Off the record: The Cubs have had gripes this season about the umpires, the media, the Houston Astros, and the pitch calling. But they're not whining.
"Let's put it in the grave -- we ain't no whiners," Baker said Friday. "The thing I hate the worst is whining. That's one of my rules. I don't allow whiners in my house. Ask my wife and my son. I don't like whiners. You don't get nothing from whiners.
"All I know is I've never seen this much coverage on non-baseball stuff since I've been in baseball," he said. "Not even close. I could almost wrap 10 years of stuff into this one year."
Why weren't these hot topics last year?
"Last year, it was exhilarating and thrilling, the fact that we were winning in the first place. Correct?" Baker said. "This year is, 'How come we're not in first place?' Last year was the thrill that we were winning. The story line has changed. I'm so tired of talking about it.
"I've just got one job to do, manage and win," he said. "I don't have no more time -- this ain't Peyton Place, this is Chicago. I don't have time for that stuff no more. It's a waste of my time and energy. Then I get frustrated, upset, and I do not need that."
OK, end of story.
