So my mom got called by a half sister on Friday. The woman was apparently her father's last child (that they know of). Grandpa died when she was 15 and her mother was considerably younger than him. She's the daughter of his 4th wife. So basically grandpa was a rolling stone. Also what's weird is that eventually he and my mom's mom did marry about 7 years after she was put up for adoption. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I guess by that time they figured they didn't want to intrude on my mom's life with her adoptive folks. This woman is actually in contact with her other siblings on the father's side which is great. Years ago she found a list detailing all of his kin while working on family trees and one date in particular (1946) she just couldn't place. Funny how she's the only one social services could find and she has all the pieces but one (my mom). Life is weird.

This is more and more looking like the story of my whole family going back probably three generations. I think I made a post about it a bit a few pages back from my phone while surveying the surroundings while I was visiting my family back in Arkansas.

Nobody tells me a damn thing, but from what I can see, basically NONE of my aunts and uncles are full siblings. It's so common down there that nobody really uses "half-sister" or "half-brother" because that's the default. We literally don't know how many kids one of my older first cousins has fathered. Luckily for my dad one stepfather (my grandmother's last husband, who is the only grandfather I know) raised all six kids in that family.

Maybe this is the default in more black communities than I know, and my upbringing in suburbs has just prevented me from seeing that whole system. It's a whole family history I'm not sure I'll ever know.

I think it's a rural/economic thing. I know of lots of extended white families too. In this case papa was a rolling Scottish stone.

Also tedious hw report shit makes me want to do a bunch of shots. No wonder college is so drunkmode.

I hate OT and I hate people in general. Just though I'd say that.

And people say gaming side is worse. At least with gaming side, the craziness is about games. It's kind of like sports outside of your team loyalty, there's still a chance that you're a normal, well adjusted person, but with OT, these are people's fucked up opinions about real life issues. There's no hope for them.

Sot on with this. Has been an eye opener for me.

why you listening to country music?
I digg white people music sometimes.

He needs topics to speak to southern white women about.

The gun thread, I've never seen so much concentration of stupidity in one place outside of race threads. I just can't, I don't have the patience.

Don't fuck with gun control topics.

I was pretty pissed off and annoyed by this point (internally) so I snidely said "When do I start working and what's my salary?" He told me "Now's not the time to be discussing that" and proceeded to get up and ask that I follow him so he could escort me out. I thought I had pissed him off, but once we came to the secretaries desk, he asked her to set me up with a 3rd interview.
Dude... you passed. Seriously. They're going to give you an offer at that interview. I know you think they dicked you around and wasted your time (they did), but the fact that you kept your wits about you is a good thing to those types of people. They expected you to either cry or say "fuck you, Lo Pan". You're in like Flynn.

My fellow posters. Can you PLEASE check out that elephant poster thread. I mean holy shit. These defense forces man. People back in the day used very similar arguments to explain why they believed slavery was okay and even right. I mean wow.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
I'd much rather people stop comparing every single thing to slavery, thank you very much.

I hate when people do this all the time, ughhhhh

Yep, OT is strange as it represents the general public despite being lol the Internets. Large majority being clueless due to non exposure either by choice or staying in a bubble. Arguments on real matters are hard fought with baseless or weak understanding plus with anonymity the cycle continues.

It's sad now I think for a good minute to not post in a thought provoking/conversation piece due to the facepalming I'll do. I'll just lurk occasionally.

We actually had this same convo (although about a different thread) in the NFL thread. One of the posts nailed it, I think - said that a lot of the posters in OT probably don't have a lot of life experience, so their views are a bit naive and/or ignorant.

I don't want to be stereotyping people, but I think it's worth remembering that most of us originally came to this site because we were relatively hardcore gamers...

I don't think you're stereotyping at all. Why do you think Natural's Law is invoked so often?

it's all they know

I use the term NOLE. No Life Experience, some of them really can't fathom something existing beyond Reddit.

It's not even the stupid views themselves that piss me off. It's the complete unwillingness to accept that maybe, just maybe, there is more you can learn about a particular subject. Or that viewpoints beyond your own are still perfectly valid.

So many folk are just completely unwilling to engage opposition in a humble and respectful manner, instead opting to do their best to shut down any conversation by proving how much "smarter" than are than everyone else.

This is why I love sharing personal life experience stuff with people at work, well not too personal. You get a better sense of the world around you outside of your well built bubble.

I don't know dudes I love learning from anything & everybody I can. I guess that's why I go by my handle name for ages.

Sometimes the results are terrible but I get what you mean lol. Everyone has this idea that they're the average in every respect, its just how our brains tend to work, getting some perspective is nice. I've had conversations with older women at work that made it glaring that I'm usually too cold and mechanical, not compassionate enough. Worst case scenario, even a fool's perspective can be interesting.

Be it entertaining or otherwise, I agree.

I learn plenty of stuff from OT like just how entrenched in stupid some people are but you can't call out fucked up shit with real talk without also putting your head on the block. It's best to just hold back so you don't lose out on community lulz.

My heart goes out to a lot of people who own houses and got duped by shady brokers, realtors, banks, etc,. Others however are just dumb and assume because they are American they get to live by a different set of rules. Just got finished trying to educate a guy on the prospect of selling his home. The guy has -300.00 a month debt to income ratio. Drives a infinity G37, has no 401k or other assets and is 4 months behind of his mortgage for overindulging in other ares of life. Yet he believes the banks should give him some type of hardship assistance because they destroyed the market. Sir the banks didn't force you to leave above your means.

How many people are blaming the banks on their financial struggle because they have no self control?

I don't usually speak to consumers but when I do it blows my mind. The entire time the guy was talking I'm thinking about that old commercial where the guy is like I have golf club membership, drive x kind of car, and I'm in debt up to my eyeballs.

Finally got around to watching Django last night, and loved it. I'm DLing your podcast now, and I'll try to post my thoughts on it sometime later this week.

You guys are still doing the podcast, right?

GotEmRunnin - people like that are out there and give the average struggling person a bad name.

Being in real estate at the time and in banking I saw both sides of the coin, not to mention my parents' homeloan was riddled with carelessness and fraud.

Real estate agents, and through contract, brokers had fiduciary duties owed to their clients. Some of the fraud I saw and heard of in my real estate classes would make your blood boil. But like the guy you're talking about there were tons of idiots out there who were given everything you can expect from an ethical agent and lender and they went out and got he-locs to buy lambos and shit.

I am no financial expert but I believe a lot of that shit could be eliminated if there wasn't so many hands involved in buying a house. That and some people realized they don't have to buy one.

Yep. Talked to my mom last night about this same situation. Right now she has to bust her ass with OT and that is just to live paycheck to paycheck. Told her that if she foreclosed she could live more comfortably and have more freedom living in a two bedroom apartment. It is either that or work two jobs. She had an amazing caretaker job but the lady died and my mom just cant keep up.

Edit: just hope she can pass a credit check for an apartment if she forecloses.

Lack of regulation in real estate is crazy. An average transaction has buyer, seller, at least one agent, a broker (who could also be the agent), a lender and in some places an escrow agent.

Seems alright for such an expensive transaction, but lenders were getting bonuses for volume so they'd say you made more money than you actually did. Agents and brokers income depending on selling and their paychecks are bigger the more expensive a house, so they'd upsale you, or if you're an agent you can get someone to buy a house that your broker is selling at the time you could get an additional referral fee. And kickbacks everywhere in every direction. So with everyone looking to get as much out of a transaction as possible you could end up with a house above your price range so an agent and broker get a few extra bucks, there very well could have been a cheaper better suited home somewhere. Your loan was written by the type of company who would pay brokers for their business, so you can assume some shady things occurred especially if you knew you couldn't afford it in the first place. And then on top of that most loans were adjustable, my parents mortgage went from 900 a month in 2001 to 1,800 in 2007. Most of the increase occurring in a 18 month period.

Has she looked into refinancing?

Real estate is dramatically different state to state, city to city. The general rule in LA and most of California is, if you can, buy. Despite the trouble my parents went through to refinance to keep their house in just 10 years their mortgage payment is much lower than the rent would be on an equivalent sized house.

Yes. Her mortgage went up. And she wouldnt rent an house but an apartment.

Ah, gotcha. Feel free to say you're not comfortable answering, but did she used to have a genuine use for a house ( i.e. kids)?

My aunt a few years ago went from having a small 3 bedroom nearly paid off to a huge 6 bedroom and is basically living check to check. She could have been living mortgage free right now in a house that was perfectly fine. I suspect in a few years she'll sell it when she realizes it makes no sense to have all that room.

Cali and NY are real estate freaks. Arizona is an interesting market. They have whole streets of empty houses ready to go. But the bottom fell out.

Man are right on the Maddoff statement. That rings true for so many consumers. Personal loans, Home loans, Auto, etc,. People skip not only the fine print they just look to see where to sign. In the case of a home loan I think the closing is setup for you to NOT want to read all the paperwork. When the wife and I closed on our home. We had the closing scheduled at 3pm that day and didn't get the keys in hand until 8:30 because I was reading all the paper work.

Arizona, Florida. So many houses built and not enough consumers. Subprime loans and fraudulent activities Moris highlighted above really hurt those two states.

CA real estate is crazy, things are already back to closing in a week or less and selling above market price. During the boom your home value projection would be twice the purchase price in 5 or so years. You can still buy a home right now and have it be a profitable investment in 5 or so years.

Just buying into the dream

Maddoff's biggest mistake was thinking he could steal from the rich. " LOL bro we still got lawyer and judge friends. LOL you thought that was ALL of our money. You gon learn"

LA has tons of criminals still in disbelief of what they got away with.

To be fair a lot of the fine print is written in lawyer speak. Just browsing through health insurance shit I feel like I need a lawyer buddy to explain some of this bullshit.
