'm not totally sure, just know it was a huge turn off for me on the machines. I have to have a nice key board.

Not sure if this is a right thread, but what are good games for an old laptop?

My laptop has an i3 processor, 4GB RAM, and some crappy Raedon GPU.

It can run games like Battle of the Middle Earth 2 fine but nothing too crazy I suspect. Any good games which aren't resource intensive?

The first Batman should work, FIFA too, the old GTA games, DOTA, FTL and many other indies, WoW, Source based games like Portal, Half Life 2 etc

Can you look in Device Manager to see exactly what GPU it is?

Is there a better bang for my buck nowadays than the Dell Inspiron 15R? I don't care for something too gaming intensive. I would just like to keep playing Age of Empires and some of the more popular independent releases. The Inspiron is $800 right now, but I want to pull the trigger knowing that there isn't anything better out there for that kinda money. Yes, the chain store. The g55 is nice. It was my old laptop before the 750

Picking up the MSI GE40 tomorrow. I've heard it has some issues with heat/cooling but aside from that I've heard really good things. I don't plan to use it for very demanding games. Will report back with impressions after a few days use.

Back again.

Can anyone recommend me a laptop that:

- is durable. This is the most important part
-15" (15.6 is fine)
-will probably be able to run current games decently and Dark Souls II on Medium when it comes out (I know the specs aren't out yet, but I think guesstimations can be made)
-is durable

For under $1,000 with student and other rebates? Right now, I'm eyeing either a Viao S series or a Thinkpad t530, but is there anything else I should be looking at as well?

What do you think of this one?

Intel® Core™ i7 (i7-3537U) (2.0GHz (3.1GHz Turbo), 4MB (IS) Cache)
RAM 6GB (2GB*1 + 4GB*1) DDR3 1600MHz
HDD 750GB SATA 5400rpm + 24GB SSD Cache
Display 15.6" 16:9 HD (1366x768) LED Backlight
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 740M (DDR3 2GB, Dedicada, 2048x1536)

I want to be able to play games like Witcher 2 (and hopefully Witcher 3 when it is out :p) or Dark Souls. I don't really care if it is only in mid or even low settings.

The price is 779€. Is it a good value? My budget is around that price, but I can afford a somewhat higer price if needed.

You might want to look for one with a bit more ram, and the 740 probably isn't great for a graphics intensive game like The Witcher 2. It might have framerate problems on low if it even runs at all.

I'm thinking of selling my current laptop, does anyone know of a good way to find out how much it's actually worth? There don't seem to be any of its particular model on ebay, and while there are lots of "get a quote for your old laptop" type sites even the best of them only wants to give me around £200 and I think it's worth more than that.

Here are its specs:

Acer Aspire 8942G (bought in 2010, original price £1399)
Intel Core i7-720QM quad-core 1.6GHz
8GB RAM
750GB HDD (also has an empty second HDD bay)
AMD Mobility Radeon 5850 1GB (with HyperMemory up to 3GB)
Blu-Ray combo drive
18.4" Full HD LED backlit screen
720p built in webcam
Fingerprint reader
Bluetooth/802.11b/g/n wireless
